Great introduction season. My main gripe is mystery negro is still mystery negro. No character development for him at all.

If they had actually said we're going to make him that magical character or given some sort of support to him being mysterious that would've been fine by me.

My issue is, he's largely a non-character at this point.

Agree. The writers handled him so poor this first season. Could at least gave him 15-30 mins of backstory or through some hints in. Isn't he suppose to be a core character to the story?

Also, really? The whole kill the head and they all immediately drop dead trope? Like drones in *insert every modern metallic robot alien movie*??

Also, why didn't Mina drop
To be fair pretty sure that trope started with vampires before robots were ever a thought in the human mind.

Mina was turned by Dracula, not the beast in the theater

Sure, kill the head vamp and reverse the curse is par for the course. The thing about them instantly dropping to the ground 'deactivated' upon the final stab of the coven master was bizarre.

Guess I'm just a little salty that they picked a really awkward dramatic moment to reveal Chandler's wolf side.

Good finale. It wrapped up the major overarching story, managed to answer key questions, but also kept enough stuff on the table for next season. I definitely can't wait to see where they go next with all these characters, even Dorian Gray.

I'm really glad Chandler ended up being a true honest to goodness Wolfman. The little bit we saw of him looked amazing. I wonder if they'll go full Larry Talbot with him, and make him undying as well. While every other character had really flashy moments built around spectacular monologues, they've managed to quietly build Chandler into a very interesting character. Hartnett has done a great job. If he were on another show, he would be a stand out performer.

Caliban and Frankenstein are in a very unexpected place. Despite his posturing and bluster, Caliban is a very sad and broken creature. I've enjoyed their story, and I'm sure things will get only more interesting now that Caliban has his Bride. I just hope Victor gives her a new brain, maybe that will get rid of her accent.

Vanessa and Malcolm finally have closure, and have embraced each other in a father and daughter relationship. It was a good moment between them that was a long time coming. Malcolm killing Mina to save Vanessa was pretty obvious, but only because everything had been carefully built to that moment. If Logan went any direction, it would have been a twist for the sake of a twist and would have cheated two great characters.

I still hope they managed to cast Jonathan Rhys Myers as Dracula. Maybe they could even get Nonso Anozie as well. Whoever they cast for next season will have a daunting task ahead of him. After this season, Dracula will need to be epic to pay-off everything these characters are going through.

I was satisfied with the finale. Dalton and Green continue to own the screen, but Hartnett has come along nicely. So glad it looks like we're getting a classic wolfman, I was just hoping he'd shift and tear through some thralls. Also glad that Borian Gray wasn't around much this ep.

So can Chandler control his transformations? It seems like he's completely out of it when he "wakes up" from one yet right before he knew what was going on and almost seemed willing.

I'd think he would want to lock himself up every full moon or at the least not be in a place full of people that could see him transform.

WTF at Malcom saying
"I already have a daughter" as he shoots Mina. That was one of the cruelest things to say, especially weird as he's been trying to save her so desperately the whole season.

I actually think my favourite actor in this show is Harry Treadaway. Never seen him in anything before, but he blew me away. Eva Green can be juuust a little too hammy at times.

I kind of wonder if
Vanessa is Malcolm's biological daughter. Considering how much he was messing around with her mother, it certainly could've been going on before she was born. Something like that might undermine the current character development, but if it's true, there's a chance Malcolm doesn't even know she's his kid.

You need to watch attack the block. Not only is it the best monster movie in so many years but also he's pretty funny in it

I prefer the classic wolfman makeup so I'm glad they're not going full on quadruped.

Fantastic first season! What made it even better was that they used the classic "wolf-man" design on Chandlers werewolf!

I was happy to see that as well. There's something refreshing about the classic wolfman design in an age where generic Twilight/Underworld werewolves are the norm.

What I want to see in season 2:
- Introduction of Prince Vlad of Walachia
- Traveling to Egypt and encountering The Mummy
- Jekyll.

I do think they'll introduce Dracula next year, but I think the show has enough characters as is. I'd rather they flesh out Dorian and Sembene instead of introducing more characters.

Oh Dracula will appear after all he needs his bride. I think the story will shift from hunting vampires to trying to protect themselves from them in season 2.

Maybe he took down his maps but the Egypt connection is too strong...they gotta hit Cairo at least. and well a ship to the Mediterranean is the primary route to Instanbul..then the onward thru the Carpathian Mountains..seems like the show could verywell be on the road next year.

finally watched ep 8, sogood.jpg
do we know if this will be an anthology series? i really hope we can explore these characters again

That's a theory floating around my house. That said, I liked Malcolm's line. Showed character growth, acceptance and ownership.

Also Dalton out acts them all. Green gets lots of screen time and is goddamn amazingly adaptable, but Dalton is just...yowsers.

Posted this earlier now that the show is over. I thought you guys might want to look at it. There appears to be no other new characters that were brought on, although they did go in a way towards the end that was more a nod to the Universal Monster movies as oppose to the actual literature itself.

But here is the list again:

Here are the original books that these character are based upon for anybody interested:

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
Dracula by Bram Stoker
The Portrait of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde
King Solomon's Mines by H. Rider Haggard (I'm including this because, it is apparent to me, at least, that Dalton's Character is based off Sir Allen Quartermain, but they couldn't use him because of obvious parallels to League of Extraordinary Gentlemen)

I'll include more as(if) other literary characters are added into the stories.

