Digital Foundry: Destiny Beta XB1 analysis and PS4 comparison

The biggest game if the year is going to be more or less identical on both current consoles. Meaning that every one can enjoy the amazing/identical experience. A certain group of people on here are going to take major issue in that. It's a shame

I watched a GDC talk about how they implemented the character system and they decided to limit what they could do based on the 360/PS3. So you know there's probably a million decision like that that end up meaning everyone gets roughly the same product. They aren't going out of their way to make the PS4 version worse.

edit: the talk if you're interested. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSSMC4O6J8Q

nice edit, I was just going to ask.

What kind of post is that?

You realize the thread title, don't you?

This is the first Destiny thread I've read where this many people are saying that Destiny's graphics don't look good, and are basically an up-ressed last-gen game. How surprising!

maybe you don't browse enough, in every destiny graphics thread this get mentioned. on the bolded it is fact, its coming to the last gen consoles, and from the previews they're great versions, not there because of a cheap cash grab. when you see the graphics comparisons the gap is not that big, even other multiplatforms titles showed bigger differences.

It's hilarious people try to twist this issue to make people expecting more from superior hardware the bad guys. People are annoyed when devs don't seem to take the time to try to get some extra milage out of the superior tech, not that people on the inferior tech get something worthwhile.

It would still be amazing on X1 if the PS4 version was a little better graphically. The vast majority of multiplats so far this haven't been made with parity in mind, yet they were/are loved by millions on both consoles. So I see no reason why Bungie have chosen to aim for graphical parity.

But like some people have said, we don't know the exact reasons why Bungie have aimed for parity, but there's nothing wrong with people being disappointed that their console isn't being used to it's full potential. Nothing wrong at all.

Exactly.

And we should all be paid minimum wage. That way everyone makes the same and we're all happy.

they don't have to do anything big, just get rid of that FXAA on the PS4 version. they can use the same technology that infamous ss used.

Ewww FXAA, I'm surprised that there's only a handful of people here complaining about that. For all this parity and graphics talk, you'd think you guys would talk about the worst AA solution in the market.

Personally, I do feel like they could have definitely done more with the PS4 version, but as primarily a PC gamer, it's hard to symphatize with you folks and you know why.

I would really love to see the reaction if a Bungie decided not to use the extra 10% reserve from the Kinect to have parity with the 360. I wonder how a certain group of people will act about that.

IIt's really annoying to see some people talk down people who would love to see there system used to it's fullest capacity. Everyone actually wants it, even the people who have parity now, but God forbid if some want the same thing as well.

Why is it always the juniors who say stuff like this:

Well done for Bungie for having parity, amazing developers!

When clearly this is the case (didn't Bungie even admit to it?):

this^^^, the game isn't a looker, and its not that advanced. bungie just choose not to improve the PS4 version in this situation, a situation that many people were afraid of.

And then we have this re:PS360 versions:

Why would they do that? they are different powered machines.

Because they did that in the PS4/XB1 versions?

As this poster said:

We have come full circle.

I thought that Destiny looked great after playing on PS4. Then I saw this in the screenshot thread...

Now I'm confused.

so where's the parity for the 360/PS3, since they are much closer in terms of power than PS4/Xbone, or is parity only when it benefits the xbox platform?

Asking Bungie to use different AA or something similar to take advantage of the console hardware differences isn't the same thing as building assets for high end GPUs. I hope people can see the difference between these when they bring up the PC comparison.

Maybe they can't. I still don't see why it wouldn't be legitimate criticism in that case either.

Who knows how the final version ends up, but it's just a fact that if they run at visual and performance parity then they fucked up.
So even when Bungie isn't capable of improving the PS4 version in the given time, you'd still blame them? That's messed up.

Exclusive vs 4 multiplatform. Level size, one is multiplayer, etc. etc.

As this poster said:

Obviously travisbickle is being sarcastic, and I assume samar11 is doing the same thing.

Did you play Halo 2 or 3?

This is a technical moon wizard by comparison to those.

