Point n Click Adventure GAF 2014 No longer in our dreams, memories or just Germany.

To examine a hotspot or item, you have to click on it, wait for the menu to appear, then click on the Examine button. There's no reason that they couldn't just allow you to examine by right-clicking.

[...]

Thanks.

In the original GK1 game you had various action icons on the top of the screen (walk, look, talk, use etc.) that you had to click on before clicking on hot spots. Did they left them separate or merged into a single "action" button? Because from what you said it seems they just transfered GK1 interface into menu, or am I understanding this wrong?

Although it would be better if they support shortcuts and right-clicks (especially that since examine is the most used action in point & click games). This shouldn't be hard to implement and UI would really benefit from it.

Can't double-click on a saved game to load it. You have to click on the save, then click Load.

Ok, this is an odd one. Double click should be is a standard now. Omitting it when doing game interface is just... weird.

Animations still aren't great.

Well, given how common it was for characters to sink their arms into their torsos in Moebious, or characters' faces to spazm-out, I hope the animation is better then in that game.

The voice acting is a cheap imitation so far and inconsistent. Especially the narrator.

Is the narrator an old granny again?
I really couldn't stand her in the original game and was thankful for the option to disable narrator's voice. :(

Yeah, it's terrible.

The only really good game in the serie is the first one. That was an absolute masterpiece.
The second it's not bad, but it's pretty mediocre.
The third is an abomination, and memory of it should be erased from Earth.
The fourth is pretty bad too.
The fifth is way better, it has some good things but it's still kinda mediocre (especially the ending twist).

This is the opinion I've generally heard of the series and why even though I really liked BS1 back in the day I never played 2 on wards until recently I gave it another shot with 5. I'm tempted to still play BS2 at some point since the 2d art is great, but yeah, most people have said it's mediocre.

Main problem is that it's so short. The mayan stuff works really well while it lasts. More fun them BS5 for me at least.

BS3 was my first BS game and... i enjoyed it! Come at me, PnC GAF!!
Well, despite its shortcomings I still think it's better than BS4. Both are pretty bad BS games though...

Is the Gabriel Knight demo being discussed above available online or is it only available to a favoured few or something?

I've recently played The Inner World and it has the same problem... interface clearly designed for tablets.
It's infuriating.

Well, you're like the people who played curse of monkey island as their first, and thought it really was a Monkey Island game :p

I enjoyed 2, 4 and 5 :). Sure they have bad ending, but that seems to be a signature for the series now. The very beginning of the 5th game is also weak, but the middle part has some of the best puzzles I've seen in the genre the last 10 years.

Not sure about the third one. I don't remember it being great, but not awful either.

Have Revolution announced what they're doing next? I enjoy the stories they write, and they can do great puzzles when they want to, and I would like to see them do something completely new with it, without the Broken Sword bagage.

So... "Harvester". I know this is a bad game but I ever since I read about it in a gaming magazine I've wanted to play it and I finally bought it few weeks ago in one of Humble Bundles. I thinking about starting it but first few question:
1) are there any dead end situations or possible deaths? Something that I should be aware beforehand?
2) I heard there are a few illogical puzzles there so should I bother playing it normally or is it better to just say fuck it and use a walkthrough?

I think i just encountered one of the most fucked up things in game history.

So, ive been playing Black Mirror. Enjoying it for the most part. Very slow but has nice atmosphere. Its also really long. Been playing for around 6-8 hours now.

So there is this part where you find a padlock, and you have a gun with two bullets. You shoot the padlock but he misses. You then examine the lock and realize you have to shoot better or something. So you shoot again and open the lock.

Here is the great part. You then walk through the door and a wolf eats you on the other side. You apparently have to shoot the wolf. Except, the game let me use my bullets....and i saved after i used my bullets.

Game over. 6-8 hours gone.

Thank the lord i was able to scour the internets for a save game file right before that point. What fucked up crap, almost want to stop playing.

Sounds like a sierra-on-line game :) . I'll always remember similar fucking nonsense about some idiot who hurt his foot and a shoe in Laura Bow 2. Gah. And it was all the way at the end, too.

On the topic of Gabriel Knight - i am kind of pleasantly surprised. It does not look _great_ but it's not beyond awful either. Is it the same voice acting? I remember turning it off when I played as a kid (couldn't stand the narrator's voice; now that I am better versed with US culture I can kind of see what they were going for).

It does have a bit of those 'click everywhere to collect random shit' aventure games look to it though (which i a) dislike, b) wonder how they all look kind of the same since the common point is gameplay, not graphic design).

And unlike Monkey Island 2. GK had a great intro which would have been costly to remake (the red bosch like paintings + kickass music). Well, they just kept it, low resolution and all. Much better than throwing it away imo (i'll never forgive MI2 special edition for tossing away the credit intro).

You can die in the game; play through the game without a walkthrough, and if you get stuck, do what you need to do. Harvester is a such a whacky game, I fucking love it.

I think Quest for Infamy comes out tomorrow according to Greenman Gaming?

If they followed through that failed Kickstarter stretch goal, then Beneath a Steel Sky 2.

