Don't stir the pot. This is about stereotyping white person behavior, cuz they're all the same.

Someone's mad and very confused on the film's purpose. How offended do you feel?

Pretty shallow complaint. What does this even mean?

Haven't you heard? It's the new thing all the cool kids do. Anything about minority groups voicing concerns now gets reduced to "lol tumblr whiners."

Watching this.

Also, Dennis Haysbert is the fucking man. I miss him from The Unit so badly. Can't believe he's freaking 60, man hasn't aged a day in the last 10 years. He looks exactly the same from when when he was on 24.

Cringeworthy....at least after watching the trailer. It was like they tried too hard. Not the actors, but the message/script. :/

I don't know, I have had to tell a lot of people the same things that the girl on the radio station says to their face.

"Yes, it's racist dating a black guy to piss off your dad; No, you're not inherently racist if you don't have any black friends, but it is a little racist if you think that you need a 'black friend quota"; And for the last god damn time, STOP touching my head!"

I fucking hope not. Really fed up that women of color are being led into lead roles in media, but only if they pursue and fuck white men.

Well, that's certainly an interesting take on it.

What? Like who? Mixed race relationships are bad now?

I think we know WAY too little about this movie and their relationship to make a judgment on whether or not it panders to a white audience.

From what I've read about the filmmakers, I bet they'll use it as a realistic source of conflict in their relationship.

Did I say mixed-race relationships are bad? I specifically said that women of color only get pushed into the spotlight in TV and movies when there is a white male romantic love interest. These are observable facts. I don't care if they hurt your feelings.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is one of the few shows in which two Latinas are prominently featured and were pursued by two white guys but nothing came of it: one is unaware/doesn't care and the other turned white dude down. Pretty sure Samberg's character will eventually hook up with her though.

Everywhere else, blacks, Asian and Latinas MUST hook up with white guys while the scant few men of color (if any, maybe in the background) are practically asexual.

On a serious note I can't say I liked the trailer. It sounds like college theater actors reciting tumblr posts. Nothing sounds natural in the trailer. Maybe the film is different. Spike Lee's early films had natural dialogue that flowed, even when it was being heavy handed.

That's my problem with the trailer.

I was just hit with some casual racism!

I was helping out on a shoot and it was outside. It's sunny as fuck today in NYC and we were joking about how there's no reward for coming out here and doing this. I said something along the lines of "Yea all I get is to sit here sweating through my shirt. Maybe I'll get a tan."

Then a co-worker says "Lol, can you even tan?"

The set just kind of went silent. I didn't really want to address it so I just said "We got that on film right?".

Kids say the darndest things. Immamakhimseedismovie.

How do you propose black women in the media should be represented in an interracial romantic situation?

There is no reason to believe that this movie about a black woman's pursuit of a white man; if they are in a relationship, it looks benign, from the few seconds we saw.

This is the weirdest post. Interracial relationships on tv/movies are bad because you have a conspiracy theory about why people of two different races would be represented on screen?

Seriously?

How about actual diversity that doesn't always have white people in the spotlight?

It'd be nice to regularly see something other than white male lead + minority female co-lead drooling after said man.

What part of any of my posts said that Dear White People is specifically a movie about a black girl chasing a white guy? Someone said "I bet she's chasing white dude" and I said "I hope not because TIRED trope."

You guys aren't even trying to read what I said and just getting offended that someone is shitting on white men always being the center of attention on popular media.

In a movie named 'Dear White People'?.

If your mad at the "trend" and not "inter-racial couples", do you have proof of the trend? (black and curous)

No, I'm pretty sure I read you correctly. You dislike women of color being with a white male in tv/film. You think it's because the actresses "have to".

Am I wrong?

Otherwise I stand by my statement that your post was weird.

On topic: I'll definitely watch this (white dude here), it looks fun and that "I see you have a thing for taylor swift" "I was so careful...." was hilarious.

