Giant Bomb #8 | It's a Hit!

Pretty much, and what I was basically getting at was that Patrick was in the right to report on that EA story, every bit as much as sites reported on that MS story. For him to write an article on the fundamentals of reporting for other sites to learn on was just strange.

I think that was what made it such a strange article to write in addition to the click-bait confusing header. You won't believe the news about news that might not be real news.

News.

Oh shit, Dan was team boneless? He's now dead to me.

Boneless wings aren't wings! Go eat a fucking chicken nugget.

I look forward to a generation filled with Sony causing confusion due to them pretending they have exclusives that they don't actually have. They've been championing that shit for a good while, now.

Sony didn't invent the term "console exclusive" and they aren't the only ones who use it. It's a stupid term but let's not pretend it's exclusively (hurr hurr) used by Sony.

Grim Fandango is a console exclusive.
Bloodborne is a console exclusive.
Dragon's Dogma is a console exclusive.

If I have to do my own research afterwards to actually find out what is being communicated, I call that some shitty communication. It is of no benefit to me, the consumer, whatsoever. The only person it benefits is the marketing guy.

No Bloodborne is a PS4 exclusive. Sony own the IP

Yeah, I don't think it's really deceptive, but it's not as clear cut as a lot of people want to argue (at least if you're not already immersed in this world).

If you're savvy enough to be playing games on PC and following E3 I'd say you're probably "immersed in this world".

Bloodborne isn't console exclusive, it's PS4 exclusive. No one would call Bloodborne a console exclusive. Dragon's Dogma was also never called a console exclusive. You're applying this term to things that it was never applied to by anyone.

I roll my eyes when platform holders rattle off "console exclusive" so much... but it's not that deceptive of a term.

There's no doubt it's deceptive, but this has been the case for years. This is probably one of the least egregious instances of hanging on the term "console exclusive" given the surrounding events.

These two things are not mutually exclusive to anyone who understands how the english language works.

They aren't mutually exclusive, they're redundant. No one would say Nintendo games are Nintendo console exclusive, or Sony's Uncharted is console exclusive - they're both simply exclusive.

It's a terrible term because they only trot it out when they want to mention the game, exclusivity, and their platform in the same sentence. It's all about skewing and slanting perception in favour of their platform.

You know what really bothers me about that article Patrick wrote calling out sites that reported the no-dev-kit XB1 story? The fact that the stuff he's calling sites out on is something he's actually done in the past.

A segment of the story Patrick wrote calling out sites a few days ago: http://www.giantbomb.com/articles/why-is-microsofts-plan-to-turn-retail-xbox-ones-in/1100-4953/

Now for that article Patrick wrote back in September: http://www.giantbomb.com/articles/apple-denies-paying-ea-to-delay-plants-vs-zombies-/1100-4747/

There's no timestamp of when the article was updated, however if we go by the first comment in the article (1:17pm) and the first comment that talks about the update (3:04pm) then it was less than two hours before Patrick got the official word from Apple. And then he still makes it sound like he sides with Gibeau's comments. (edit: I'm not thinking; he could have easily waited much longer for a response from Apple before posting the news. He was the first person with the "scoop" for this story.)

Compare that to the official word from Microsoft (which in itself is a bit hazy) that Patrick stands by instead of the original engineer of Xbox at the developer's conference, and not only that, but chides anyone for reporting the story in the first place. What.

I don't get it.

I think Patrick is more willing to give Spencer and Charla the benefit of the doubt, because they are cool and were on his show. Outsiders are more nefarious. He was also spewing stuff about how Microsoft's intentions were the same as Sony around the console reveals. I'm not sure why Microsoft gets the benefit of the doubt. They deserve to be consulted before posting a story.

I don't think the term is deceptive, but the arguments platform enthusiasts devote to it make it seem invented by marketing departments for that reason, although not exclusively. It's much more important (and much clearer) what message it's supposed to send ("You didn't get this one, main competitor in the console space!") than what it actually defines. If we broke it down to [modifier] exclusive = other types of [modifier] are excluded, ignoring instances where [modifier] isn't present, a "PC exclusive" could be a game that's not exclusive to PC, instead being released on one or all consoles/handhelds/mobile devices.