Well, first thing I got after launching the game were quick tips about fighting, shooting and your picture being your health meter, so duh, useless question is useless. :P

I played the game for a while and I already hate the dialog system. It only gives you a list of terms that are related with currently discussed topic (e.g. when the mother mentions Stephanie you can choose "marriage" and "fiance", but all the other previously available topics, like "father", "cookies" etc. disappears) and an option to write down anything else. It's annoying because it's easy to miss things. :/

EDIT: I accidentally punched a paper boy and then he started shooting me and eventually killed me. This will be a long game. :(

LOL, it can be quite hilarious though. It's all trial and error. I suggest writing down those things you may not choose. I think you can re-ask them by typing them in if I'm not mistaken.
Any idea when Gabriel Knight is going to be released?

I believe August-September some time.

Trying to play Moebius, but the animations and the dialogues makes me quit the game after a couple of minutes each time :(. Backed the game because Gray Matter is one my favorite adventure games post LucasArts, but I might have to give up this one and acknowledge it as the first awful game I have bought the last 10 years or so.

Yeah, it isn't good. I played through since it was so easy, and neither ever gets any better.

..If only there was a Star Wars Point and Click Adventure from the guys at Lucas-Arts or ex-Lucas-Arts that would have been awesome! (inspired by Indy Jones and the Fate of Atlantis but in HD!)

yeah...

the closest i can think of is the Star Trek PnC adventure games, those were actually pretty good if i remember correctly, 25th anniversary and Judgement Rites

What the don't I have this game's installer already? Ah well Steam ver. is welcome, thanks for the heads up.

You probably have the QfI demo since they released it with their Kickstarter pitch. The full game is launching soon. Today, I think?

edit: Oh, you were talking about Heroine's Quest. Yeah, that has a non-Steam version. I just link Steam since some people simply won't play non-Steam games.

Didn't know that Heroine's Quest game was free with no other evil intentions besides us enjoying the game?

Installing right now... anyone else play it and give more detailed impressions?

People, Lost Chronicles of Zerzura is now on Steam ($8.99) - pick this game up. It's a shame it's too late for any sales to help save the developer (Cranberry Productions); it was their last game before shutting down. They're also known for the amazing Black Mirror 2 and 3.

Fuck yea!

I'll keep that game in my wishlist thanks.

So I'd impressions for:
Quest for Infamy
Whispering Willows

Both are available on Steam now.

Currently playing Blackwell Legacy... so far so good, i am liking it up to this point. Simple enough "puzzles" and decent, kinda charming characters so far :)

(Though Joey seems slightly creepy, besides the obvious fact of course)

I loved Dreamfall in the past but never played TLJ so I'm playing it now and am in Marcuria now and this is beautiful. So glad I went back to play TLJ + Dreamfall.

Amazing game, and it holds up very well even today.

It looks amazing and the premise of the game is great, but for me it's the only adventure game I actually given up on :\. I just had problem understanding what the game wanted me to do, and I got annoyed by the interface.

I got a Samsung Galaxy s3 android phone, can you recommend me some PnC games available for it? I'm playing Broken Sword arm on vacation whenever the whether is grey. I stopped playing it several times at home because I thought playing modern games on ps4 and 3ds were way more fun but now that I kinda have the time I think it's an intriguing adventure.

I also just beat Detective Grimoire. A cute little mystery game but sadly the writing was as occasionally cringe inducing as in Mass Effect 3.

Broken Sword 1, 2, 5
Machinarium
Gemini Rue
The Silent Age
Simon the Sorcerer
Fester Mudd: Curse of the Gold
ScummVM is on there for emulating the old LucasArts stuff
Kaptain Brawe
Luisure Suit Larry Reloaded
Violett
The Shivah

This website is absolutely amazing. It has a plethora of adventure game reviews, walkthroughs and general information.

The only downside: it's all in Dutch. Google translate does a pretty decent job though. I would highly recommend browsing through this ladies' website, it's a vast and detailed database when looking for that next adventure fix.

Gray Matter has just been released on GOG, 60% off right now. :)

http://www.gog.com/game/gray_matter

IMHO one the best games in the genre post LucasArts.

Fantastic game if you can overlook some of its budget issues (animation, cut scenes etc). Great soundtrack too. Probably my favourite adventure game in a few years.

Really hope Jane Jensen can get back to form. I haven't played it, but by all accounts her new game was terrible.

Gray Matter was a lot better than I expected it would be while Moebius was worse.

I feel like Phoenix Interactive tries to do too much with a limited budget and they'd be better off with pixel art. The latest Blackwell game almost certainly cost less than Moebius but it looks classy as fuck while Moebius is a jankathon.

Speaking of Blackwell, I just noticed that the first game is available on iOS for $2. Seems to be a competent port, like Gemini Rue.

edit: Oh man, they also have parts two and three!

I agree about animations, but I really liked the look of the cutscenes. Unless the production values are extremely high, I always prefer solutions and styles like the one here, over fully animated ones.

Agree about the soundtrack also.
