iOS Gaming July 2014: With Sunburned iOS Devices And Sweaty Fingers All Around

Oh man. Tiny Thief really is fucking brilliant. I could play it forever.

I'm glad you love it. In my opinion it's easily one of the best games on ios. Up there with Year Walk, Device 6 and Kingdom Rush for me. I too could literally play it forever if the content flowed like water. I imagine it takes a lot of talent and hours to come up with those levels and artwork.

World of Tanks Blitz is freaking amazing. They captured all of what made the PC version great and put it on iOS. Got my new crack.

It also plays beautifully with controller. Half the reason I started to play it.

Finding it hard to get back into Monster Hunter though, unfortunately. That "vertical lock" camera... Gah I wish they'd have fixed that. So annoying, febatably even more so now that I'm playing with a DS3 and I want those degrees of freedom.

While in talking about controllers and iOS, Asphalt 8 is the best racer to come out in years (maybe minus the freemium Grundy bullshit but the flip side is that the grinding is fun). I played it with my DS3 all afternoon and it was glorious, drifting around turns and pulling triple corkscrews. Ahh I think I'll go play some more.

Star Command is on sale for .99. How is it? I remember hearing mixed reviews on it back when it was released.

It's bad. I've played it a while ago and from what I understand they have updated it somewhat since then so take this with that in consideration but from what I played it was a mind numbing boring and strategically dull space combater which involved waiting for timers to tick up rather then actually making interesting choices with fairly poorly written dialog inbetween. It gets a little better in play through 2 onward cos you get a bigger and more interesting ship but by then you are 4 hours in which is a little rubbish. For 69p its probably worth checking out if you are interested but just be aware that I think a lot of people are gonna bounce off this game hard in the first 30 minutes or so, I know I really had to force myself through it.

I bought the PC version near when it released, and never was the "I have no idea what I'm doing" image more appropriate for me. But bought anyway, maybe I'll work out something this time.

Are people still enjoying Monster Hunter? I have been debating getting it but am wondering how it is without a controller (I do not have one for my iPad)

Pretty well, one of the best touch screen implantations of an action game for sure.

I just wish you could move them, holding an iPad air at the bottom is a pain.

Yeah, this game made realize that I would be the worst general in the history of the universe. Still, if you want challenging tactics, this is the game for you and it runs flawlessly on the iPad

Yes. Just reached 4 star in Pokke village. I beat a Green Plesioth with a touch controlled GS. Game's legit.

I still need to play 868-hack, I like Hoplite so I guess I need to?
I liked 868 Hack, but not as much as Hoplite. It's certainly a solid roguelike, but it never hooked me the same way that Hoplite did. But it's certainly worth a try if you enjoy the genre. If you're on the fence cause of the price, you can try the original 7DRL version here

Tried the free version, a bit hard to get my head around but I'll probably pick up the iOS version at some point.

Looks like it hasn't ever been discounted, so I won't hold my breath.

Gosh golly, this looks swell.

I was always on the fence with 868-Hack but after playing that original version I knew what I had to do next... play it on the go. Thanks!

868-hack is a helluva game. Ugly as sin, but is an absolute joy to play. It's very well-suited for metro/bus rides, as the matches are short, and you can stop at any time. Don't let its price deter you, it's definitely worth the money

YES! The wait is over, Mad Bullets is available on the App Store for FREE!
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mad-bullets/id770839469
Shoot the West into pieces in this frantic railshooter with the easiest control of all time!

This is actually a well done shooter so far. Reminds me of a Time Crisis/Virtua Cop type shooter. Graphics are great and cartoony and I really like the color based RED = bad guy/thing, GREEN = good guy/thing. Makes it obvious what I should shoot.

As for IAP, I have only played it for a little bit but mostly it seems like the IAP is only for continuing/boosts? It seems like if I simply want to go through levels shooting things I can do that all I want too. (so no wait timers)

For the limited amount of time I've played it I've enjoyed it a lot!

Just spent the evening with Botanicula. What a beautiful little game.

The iPad is just made for pointy clicky adventure puzzle games. I'm saving the last chapter of Tiny Thief, cos I don't want that game to end. I couldn't stop playing Botanicular, and accidentally finished it in one sitting. On to Year Walk next. After that... i dunno.

Bring on The Room 3.

Yes. I am playing Monster Hunter right now on my iPad Mini and it's, as expected, the best iOS game to date.