Maybe it's taken for granted, but I thought the seamless transitions between outside and inside areas to be quite the achievement considering the relative lack of texture popping* while still having relatively interesting geometry in the landscapes.

*not counting the grass or decal LOD distance.

Who else would be to blame for Bungie's technical failings other than Bungie?

Maybe we're working from different assumptions. I'm coming from the assumption that the PS4 is without doubt the most powerful platform the game is being released on. Do you agree?

I genuinely don't get this false PC equivalence people throw around all the time. A PS4 is a discrete thing. A PC is not. All ps4s have the exact same tech. A dev can optimize for a ps4. Not all PCs have the same tech. A dev cannot possibly optimize for all PC configurations. People just act like PCs are some standardized high end console or something. They're not and there's a huge amount of variance in their capabilities.

What are they failing at? That they can't make the PS4 version look (significantly better) than the Xbox One version where they had MS internal engineers working with them? If that's failing than you've got unrealistic expectations of devs.

They have 4 products to deliver, and people seem distraught that 1 of the 4 isn't getting extra time devoted to it. I don't see an issue.

Yup. It's insane. It's simply insane I tell you. Just floors me.

When one machine is at least 30% more powerful, games should probably look a little better on it regardless of dev hand-holding. It's not like a couple MS guys hanging out in Bungie's office have the Xbone more RAM.

I really hope Bungie keeps 900p if 1080p introduces a shit frame rate. Beta runs great as it is.

Also it's pretty funny how I didn't notice the chromatic aberration being gone, it just felt like the HUD was cleaner and easier to look at. They should put that as an option for the PS4 version.

At using the platform which has better hardware to improve the image quality.

I don't see why Bungie needs you white-knighting them. You haven't answered whether or not you share the same assumptions, either.

Maybe you agree with the following however: Microsoft has some of the smartest graphics programmers in the world and they would never let Sony get a 30%+ advantage.

Hmmm I don't think so... seeing as one system was and the other wasn't. Obviously parity comes due to extra time being devoted to it. So....

I heard that they invented directX. I've tried to let that soak in, and my only conclusion is that they, in fact, couldn't possibly give up that kind of an advantage.

There's only one benefit I see of them trying to go 1080p on the Xbox One: If assumptions are correct, and they do end up having to make visual cutbacks to hit it, then people will finally start to see that a lower resolution isn't the end of the world, and is a far better alternative to 1080p with the game's graphical detail sacrificed in more serious ways than a simple matter of a lower resolution.

Well, since it's Friday and all: would you want Grey Goose or Smirnoff? It you can afford it, you'd much rather have the Grey Goose wouldn't ya? Well, that's what PS4 owners want, they don't want the more common and less refined Smirnoff that everyone can afford. They want the extra taste, refinement and aura that Grey Goose can give you...

use those terms today, it more globally accepted than using techie terms on a Friday...

the more time flies by, the better those Sam Summers are looking in my fridge at home for late night gaming tonight

Right. People are distraught that Bungie isn't spending extra time on PS4. The extra time and love for X1 came from MS giving them resources. That's free time and resources for Bungie. This doesn't mean Bungie should tit or tat on the PS4 version just because. Who says they wouldn't use Sony engineers if provided? The MS help is a variable added that helps the X1 and that's it, but people seem to want extra time and resources thrown at PS4 when the dev bandwidth may not be there from Bungie.

Clever use of leaving out part of my post, let me lower myself to your level.

There have been plenty of reasons given as to why Destiny is in the situation it's currently in by me, StoOgE and a couple of others. Yet you, and some others, insist on ignoring that and going "hurp derp XX% more powerful" as if it's some magical duct-tape that will fix anything.

I guess it's useless to try to discuss this any further as we'll keep hitting a dead-end. I'm taking my leave from this thread.
Maybe you agree with the following however: Microsoft has some of the smartest graphics programmers in the world and they would never let Sony get a 30%+ advantage.
How many times have you posted this already? Don't you ever get tired of your own childish behavior?
