Teams do what is needed to win is no justification for shit boring football. I bet you are one of the types of people who champion Mourinhos Chelsea for getting the job done, despite parking the bus in the majority of their games. They have exciting, attacking players in the Argentina side and they do not utilise them half as well as they could. Instead they play over defensively. There is playing defensively, no problem with that, but when it becomes over defensive it ruins the match.

That match right there was awful from both teams, I am genuinely astounded by those who have said it was incredible. Really? I love football, but that was a bit of a dissappointing game.

Also, I'm not hung up on the fact Argentina beat teams with a single goal. It's when they completely don't deserve the win that it annoys me. The Iran game for example. Pure robbery. Sure, this is football, and shit like that happens, but it is still annoying and you expect more from a team such as Argentina (especially when you look at who they have in their squad). Yes, it got them to the final. But they got to the final by playing boring football. They could have done the same by playing with more attacking flair yet they didn't. They aren't an entertaining team at all.

There's no such thing as not deserving a win. If you win, you earned it. End of Story. That's great you love football, but you should pay closer attention to WHY neither team could formulate a meaningful attack(despite Argentina having actual shots on goal/target during the 90 minutes but as you say they were clearly parking the bus). Teams have an obligation to win, not put on a show. Chelsea is my preferred team from the BPL funny enough. I can understand why some people do not like defensive minded teams or even teams who base their game around the counter attack, but that is futbol. It is 100% legitimate.

I recommend you re-watch this game today and observe what the players were doing to shut each other down. The game didn't go to penalties for lack of trying, from both teams.

You may not find Argentina an entertaining team, which is fine, but they are efficient enough to get to the finals. Germany didn't beat France with flair either but I don't remember seeing as much vitriol about it.

It's a fucking party two blocks away from my house. A shame i can't participate.

Are you serious? So, your suggestion for playing against one of the fastest, best counter attacking teams is to push the ball and give them room to work because you find it boring to actually sit your backs farther back. Okay. Thank god no one will ever give you money to coach a team. You don't coach to have people eat their popcorn, you coach to win. De Gaal and Sabella, both, masterfully adjusted to spite the fact that both offenses flourish in the open field. Sit your back line farther and you neutralize the likes of Robben and Messi from exploiting open lanes.

I don't understand. You're basically saying they shouldn't have played that way, even though is incontrovertibly the right call.

Smh. The way they played they wanted extra time. They could have still been more attacking and held a solid defense with some of the attacking players they have. Is this really hard to understand? My god.

Also, let's leave that game out for a second. You try and justify the game against Iran, or the over defensive playstyle in other games where Argentina could easily dominate. It's good that you've accepted and even defend boring football when it isn't needed, but for people like me who love the beautiful game, it gets a bit stale when a team that could do so much more is playing it safe for the WHOLE tournament near enough.

They're actually REALLY close political allies. Brazil fought with Argentina over the Falklands. Argentina is one of the biggest investment countries for Brazil. Politically and economically, very friendly countries.

And this shit rilvalry only got big from late 80's and up. Before 86, even our media considered Uruguay and Italy our worse enemies (probably because they had two WC already and Argentina just one in 78). But it got out of control (for our media) after 90 WC.

The extra time ruined my day. Aside from Obama I would like to thank Argentina.

Maybe in 4 years this world cup finalist and possible winner will actually apply themselves.

Yes, yes, someone who understands and appreciates the tactical side of football doesn't love the beautiful game because goals aren't scored. Are you kidding me? Go watch hockey, basketball, or any number of sports where you can see something go into a net. That way, people who do understand the game and appreciate what it takes to win a game don't have to listen to absolute vitriol.

Your argument has literally become, "i want to see more goals and I don't like when teams play conservatively and intelligently."

EDIT: By the way, where were you for the France/Germany game? Did that game rile you up, too? Oh my god, Germany?! YOU WON BY ONLY ONE GOAL!? How dare they try to contain a dangerous French front line.

They want to win, not entertain you.

Last time they came to entertain they got destroyed and embarrassed under Maradona. This time they are 1-0ing their way to the final.

I know exactly which of the 2 Argentines prefer..

Anyways, some people find this kind of football entertaining m8. Sorry to hear you weren't entertained,

All the people that found this game boring may as well gtfo and go pretend they understand some other sport instead.

They way both teams neutralized each other again and again wasn't only fun to watch, but it showed the respect that they had for each other's stars. I'm fucking tired of people shitting on Messi for 'not doing anything' when half of what he does happens when he isn't even near a ball.

Respect to the Netherlands, they are a great team. Hope the cup stays in South America, where it belongs.