Are you saying that Boyes is an outsider to GB?

I picture some of you with a map on your wall and pictures of Patrick in various places with red-string and pushpins connecting them.

"His assault begins soon, I must warn the others!"

Alot of people complained before that Dan was too much like Jeff. But what they don't realize is that Jeff is just grooming his replacement. For it is written that the high-lord of #teamboneless will inherit the land.

Long (2+ Hours)
Decently Informative (Rorie kept things on track with questions - Brad was playing)
Dan was there (did not add a whole lot).
Was not a funny QL - but worth it if you have interest in the game

All I need really.

Though my ideal would be a brad vinny co-op with vinny messing around. :'( Maybe as another feature.

I dunno, I think "console exclusive" is a dumb term. I understand why they say it, but I still think its dumb.
Pretty much.
It'd be great if they'd just say the specific platforms, but that's never going to happen during these conferences.
Always have to look for angles that position the brand in the most positive light possible, so we'll have these silly obfuscating marketing phrases that don't necessarily mean a whole lot.
"Debuting exclusively on" is probably the most meaningless. The game could be out on all other platforms the day after and that phrase would still be accurate.

It's not exclusively used by Sony, but they've been the biggest perpetrator of it since the generation started.

I'm not quoting marketing and I'm not claiming past application; I'm citing examples of correct language use. "Grim Fandango is a console exclusive" communicates a true statement.
"Bloodborne is a console exclusive", by all the common rules of english, does also. And, indeed, so does "Dragon's Dogma is a console exclusive".

They aren't mutually exclusive, they're redundant. No one would say Nintendo games are Nintendo console exclusive, or Sony's Uncharted is console exclusive - they're both simply exclusive.

I completely disagree with the bolded. Plenty of people would be fine with those descriptions, because they are accurate. There's nothing wrong with the sentences. The only people who would call them out as improper are people who are entirely too familiar with what's considered 'normal' PR buzzterms and marketing speak. Gaffers and the rest of our ilk.

A company claiming 'console exclusive' would have you believe they are doing so to communicate a selling point to their consumers. That's not just the hardcore forum-frequenting hobbyists, that's all consumers. But the vast majority of those consumers don't consume the industry of videogames like we, gods help us, tend to do. That dude who sits on the other side of the office and idly buys a few games a year after reading editorial in the free newspaper, he, gods bless him, is not aware of the 'proper PR usage' of the term "console exclusive". It could mean a number of things to him because it doesn't mean anything specific.

It is absolutely possible for an average gamer to see "console exclusive" in the description of a game and completely get the wrong end of the stick as to what's being conveyed. And the fault for that misunderstanding would not lie at the feet of the consumer.

"I would be bummed if a game had to leave a certain amount of system memory so I could hot swap something else into it."

VINNY CARREVELLA 5/22/12 He hates the xbone!

I went to check out Gamespot since I've got nothing better to do, and there's a combined 19 people chatting+lurking in their live "Now Playing" show right now? Am I seeing this right?

I don't understand why CBSi haven't at least tried to put some of the GS live shows in the GB chat when GB isn't streaming anything. It would make perfect sense from a business perspective, and I can't see how it would be much backlash against it among GB fans.

You sure about that? :p

Personally, I wouldn't be against it or anything, but it would strike me as out of place. Shows featuring Danny, however, would fit right in.

Maybe I underestimate the GB community's ability to blow everything way out of proportions (I remember much doom and gloom about the short-lived Wedensday show:P), but it's just about using the chat to promote some GS content. It's not like it's something I want myself (I wouldn't mind it though), but it's just strange that they haven't even tried it. They need the viewership for their live shows, that's for sure.

It makes sense for events like E3, but for regular shows GB would have to worry about viewer fatigue. If fans get live alerts or see the homepage notification, no matter how good the GS show is, they'll be disappointed it's not a GB show. Keep that up long enough and viewers start ignoring actual GB live shows.

Basically, it becomes The Boy Who Cried (Scoops and the) Wolf.

edit: Their twitch has 83 viewers, that's brutal. When Jeff farts around in a car, he gets ten times that.