Interesting fact: The Grand Guignol (The Theater where that girl rejected Caliban's Orange) was in reality located in Paris.

When I get home I'll compile a list of monsters/characters from other books/movies that are set in that time period, I think it'd be cool to see in Season 2.

As long as Dr.Jerkyll is included I am happy.

Predictable finale, although not surprising in more ways than one when you consider how heavy handed is this show when it comes to subtext. I really enjoyed the way they handled Caliban, and Victor continues to grow on me. It was also nice to see Sambene kicking some ass.

I was also AMAZED by the little detail of Malcolm purchasing a Mauser pistol prototype, which was a completely revolutionary and very sought after weapon in the late XIX century due to its unrivaled power and reloading speed. The first ones had to be smuggled from Germany and were very popular among British officials in Africa. Does anybody know the year in which the show takes place? Production guns didn't exist until 189x or so.

That said, Mina felt completely wasted, specially after all the "sisterly" drama with Vanessa. I hope we get to see more of her in the second season, even if that means some flashback-based episode. I was also very unimpressed by the poor quality of the fight scenes and I believe Ethan's reveal could have been handled a bit better (why have him transform into a werewolf at the inn instead of at the Grand Guignol, when he was getting trashed by an army of undead creatures?)

Anyway, I still enjoyed the finale, even if it felt like the weakest episode of the season. Looking forward to more madness (and hopefuly more Ethan; Hartnett is fine, he just needs something to work with) in S2.

Also, io9 updated their little chart

Vanessa, Malcolm and Victor have to be the most sordid fuckers on TV. Good grief, those three.

Shitty fight scenes are par for the course these days, so I don't hold it against the show.

I don't think he can control his transformation.

I thought it was kind of anti-climatic, but they delivered on the promise of the werewolf. And thankfully it was confirmed that that Vampire guy is not Dracula.

The show isn't perfect and is considerably slow but I'll have to admit that I'm still rather enjoying it. Love the characters and time period/location. It's going to be a long wait for season two.

.

It's also a very Sir Malcolm thing to do, get an expensive new weapon so he can be better then Chandler and his lifetime of experience with sixshooters.

i missed the confirmation, was it when Minna talks about "master"?

Watched the Finale last evening...after the high of the previous episode,I was a little let down but overall,it was a good one, more in line whith the mood and slowness in general of the entire season, besides that extraordinary exorcism episode...looking forward to next season.

Good finale

The guy who plays Caliban is so freaking good. Loved that scene with him and Frankenstein before Chandler asked Frankenstein over.

Nice scene in the theatre with the vampries.

Awesome to finally see Chandler transform.

My problem with the finale fight scene is that it really wasn't any different from the ones earlier in the season I mean Vanessa has a vision> They go to the location> They get ambushed by thralls> a fight ensues.

Hell Malcolm and Vanessa even finished off the Head Vampire in a very similar way in the first episode.

Also would it have killed them to make this Vampire look a bit different from the first one or hell even put up a semblance of a fight.

Just finished Possession. Holy shit Green and Hartnett fucking killed it. Eva Green has been excellent throughout but Hartnett really stepped it up that episode. Great stuff.

Yeah I really thought he did a good job in that episode especially in the part where he plays the Devil.

So what you're saying is...is that season 2 will basically be Stardust Crusaders? :3

I just looked that up on IMBD, that's his brother, Luke Treadaway. Weirdly incidently, I watched a movie with Luke in it last night and I was so confused for a while haha. First time I'd heard of him, too.
Didn't think he was as good as Harry, but maybe it was just that role.

So, they didn't tell us anything about why Chandler can do exorcisms and pray like that, did they?

Cause it came a bit out of nowhere.

He's very good, he just didn't get a meaty part until the very end of the season. All the actors are quite competent, really. I'm most surprised by Victor. He's such an interesting character.

So I binge watched this show over the last couple days. Holy shit, it came out of nowhere. I was in for Timothy Dalton and Eva Green, who were definitely the highlights. But damn, it was pretty amazing. Really looking forward to what they do in season two. Probably my favorite new show of the last year.

I believe Ethan's reveal could have been handled a bit better (why have him transform into a werewolf at the inn instead of at the Grand Guignol, when he was getting trashed by an army of undead creatures?)

This part didn't really make sense for me either, also still in the dark about the whole exorcism thing.

Also out of every possible woman that could be used for the "bride of frankenstein" , he uses Brona Croft...literally the love of his colleague which will very obviously be discovered

Outside of that, loved the show

My assumption as to why Ethan didn't transform in the final episode was because he can't control it once he does, and didn't want to put the others in danger once he were to clean house against the vampires. He flashes back to the murders from the first episode later in the series, in fairly graphic detail, which you assume he wouldn't have unless he committed them, which underscores the out of control aspect of his transformations.

As for Victor using Brona as the bride, I can only guess that he probably assumes that once resurrected, that both creations will leave London and won't be a problem for him afterward.

Great finale, and I really liked the series overall. So they're making another season? Kind of torn since it felt like a good ending leaving some parts to the imagination. But there's potential for another good season so I'll definitely watch it.

A couple tidbits on S2 from today's Showtime panel at TCA:
David Nevins: Helen McCrory’s Madame Kali will be the antagonist for Season 2 of #PennyDreadful. #TCA14

Helen McCrory's character returns in S2 & has a much bigger role. Nevins: "We're only just getting started" w #PennyDreadful #TCA14