France/Germany was a good entertaining game. This was boring as fuck from both sides. The only reason I'm targetting Argentina is because they've been boring as fuck for nearly the whole tournament.

Not sure where the hate for the Third Place consolation game came from. Of course the players hate it for the most part, but the game is purely for the fans. After going through a slew of tight and intense knockout games, the 3rd place game gives the WC a last hurrah of an open and loose game. Also, usually subs get a chance to start so they play with a lot of energy and passion. The 3rd place game is also a nice insurance policy against the Final, which has been utterly boring 80% of the time the last 30 years.

As a fan if you don't enjoy the 3rd place game, either you never watched one or you're still butt-hurt that your team missed the Finals. But it's usually a great game for neutrals.

After today's game it's pretty clear that messi isn't the greatest of all time nor will he ever be.

Would the greatest player of all time be so anonymous in such an important match? He was more anonymous today than Ozil has been his entire arsenal career which tells you something.

Also my girlfriend asked me at full time if messi was even playing. I doubt anyone would have had to ask this if he really was the greatest of all time

Game was boring as fuck. Hopefully the final is exciting.

Everyone, please understand. Messi is shit because LanceVance's "girlfriend" asked if he was even playing.

So dumb.

Did you ever watch a full-game of Maradona or did you just watch highlights of the goals?

There were quite a few games where he was shutdown for the vast majority of the match until one moment of brilliance brought his team to victory (BRA v. ARG 1990 comes to mind)

Yeah, good call judging his entire life based on one match.

Eh... Both teams #1 priority was to not get burned by counter attacks, that's why they played a slow as hell build up game and didn't create much chances.
And credit has to go to both teams defensively. Nobody left their position and their assignments, so from a tactical standpoint it was an interesting match.
Entertainment value wasn't very high, I'll give you that, but you also have to factor in that it was raining cats and dogs basically the whole game.

Dude, the finals were in 2009 and 2011, get over it already. Van gaal will bring back glory to manutd. Believe.

Lol and you never saw Maradona, Zidane, Brazil ronaldo etc have a quiet match? YouTube highlights won't show those.

Aguero, robben, rvp, Higuain, messi, etc were all quiet. Incredible defending from both teams.

Nah, if I was you I'd watch something else instead. I hear in basketball players score a lot of points, maybe that will hold your attention.

Dude. I sat and watched the whole match and was bored. I've been watching football for almost 15 years. International football, top leagues, secondary leagues. Doesn't mean I can't say it was a boring match.

Again, stop being an elitist prick.

So fucking stupid. Usually people that spout bullshit such as this are those who hardly ever watch the sport in question in the first place. Keep it up mate.

Not sure if its been mentioned but that Belgian fan whose pictures were circulating around got a modeling contract with L'Oreal

Link is in Portuguese but that is the gist of it. Pictures at link. Link

lol what is this i don't even

I love attacking football. I love fast combinations. So at times, it was hard watching my team (Netherlands) play in 2010 and in this cup. I get that a conservative style suits the qualities of this team better, but as a football fan I just can't be happy about it.

Argentina has also used the conservative style in all their matches this WC. It resulted in very boring games. Especially against Belgium, were Argentina straight up murdered the pace of the match. Can't root for such a team, just like I can't root for Chelsea.

Germany is the only remaining team that has played some impressive and attacking football. I feel like they deserve the win.

I sure as hell hope so. I'm still at work, but I recorded the game and I plan to watch it soon as I get home. I've been looking forward to it all afternoon, but the consensus around my area is that the game was pretty boring, even among the neutral fans. I hope they're wrong.

The first half was tense, interesting, a good watch. After halftime both teams refused to take even the tiniest risk and it became boring as fuck. A little life at the veeeery end of extra time wasn't enough.

Oddly enough, I find myself wanting Argentina to win. Not sure why.

Aguero is half dead from injuries, robben looks 80 years old, rvp was killed by Moyes, Napoli killed higuain

Messi has no excuse if he's the goat

lol what is this i don't even

It is a statement of fact based on current events

After today's game it's pretty clear that messi isn't the greatest of all time nor will he ever be.

The Dutch defense and midfield did their very best to neutralize him. And they succeeded.

Unfortunately for us, Argentina managed to do the same thing to Robben and Van Persie.

Oh, this match for 3th and 4th place in a tournament like World Cup is absolutely ridiculous. Who the hell would like to prepare to play that match after losing for a place in the final. Just dumb. FIFA should remove that match in future tournaments because it has no place in the world cup and just annoys the living shit out of people and no one wants it. Specially the players, they just want to go home at that point.