He said "I bet she ends up with the white dude" when it seems like they're already in a relationship, IMO. Again, I don't see anything inherently wrong with that, especially since it is remarkably obvious that SHE is the lead and HE might be a co-lead.

You guys aren't even trying to read what I said and just getting offended that someone is shitting on white men always being the center of attention on popular media.

Hahaha, you clearly don't know shit about me. Read any of my posts in threads dealing with white privilege, plz.

The only move I'm likely to go see in the theater this year...

Hope this comes to au some way. Would like to watch. Can't imagine it coming out here though :<
Would have to be revamped with Aboriginal cast and another set of issues that are different (but exactly the same).

He's not the co-lead and I think her love interests is a character named Reggie

Im not being obtuse. Im asking why you're so outraged at the idea of the main character ending up with a white guy. Which you clearly are.

Not in all instances, no. You're trying way too hard to reduce my argument into a deplorable stance ("Jado HATES all WoC hooking up with white men in media!"), one that you can easily attack. AGAIN:

I dislike the lack of variety in interracial relationships. It's not really inclusive diversity representative of the makeup of interracial couples throughout the country when a movie or show demands that one of the two individuals must be a white man. The latter gets shoehorned and exists solely to make sure white audiences don't feel alienated. This is similar to white savior tales in which the person of color needs the help of a good white person to get anything done. I am not accusing Dear White People of doing this. I merely said I hope not, because this is cliched and tired to constantly do.

Again, at what point did anyone say this? You're trying to pull me into an argument for something I never said or implied.

It would be. We had a show called flashforward where John Cho's character and Gabrielle Union's character were romantically involved. I remember being so intrigued by it because it's something that I rarely see in real life.

Unfortunately, the show was cancelled. I'm not saying it was due to that, but I don't think America knows what to due with couples they can't relate to.

Here's a clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08j_zbAgdlE#

Ha! I got banned for using the word "mulatto". Or at least I think that's why I was banned, "SMH" was the very unhelpful reason given. I heard the word years ago in a Nirvana song, looked it up and assumed it was acceptable to use given the definition. I really have no idea of it's use and abuse in the US.

Kinda wish I'd seen this movie years ago to avoid that banning.

Mulatto is derived from the word Mule. A Mule is a sterile offspring of a Donkey and a Horse. The Donkey and the Horse are two different species of animal. Black people and White people are not two different species. Which is why their offspring are not sterile.

This is why the term is offensive. It is a relic from a racist time where racist white people considered offspring of black/white couples to be something unfortunate and something to be discouraged.

Hopefully the Sam characters discusses this further in the movie.

Yes because that is exactly what this is about. Does this movie offend you? Can you relate to the white people in this film?

Who knows, I've never seen it. Neither have you. But I can anticipate the type of exaggerated stereotypes being portrayed in it. For entertainment's sake, nothing wrong with that.

Someone's mad and very confused on the film's purpose. How offended do you feel?

It's not the film I was commenting on. My statement was about this thread:

Why are white people so passive aggressive?

They can't say exterminate the mud people in public anymore cause of the pc gestapo.

Do I think that's offensive? Yes, I do.

It's not a word I've never actually heard used in this country so I'm not sure how prevalent it is over there. Half-caste would probably be the closest, similarly charged term in Australia but it's very rare to see a reference to it these days, but the term used to be used in government policy.

Travisbickle was responding to Camp Lo's post about racists on IMDB. Why do you seem more concerned that someone calls out racism with a benign statement (why are white people so passive aggressive) than the actual examples of it? Is it because you think he's talking about all white people?

Pizarro's post was a sarcastic criticism specifically about those racist IMDB users and other like-minded persons. I see nothing wrong with shitting on the idiots who think the film shouldn't exist. If you're white, don't take it as a personal attack on you or all whites.

This could be fun. I'm in, but probably not right away. Don't really feel like this is a movie that I want to see in theaters.
