Can we get a Butt Mode on GAF that replaces swears and vulgar words? That would make everything fantastic.

I watched this review from Gametrailers:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qgnGpxR0Sg

And it sounds kinda different compared to my version or even the official soundtrack

Butt Mode has been leaked/cracked with the codes.

I kind of feel bad for the development team about all the cheat codes being cracked right away, especially if they were saving a few things for surprises a little later.

The way they designed the cheat codes, it could not be prevented.

So there are multiple versions of the same code?

I still fucking hate the guy but that is somewhat interesting.

My slightly educated guess is this:
the bits of name you enter are used in a mathematical function, probably a hash function,
that map every name to a 32 bit number.
Another poster above already quoted the math about the possible amount of combinations.

yeah multiple codes for the same effect.

you can see the Super Jump and Moon Jump listed on the cracked codes

The way I understand it, super jump and moon jump should be different things.
Every cheat form the cracked list should be a unique cheat.

This game looks great and I would have already bought it if there was some sort of crossbuy promotion between Wii U and 3DS. But as it is, I just can't decide for which platform I should get it. This is the perfect game for long train rides to have it on the go, but I would also love to play it on the big screen once in a while with the better control options or the option to play it on the gamepad.

Decisions, decision..

I've been pretty busy so I've been taking my sweet time with this game. Just wanted to pop in to say (as I'm sure has been said 143513535 times by now) that the soundtrack is FUCKING AMAZING!!!!!! That is all :)

Just beat it, I gotta say, I tend to dislike indie titles... this one was that rare exception, it was amazing! Really wish I could have posted to the 3DS Miiverse though :\

Edit: Nevermind, I've not posted to Miiverse on 3DS in so long I forgot how to do it, I was trying to do an AC screenshot ~_~

Do you remember how long it took for NES games to come to Europe :)
Indeed I do, I'm 36 and back then they didn't even get localized. I'm glad about it though, it forced me to learn english (I was already an RPG/Adventure fan at 11), so I never had to properly study it at school and got high marks easily while my italian classmates were struggling with it.

where can I see the latest list of codes?

Found them here:

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=280263875

Holy crap. That is insane. Are these Steam only or will they work on Nintendo versions?
Code 279: TVSVUEIO
As Above, but player model is giant, changes color when jumping. Bubble effect comes from mouth (like underwater) Can pogo off the ground (like Ducktales) 10k gold. Starts with every armor/upgrade/shovel/relic/chalice/hp/mana up, and on Tower of Fate: Entrance

I gotta try that one out...

For those who want to keep it "clean", we know of 4 codes: Iron Man, Super Jump, Moon Jump, and Butt Mode.
The codes for those are:
IM&SGC14 - Iron Man of Gaming Mode, from the ScrewAttack/YCG streams
J&2JMP! - Super Jump, from an unknown origin
J&!JSMP - Moon Jump, from the MM9 Backer Board
X&BUTT - the mythical Butt Mode, from YCG's twitter

As a rule of thumb, official codes somehow resemble their mode name and use some sort of punctuation.

Got to the tower.
I found the game to already be quite annoying on the ice (Always hated when platforms give your character lots of inertia) and propeller levels.
And the tower is even worse. It's not fun anymore, it's just frustrating and annoying.
I didn't even play it much, I'm sure I can beat the game with too many problems, but got really irked and bored quite fast and totally lost interest in playing.

I dropped this in the review topic but figured it should be here as well. My buddy and I were able to score some facetime with Yacht Club Games staff, Ian Flood and Erin Pellon and pick their brain regarding Shovel Knight and some other topics.

I've decided to use a program to map it properly until the devs patch this. I'm attaching it here b/c it's easy to use, free, I don't notice any lag and it could help someone else out. I've included the program and my profile which works with my usb nes retrobit adaptor (original nes controller plugged into a usb adaptor from retrobit).

http://www.filedropper.com/sknesmapperprogram_1

Once you install and open the program, select the nes controller under controllers found and then add it so you can select it under active controllers. Then import my profile which is included as the second file in the package (SK). Everything in game should work. Good luck and hopefully this helps until it's officially patched.

I'm all for keeping it clean, but will YCG even release all of the official codes with this leak out?

