TLOU Remastered screenshots (PS Blog)

My opinion on the screenshots: I think they aren't indicative of the IQ of the actual game but are pretty close. The IQ in those screenshots is pretty much perfect where as the TV ad showed some aliasing. I expect the gameplay to be pretty clean and the actual game overall to be really clean but I expect to see bits of aliasing.

Wow. So clean.

Yeah those screens have been sharpened alright. It's called 1080p vs 720p with proper AA. Will you guys just stop it already. Unless you have proof that these are downsampled please refrain from baseless accusations.

Ehh there's a sharpening filter applied to those pics, completely unrelated to resolution.

I won't say they're bullshots but in 99% of all cases, screens with sharpening filter and perfect IQ mean just that.

I hope the sharpening filter is BS. It's more subtle here than other places but it still sucks. Artificial sharpening pisses me off.

Why so defensive? I don't think it's a stretch to wonder if these are bullshots. Until ND shows the game in motion at 1080p 60fps there's little reason to assume that the handful of images is indicative of the final product.

It's not a stretch at all. 1080p looking that clean would require something like 4xSSAA \ SGSSAA. I have no idea people are so adamant to believe these AREN'T downsampled. Like there's any reason to trust pre-release media these days.

I prefer to be skeptical and be pleasantly surprised later.

It's probably sharpening applied via a downsampling algorithm (like bicubic sharper in photoshop).

I think it's because inFamous wound up having great IQ. I can tell the sifference between the prerelease shots and my own but many don't know what to look for.

Is there a full size comparison of these 2 images?

I like the original intended image as much as possible, to the point where I don't even like using graphical mods for older games, but I'd be lying if I said I don't enjoy some sharpening. It's the reason I prefer Ordered Grid over Sparse Grid, I like the sharper image.

Of course, there's OGSSAA sharpening and then there's CDPR sharpening, but a little bit doesn't hurt. In other words, I wouldn't complain because it's too sharp if the final game ends up looking like those shots.

if i'm playing X-COM on my ipad and then switch to my PC, i'm expecting to buy a new copy of the game

if I'm playing X-COM on my ps3 and then switch to 360, i'm expecting to buy a new copy of the game.

if i'm playing DW8 on my Ps3, and then switch to a ps4, and then switch to my pc, i'm expecting that i'll have paid for the game 3 times.

New Platform, new copy of the game.

A ps4 is more than just a bigger video card and hard drive and you know it.

Never thought I'd see the day where people would actively defend the lack of backwards compatibility and yet, here we are. Oh well...

I guess it looks alright; waiting for gameplay. I hope they didn't change the contrast when you play in game. I really liked the way the game looked in game.

Looks nice and clean (although I see edge sharpening? Looks weird) but it isn't as impressive as I expected it to be. I thought it would receive a Tomb Raider style treatment given how silent Naughty Dog have been... :\

They replaced every NPC model (not just one), significantly improved shadow detail, improved texture detail, added AA, added AF, added photo mode, and it's 1080/60. That's more than Tomb Raider DE did.

What now. Does it still look not much better to you? :D And note, aliasing of PS3 TLOU game is much more visible in motion.
The trees and shadows definitely look better on remaster edition, but the models almost look the same can't really tell from the screen shot though. Will definitely wait till I've played it to make my final decision tho, although by that point I really won't care how it looks.

I know a ton of people that didn't even play this on the ps3 including myself. I'll wait until a price drop a little on the ps4 version but I'll defiantly get it eventually.

Its a nice enhancement over the ps3 version, buts definitely not as much of a jump as Tomb Raider DE compared to its PS3 counterpart. TLOU already looked damn good to begin with.

I'm speechless. Even if the power lines are a little jagged, do you really care enough to complain? Will it detract from your experience enough to not buy the game because some black lines 10 meters higher than your head are jagged? Christ, Gaf! :(

I live in an old part of town and we don't even have power lines anymore, they were all buried. I think game designers need to start burying power lines in games because they usually look terrible. Having a crawling, stepped line can be distracting and make your product look worse. #devsburythosepowerlines

They don't look THAT much better than some of the PS3 screenshots I have seen posted here on GAF.

Exactly why Naughty Dog didn't release screens of it. Sometimes I just don't get video game fans. Go to a PC and play any game and bump it up from 720 to 1080, there's not going to be much of a difference! It's a rerelease of a game that came out last year!

My eyes have trouble adjusting to how crisp it looks. I had the same shock going from 720p FF14 on PS3 to 1080p on PS4.

Seems people are talking more about IQ than FPS in here but I may aswell post it

nhkSDfW.jpg

And people said I was trolling when I was arguing the 30fps lock was a design choice rather than an alternative for a wonky 60fps...

Where'd you get the original image from? If it's a youtube screen cap, we might as well discard this as an invalid comparison.

I don't know, the images aren't mine.

I'll gladly update the post if someone takes a direct feed shot of the same part and upscale it to 1080p, I'm just too lazy to look for it.

It seems the PS4 shots have some kind of sharpening filter on them. I play 1080p all the time on PC so it's not me not being used to it.

Just look at the barbed wire on the left. It's quite improved.

I refuse to believe the ps3 version looked as bad as it did in the top screen (I played the ps3 version)

Thats actually a direct feed shot blown up to 1080p but the Ps4 shot is a bullshot(unless NaughtyDog found the holy grail of anti aliasing)

Is it not possible for someone to analyze this thoroughly before dismissing it as a bullshot? If not, I'll just wait for the inevitable DF article to prove it one way or the other. I neither have the skills nor the skepticism to make a conclusion.

Seconded. A reasoned analysis would be greatly appreciated.

waaat. if you haven't played it you should just get this day one man

It has been analyzed thoroughly:
-There is literally zero aliasing
-There is a sharpness to the image that isn't present in normal 1080p direct feed shots
-There is edge-ringing, a usual sign of using a downsampling filter like Bicubic Sharper
-Naughty Dog has released lots of downsampled game screenshots in the past and this would align with those habits
-The images are likely downsampled from 4K or possibly higher

I purposely didn't complete a playthrough of this game on Ps3. I am depressed because i have to wait 2 days after it releases until i can buy it!

Never forget:

RIP in Peace PS3

Yeah I definitely remember this one to be direct feed. Scaling that up to 1080p is how it looked on my TV. The game looks amazing in motion, but when you pay attention to the details, it had severe IQ issues

Thanks! Anyone on GAF who disagrees with this?

If you stopped to smell the roses, they could cut you.

People who like to think that GAF is one person with one opinion will think we're just shitting on the PS3 version now to praise the PS4 one, but I remember you also not being fond of the IQ even before they announced the remaster.

It always felt like it was doing too much for the hardware it was in, so it could never achieve the look it was going for. The general IQ was just terrible. That always made it so I could never quite agree with people saying it was the best looking PS3 game. It had the potential to be, but couldn't reach that potential.

Just look at the barbed wire on the left. It's quite improved.

The PS3 version's isn't even barbed wire. It looks like someone painted yellow circles on the image.

But there's no way that's direct source for the PS3 version. Way too compressed and blurry. Looks ripped from Youtube. You can still clearly see the difference in textures, AA, foliage, LOD, etc. but the IQ is way off and that people actually think it really looked that bad might actually paint ND and the original game in a bad light.
