That makes no sense in this case. If the USA had attacked from the start they clearly would have gotten completely overrun, because they can't keep possession of the ball at all.

Playing all or nothing made sense at the end when they had nothing to lose anyway.

Playing more defensively is common sense if you know you are the lesser team. I'll agree that in some of the other matches some teams should have pressed the advantage instead of trying to defend a lead.