Quick question for anyone who has finished the game:
is it safe to help the bosses dangling from the edge after the all-bosses battle?

what do you mean clean? Were the others some how found inappropriately? Also - any description on what some do like the iron man one?

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
I've only beat the first level and castle level so far... great game but it doesn't seem too challenging (then again I'm a veteran of NES games). Lots of indie games try for that 8/16-bit nostalgia and gameplay but so many fall short... this one seems to be doing all the right things so far.

I just hope it gets a bit more challenging/off the wall soon.

Haha keep playing. The first two or three levels are very deceptive. I thought the same thing.

Ok, I'm making a new save to play as Butt Butt. This is the only way I'll be able to force myself to read the dialogues.

Clean refers to how the code was given out, most of the time via Yacht Club Games to another person or party for them to distribute as they see fit (they gave a code to the MN9 team to give to their forum, and it spread from there). A fun effect of this was a collector mentality, scouring the web for people who dared shared their own, private secret.
This is in contrast from pulling from the list of cracked codes. Due to how names are stored, there are multiple possible different codes that give the same cheat, thus resulting in a random string of numbers and letters resulting in the same effect as a simple code such as X&BUTT.

Just finished the first playthrough. Met my expectations and exceeded them. Totally my type of game, and just challenging enough that I could enjoy it (although I did face palm several times in difficult spots).

Oozes with charm and polish. Glad I was a backer and hope the studio continues to make great games.

So I wouldn't be hindering myself by going 3DS on this, right?
Right. It's great on 3DS.

3DS wont be getting the free DLC, 4 player battle mode that both PC and Wii U are getting. But has Streetpass features to make up for the lack of multilayer.

But other than that it's the same game, and plays great, and will still get all the other free DLC.

Just finished the Steam version yesterday and it was an absolute joy to play.

Great art, amazing music, a simple but compelling story, and riddled with references and little touches that really make it a fulfilling experience.

My only issue was that I feel the first playthrough could stand to be a bit tougher, however, new-game plus is supposed to be more challenging, so I'm certainly looking forward to trying that.

Well worth the price-tag and I would whole-heartedly encourage anyone who is even slightly interested in nes-style platformers to give it a go.

I should mention that it's courteous to email-hide or at least spoiler the codes that came from the crack list. Some people, such as myself, want to try and preserve the "playground" feeling.

I agree with this. I'll only be adding the clean list of codes to the OT, and in spoiler tags.

BTW, tried out Butt Mode and love the title change for the OT. I'd gladly be tagged as 8-bit Butt Butt....

Glad you like it, but man, bad fake CRT effect is bad.

Why did you choose to make the game look worse with a fakey CRT filter?

I don't think it makes it look worse, but bummer you guys don't like it!

I think these kinds of art styles totally can benefit from these effects.

For example, look at this comparison.

It's from an older version of the SweetFx thing I was doing, but it totally still applies. In the original, the green platform up top just has a weird color shift that when blown up like this doesn't really make any sense. But, with the CRT effect applied, you can see how it blends together and actually looks like a rounded edge, rather than just some weird color shift.

Similar stuff happens with Shovel Knights horns. You get the idea of what it's supposed to be, but it doesn't really look representative of it. With the CRT effect, theres a slight color shift to make it actually look like a little shine on the horn.

In the previously posted example that you guys were responding too, I think another great example are the yellow blocks you can shovel spike on to break.

shovel_brick__by_aloo81-d7p29c3.gif

It looks like a mish mash when it's regularly blown up, but using the CRT effect you get that great transitioning between the layers. Looking back at these I do actually need to lower the brigtness down a little because the colors are getting a bit shifted here, but I don't think it can be plainly said "It makes it worse."

Also just throwing this one in too, but I think it does wonders on the King Knight's throne! The arm rests little indented curves actually look like they make sense, and Shovel Knights horns are actually rounded out and smooth like they're supposed to be.

shovel_chair__by_aloo81-d7p2d08.gif

Basically, the CRT effect helps colors transition appropriately, and it helps round things which are made of squares actually look like round things, instead of mooshed together squares.

Whether you like it or not, I think there's some merit to the idea that it actually works with the art style in a similar way that older games used the CRT bleed to create nice looking blends. I dig it, you don't gotta, but I think there's some real genuine benefit to it.
