A majority of Halo fans play the game offline.. and a good swath of the online ones play the online splitscreen with friends or family.

Of course. But let's be real here, you're talking about a ridiculously small minority who would even attempt 4 player split screen campaign. 2 player is at least doable.

Edit: Never mind. Seems there was never 4 player split screen to begin with for campaign.

we need functional waypoint before we get a snappable

I'm still incredibly salty that they just abandoned the Waypoint WP app after Reach, just for a poor mobile version.

Oh, snap.

But seriously, the fact that we don't have a Waypoint app for X1 yet makes me think they're taking their time on it. It'll probably drop just before the MCC.

Has anyone tried going on with the X1's Internet Explorer? That was the reasoning for not upgrading the Windows Phone app, because the site was supposedly redesigned for mobile.

For something like Halo 1's MP, all they need is something like FFA, 4v4 TS, 4v4 Flag/Oddball/King, Double Team, Big Team (especially if the PC maps are in), and maybe creating a Snipers variant.

Halo 2 can be similar, but instead of Oddball and King, make it 2-flag, 1-flag, Assault, 1-bomb, Neutral Bomb, 3 Plots, and Oddball (for Warlock and Midship!). No need to have a ton, really. Though I'm curious how ranks are working and how guests will be permitted.

Really itching to play 1-Bomb and 1-Flag right now. So fun.

They seem to be pushing for greater interactivity than that, like with the new achievement app's snappability. I think they'll do something more elaborate.

This may be the only console game(s) I'll pick up for most of this generation.

As a PC gamer I never found a reaosn to pick this series up, but since I've got an Xbone for home theater duties, I figure I might as well. PRobably not in November though, ealry next year fits better for me I think, should help me pass the time until Witcher 3.

As a newcomer to the series, is there any reaosn to skip any of the games, or are they all worth experiencing?

Get it before Christmas for the H5 beta, get that insight in to the future!

Halo is my favorite series of all time so Id say don't skip any and play in order so you get to experience it all. If possible I'd say try and find a way to play ODST and Reach before playing H4. Release order is the best order to experience the games for the first time IMHO

They're all worth playing for sure. You should pick it up for the Halo 5 beta if anything which starts on December 27th and goes until January 22nd I believe.

Witcher 3 comes out on Feb. So its not a long wait. This package has enough to kill time for a year. You should definitely get it by Dec. This way you can also try the Halo 5 beta.

As a Halo fan id like to just say, "play every Halo ever cause they are all worth it!"

But, really besides what comes with the Master Chief Collection I just recommend Halo Reach. It's a fantastic game.

ODST, Halo Wars, Spartan Assault are all worth playing for different reasons, but I feel like the only one you would be severely missing out on is Halo Reach.

All worth experiencing. Worth noting, Halo 2 can be pretty brutal in places, so you might want to notch down the difficulty. The stories are all great. Make sure to hunt for terminals!

playing 4 player campaign split screen would be awful. Not only would there be slowdown but it's way too small.

You're running a 360 game on the Xbox One, with no graphical upgrades.

I think the One could handle two more viewports during campaign.

I'm not understanding something.

I get the maps and all that will be included, but will everything like health, weapon damage, grenade blast radius, physics etc be the same across the board or will this change to depending on what map you're playing?

Will equipment like bubble shields be available in halo 3 maps only? Will loadouts only be in halo 4 maps?

Even if it's all as it was (I'm hoping so) I don't know if i'd be able to adjust from map to map, i'd probably stick with the halo 2 playlist for a while, then move on to halo 3... if others do this it'd dilute the population somewhat.

Has this stuff been answered already?

Yes.

Definitely yes.

Plus Microsoft will tell you this if you ask them.

a majority? please show your work.

4 players max for campaign. So no one is playing 4 player split screen online with anyone.

For a long while I was a Community Cartographer, which was a group of community members selected to push Forge maps into matchmaking. Forge maps had to be compatible with splitscreen, and playlists that had heavy 4-split populations had no Forge variants in them at all, and if they did it was the rare one that supported 4-split. This is why in some playlists in Reach and 4 that have Forge variants mixed, developer maps are the top option - so splitscreeners can assure they'll be playing a map with a good framerate.

I also fixed up a couple of 343 maps to improve framerate for splitscreen and prevent map escapes - those maps retain my gamertag as the Author if you check it in Halo 4, if you don't believe me.

Also, I don't have the hard numbers but Activision has stated that only half of CoD copies ever connect to the internet. Just because you play games a certain way doesn't mean everyone plays games like you do.

