That's a shame and something that really bothers me a bit (as a lot of Dutchies seem to think so). Coming in 3rd is a considerable achievement. Not caring about this (I think Robben also said that all that counted was going for gold) is disrespectful and arrogant. If you only measure yourself by being the world champion, Holland is and always has been crap. But that's not true and it isn't what you should remember when you think about this and other world cups.

People might call me irrational for being one of the "WC required for GOAT" supporters, but if Argentina win Messi should be remembered as being the sole reason Argentina got out of the group in the first place at the very least.
And yes, people saying Germany will win easily after the 7-1 are silly. It's a new game with the ultimate pressure in football. Argentina could very well win and it would be deserved just like any other team.

Maradona did 5 goals when Argentina won WC last time. Messi has 4 so far so if he scores in final he has same amount (not to mention that in almost every non Messi goal so far he has assist to them).
And just for the people that call this defensive, boring, etc. This was a game of chess of two teams that both could not get a firm grip on the midfield and through that did not get the best attacking opportunities.
This match has nothing to do with parking the bus because the defenders on both sides always tried to look for the footballing solution.

They're actually REALLY close political allies. Brazil fought with Argentina over the Falklands. Argentina is one of the biggest investment countries for Brazil. Politically and economically, very friendly countries.
What a shitgame, Dutch team really needs to step up their game on the offensive, even though second half of the game was in their hands, they just couldn't finish it up with a goal. Same in the Costa Rica match, this time though they lost the penalties.

The whole match kinda sucked, Rafetti had some good openings which made Argentina dominate first half of the game, but they never really recovered after Indi got taken out (who was slower than Rafetti) the rest of them didn't get any other chances. Argentina started this WC as a tactical mess and grew constantly. They played really well against Belgium and Netherlands. Today their defense was really good against Robben. Their whole set up was almost perfect. Bringing Palacio was actually the only bad move, as it really hurt the attack. Also Romero was very good in this game(not only for the PKs).

Argentina were awful in the group stages and Messi carried them out of that, plus he gift-wrapped Di Maria's goal in the round of 16. Fortunately for him in his "off" games (QF somewhat and particularly today) the Argentines really stepped up, especially the back line. I agree that Mascherano deserves a huge amount of praise.

just got home (admittedly drunk) group of 9 of us expats with a life in NL went to the game wearing shirts. Had a bet for a bottle whisky with my colleague who was for ARG. when pens came, I thought i had it in the bag and when they didn't send Krul I congratulated him.

I'm not really a 'football guy' but had van gaal exhausted his subs or some shit like that? why would you take a specialist and not play him? I guess it's somewhat irrelevant as 2 dutchies missed but still...
for the rest, game was a dead heat, congrats to argentina, the teams were deadlocked the whole match didn't see stats but would be suprised if they were much different. I'd guess ARG had slightly more shots.
all in all, a good semi final.

It's because Netherlands has come close so many times and lost it, plus the fact that they were the runner sup in last world cup. They are the only team to have come this close so many times and never win.

The NL keeper dove over a penalty and failed to hold out the one he did give contact on, could've made all the difference in the end even with the saves from Argentina's keeper.

He is not dominant. The way all of us grew to like him.