- Not counting the upscaled PSP cutscenes, the game looks amazing. Extremely crisp.
- 30 frames per second on my iPad Mini (NON-retina). It never drops below 30 which makes the gameplay true to the original game(s).
- Controls are fucking fantastic, but it will take some time for new players to adapt. I'm currently playing with my right hand using the "claw"-technique.
- Tons and tons of content to be had, but that's expected from a Monster Hunter game.

Buy this. This is literally the best thing you'll be able to buy on iOS if you're even remotely interested in the genre.

Very fun so far. The feel of the gameplay and interaction meets expectations based on the trailers etc that were out before release. It feels very solid. Couple things I can't figure out yet.

Does making any iap disable adds? Or is that $2.99 on top of any purchase? Seems a bit much to have it be separate.

Are the levels just branching and you make progress over time or are there actual different levels at some point you can start from? Continuing is expensive so will tske a long time or skill to get far.

Seems like a lot of fun but everything in game and real purchase seems a bit pricy so I worry about having to grind the same levels too much. Although they feel different every time which is a great touch.

Wait, the touch controls are fantastic? ???

Yes. It might take some time if you're new to MH to get used to, but it's fantastic once you start to "get" it.

they work well on ipad?

I feel like 90% of virtual control games work fine on iphone, but they put the buttons too far apart on ipad, like they never playtested.

i dont like how i have to reach up to the top to hit menus for most of this stuff.

Monument Valley!

Just got a clearance logitech powershell this morning
I realise they're bad
and was wondering if there's actually anything that benefits from it's use.

I've already got Terraria and saw that there was a KOF a few years ago that supports it. Outside of that I'm all ears.

Thanks so much! The IAP's are for progression too, so You'll be in advanced position by the upgrades! You can play the game fully without these, but the upgrades makes you much more badass in the game! Oh, and don't forget to destroy the environment too!! :)

Does Terraria allow you to craft with the controller? I was considering a steelseries (which has the sticks as well) but fuck having to keep using the screen as well...

Thanks! About the ads, we're working on a trade-off, but until then, only the disable ads turns off them. Stay tuned, we will make a compromise for this as soon as possible!

I really need one iOS gaming website, besides of this excellent thread. Found toucharcade and slidetoplay. Any other good websites, which is the best?

At least the design is by far the best. Thank you! I guess I will rely on a combination of Touch Arcade and Pocket Tactics then.

Pocket Gamer is my favorite. They cover a lot of interesting more under-the-radar games that might get overlooked on other sites, their articles are well written, and they're very conservative with their reviews, very rarely giving out perfect scores. That might be a minor thing, but I think it gives their reviews and scores a lot more weight compared to other sites.

PocketGamer is really good. The place is really trustworthy and dont fall into hype like TouchArcade. And their reviews are much closer to what it really is, not trying to sell, but to show how it works. And they have a much better rating system, giving perfect scores more carefully. A place you can trust. (Not like TouchArcade and its hype).

Same with AppSpy. They lack the good rating system but the rest is even better. James is a cool dude and have a great taste about things. Also does a lot of Hands on stuff.

SlideToPlay was good until 148apps took over. Now its downhill.

I see the F2P Sword & Poker has been released... for those of you looking to take chances lol. I enjoyed the other two so much, I'm going to give it a try anyway.

I bought one as well yesterday. The analog dpad is really horrible because you have to push down all the way for it to register in most games. I haven't really found any games that are good with it though the Sonic games work alright but nothing amazing. I was hoping to pick up Monster Hunter to try it with the controller but I heard its Standard Controller support is poor. It's a pretty crummy controller but it does have a battery so it makes the purchase worth it. I'll probably give a few more games a go later (Bastion, Limbo etc) and report back. I wish the Moga Ace Power was at a decent price because you really need those analog sticks and multiple triggers. I probably won't be able to use the upcoming controllers if the new iPhone is a different size.

Pocket Tactics is by far the best site but Pocket Gamer is also very good. They're the only sites that seem to have a rigorous review score policy.

Touch Arcade used to be awful but it's been getting a little better lately. They added some decent writers who know adjectives other than "cool" and "awesome". They're not very selective about what they cover, though. Lots of infinite runners and flappy bird clones.

Slide To Play is not very good and hasn't been for many years. They were the site that gave a perfect score to the free to play Dungeon Keeper remake.

I just got Monster Hunter Freedom Unite and wow. Pretty impressive. I'm not sure I can sink the amount of required time into my phone and I hope it doesn't ruin MH4U for me.

Rhythm of fighters got a new update with a new Fatal Fury sound pack.

Love this game, but haven't gotten around to buying one of the packs yet. Kinda on the fence but i think I'll splurge soon.