Ya this was part of the IGN interview I originally posted in the OP. Each game will load its own original engine and play exactly as it did, except with higher framerate and resolution. It was mentioned in a Gamespot interview I believe that some of the Forge issues in H4 were fixed for TMCC (haven't heard more about this since), but otherwise they're the games you remember. So you don't have a 3sk pistol in Halo 3 or a Spectre in Halo 4, etc.

The change might be a bit jarring, but universal controls and single gametypes in the cross-game playlists should help to mitigate that effect. And you don't have to play the game you don't want either.

@Fyre - On Waypoint bulletins it has been confirmed almost half of Halo gamers stick to campaign. I've seen as much from Stinkles here on GAF from time to time as well.

Also worth noting is Spartan Ops was a developed as a bridge to take campaign only players into the online multiplayer.

Wish for the day - I hope we see an 8 player or more coop mode in Halo 5, like what Sunset Overdrive announced. Insane and a solid use of the Azure network, especially with local friends.

I'll happily take a stable Spartan Ops experience. Baby steps.

You reckon this would still be the case though?

Maybe 2 player split screen... perhaps.... but 4-way split in 2014?
I can't see it being a huge puller of the crowds in this day and age.

I'm sorry, I lost track of this thread a bit, but do we have it confirmed yet if the achievements for Halo CE, Halo 3 & Halo 4 are staying the same as their original releases, or if they're new ones?

If they're the original achievements, why aren't the DLC achievements included?

They are new ones apparently. Although I'd assume some like completing the games on Normal-Legendary, finding all the terminals/skulls etc. will be the same.

I'm sure there will be a 2v2 playlist for CE. The bigger concern though is if there will be radar.

Question for anyone that played a lot of Halo PC: What was the general consensus online regarding radar? Did most servers have them? Whenever I played radar was never activated, so just wondering if that was the "standard" for Halo PC like it was for Xbox.

There was little to no competitive scene on Halo PC. Radar off 4v4 Slayer Pro servers just weren't happening. Vast majority of servers were 16 player large maps and everyone running around like idiots, often with mods.

.

While you are right in general, your graph and the progress just show something that is happening in pretty much every other videogame, too :) This does not change the fact at all, but it should still be mentioned.

From July 4-6, 343 Industries will be at Rooster Teeth Expo (RTX) in Austin, Texas to deliver all sorts of “Halo” goodness to fans, including an exclusive panel dedicated to “Halo: The Master Chief Collection.”

On Saturday, July 5 (12 – 1 p.m. CT), whether you’re attending RTX this year or watching the expo live on Twitch, join the development team at 343 Industries and Certain Affinity as they discuss their design philosophy and vision for “Halo: The Master Chief Collection,” share war stories about the development of the original “Halo 2,” and more.

Who knows? They might have a couple surprises to reveal as well.

“Halo: The Master Chief Collection” RTX Panel
Saturday, July 5, 12 – 1 p.m. CT
Main Hall, Austin Convention Center
Watch Live: http://rtxevent.com/rtxlive/

In addition to the panel, 343 Industries will have loads of “Halo” activities available for fans at their booth. Drop by to meet the team, pick up limited-edition swag, shop at the “Halo” store, line up for an exclusive demo of “Halo: The Master Chief Collection’s” campaign and much more. 343 Industries will also have a classic gaming set up – CRT televisions, original Xbox’s and “Duke” Xbox controllers – for you to test your skills in the original “Halo 2” against friends or one of 343 Industries’ pro-gamers.

Interesting. More maps confirmed? Any other ideas?

I can't see it being a huge puller of the crowds in this day and age.

It's one of the things the Halo playerbase does, because Halo games consistently support it.

Every developer map in every Halo is intended to run in 4-split.

And, it's one of the main ways Halo LANs are played. People don't always have 16 TVs, but it's great when you can just use 4 x 4 split to get a full BTB game.

Nice. Was it mainly object counts?

I imagine splitscreen puts a heavier load on the geometry side of the rendering pipe.

Yeah. It was their Forge map variants. Just reduce the objects or change some that have less detail but with the same functionality. Or replace decorative glass pieces with solid walls.

I also had a Foundation remake that I made in Reach that used something like only $1500 budget, and actually looked like Foundation, intended for Team Classic but Team Classic was killed off for the eventual Anniversary playlists.

I also did an Infection variant of Uncaged called Uncongealed for Reach matchmaking. Replaced a lot of the glass walls with solid ones to improve framerate (so they'd actually occlude the parts of the level behind them) and also to provide more movement cover for zombies to get the tension up.

As a tangent, once 4K TVs are mainstream, splitscreen will mean everyone gets a 1080p display 4-split..

Given that we're a whole console generation (at minimum) away from 4K gaming, I would anticipate that four player split screen will be all but completely abandoned by then.
