Found a better picture of the old me. On the left, XL shirt, 38 inch waist. On the right, M shirt, 32 inch waist. 2011 vs today.
Awwww, I feel I am missing out. These photos don't show (at least on my work computer). :p

Edit: Ok, after some magic I managed to make them to show. Attaboy! Great job!

Man, y'all are beautiful people. I'm currently on a diet, trying to get my body fat % down to single digits. It's my fourth year of lifting and the first time I'm starting so see some abs. At this rate, I might be done cutting come september. Gonna post a pic then! :)

Sounds extremely good! We are all waiting! :D

I went and looked at my MFP weight graph.

Im basically down 20lbs in a bit over a month.

Feels like it has been longer.

Ive been sticking to a 1500 kcal low carb(<50g) plan with just the exercise I get at work, which is mostly light walking and some stair action in unconditioned space.

Most days it looks like I eat only 1300 and I regularly am only hungry before I go to bed as the gap between dinner and bed is the longest.

Cant wait till I get enough weight off my knees so i can pick up more exercising.

Thanks! So far the highlight of my weight loss was a person (who lacked class) asked me if I was sick. I was taken aback and flattered at the same time! Also got so many compliments in front of an obese coworker he joined my gym and gave up soda. Never thought of myself as a role model, ha!

Oh, and my current after picture is next year's before pic! Already seeing results after a month of Starting Strength!

Hahah, I am loving your attitude! Well done. Keep at it! :D

I am also the same with my colleagues. Even if they aren't even obese, one of them started to go to gym and another goes to gym way more often than she used to because they think I am an inspiration. I think it is insane (in a very good way). :p

question for you guys

Right now I'm just focusing on losing fat by doing lots of cardio, swimming, and cutting calories. I'm gonna start lifting in the fall when I have access to a gym, and I plan on buying the starting strength book, but how do I know how much weight to start out on? Is it just trial and error (without hurting myself), or is there some way to calculate it or something?

If you are truly a beginner and have never really lifted weights before, it's recommended that you start with just the bar. A typical olympic bar is 45 lbs.

It's always better to start light and focus on form. With a linear progression program like Starting Strength, you will be increasing the weight by 5 to 10 lbs. each workout, which adds up to around 60 to 120 lbs. each month if you are working out three times a week. This is not a long period of time and you will more than likely hit a wall within three or four months (probably much sooner on the workouts you are increasing by 10 lbs. each session).

The first few sessions may feel light, but don't give into the temptation to slide on more plates. This is a very common beginner mistake and will more often than not lead to quick discouragement, poor form, and possible injuries.

I'm not a cutter, I just have cats. :-)

Friend of mine took a pretty decent picture yesterday.

Fantastic job everyone, really inspiring.

Here's my 2013 to 2014. Last year was phenomenal, not really happy with my progress this year. I need to reduce alcohol and kick gluten I think to lose more fat, the days of easy loss are behind me.

Looking good!

I hit that plateau as well, miss those easy losses, hoping strength training will help me cut 5 more percent body fat.

200lbs to 130. lbs I'm now 165ish trying to slim some unfortunate fat to 150.

Here's me when i graduated last month.

I run every other day 6.5 miles and work out casually. (should be more focused on some muscle groups but eh.)

I tell you. Im one of the cursed Ectomorphs. I am always thin and athletic, but never that jacked...or even cut look.

I can run for days, but getting in the gym and lifting heavy is like asking me have a root canal done everyday.

Not only that, I have given it the college try. Ate over 3000 calories a day, lifted 5 times a week. Big compound movements....maybe...MAYBE gained 7 pounds. over 6 months. So, imagine a root canal 5 out of 7 days a week, with little of my beloved cardio, along with more eating than I care to do (because eff, 3000 clean you are eating all the time and with a job is extremely difficult).

So now, I do what I want...Lift maybe...MAYBE three times a week, run for as long and as frequent as I want to eat as much as I can (but not counting calories), and Im having a great time.

So, in a way, my fitness goal is being achieved....Work out to enjoy the process and not for a vain goal. :D

Oh, I know that feeling. :p

Great job though! Looking good - keep it up! :D

Exactly - you do what makes you feel good and what you enjoy doing!

I'm not nearly in fitness model shape yet but I've made a lot of progress.

I got really fat and depressed at the end of a bad marriage. I was probably 275. This is my face from then till now.

My path was that I lost a ton of weight just through diet originally. I went from 275 to 195-200 over a year or so. I wasn't happy with how I looked though. So I decided to join a gym.

This is my gym progress since November. Hard to see a ton of differences here but it's the same outfit.

Here's the (blurry) progress with the same pose.

I'm not at hard body yet but coming from where I was I'm really proud of all the work and dedication I've put in.

That's awesome progress. I'm sure you definitely feel it.

On the left looks almost exactly like I do right now, but a bit less fat... sorry Chitta! :p

Anyway if I could look like THE RIGHT a year from now I'd probably cry. What are you doing? Just asking because your starting body type is very close to mine. Honestly just want to trim fat right now, then start toning up once I get a lot of that off.

I do. I changed my whole life around since the fat pictures.

My goal when I started working out was to be able to do a pull up. I'd never had the upper body strength to do one. I thought it would be impossible.

It amazes me when I grab a bar and lift myself up without much effort now. Like I'm using the force or something.

Me on the right at my heaviest, three years ago at 325. Immediately after that weekend I realized I needed to fix my shit and lose the weight.

Here's me two weeks ago, jumping oven the final obstacle at the PA Spartan Sprint. Still have a ways to go, but I'm still on the right path!

You guys are all doing really well! :)

I'm 5'8" and like 250ish now. It's getting pretty depressing and I realize what I need to change, but I'm having such a hard time nailing down a good food regimen. Any help is greatly appreciated and I'll be keeping this thread around as you guys are becoming an inspiration for me.

Meat based diet with plenty of veggies. Keep your carbs low. Lift weights. Stick to 2250-2500 calories a day. Lower if weight loss stalls. You'll be a different person in a year if you are consistent and dedicated. Good luck! If you need weight lifting advice visit the link in the OP. Weight lifting isn't a necessity but it will help greatly.

This is like the most succinct helpful advice there is! Give it a go, Stormhammer.

super impressive. excellent job, man. inspirational, to be sure.

Damn some impressive transformations in this thread! And some crazy lift numbers too (Brolic!)!

I'm 5 months in a dirty bulk at 220 so no pics from me right now but will post in a few months when I do a cut.

Thanks man! It's been hard but it's so worth it! I pretty much only train to be able to do obstacle course events, they're so much fun. Also did aTough Mudder earlier this year, a Warrior Dash and a Zombie Run in August, and another Tough Mudder in October. :-D

I'm avoiding selfies because the light in here burns, but my stats are as follows:

September last year I started lifting, and weighed in the mid-low 170's.

Bench: 155
Squat: 175
DL: Who the fuck knows

Now: Mid 170's (depending on the day)
Bench: 215 (should be 225, will hit it next month)
Squat: 275x2 (so 1RM ought to be slightly higher)
DL: 300

I have a mountain of progress to make, but I think the whole point is to continue to make progress. I need to work in cardio to drop the additional lbs and keep lifting. Much of my bench gain has been in the last few months since I've focused on it, where the others have been a bit slow and steady.

Edit: Also, my waist is down from 35 to 32, and loose at that. I need to buy new pants.

I have come to the conclusion that I won't be at 7% BF this summer because there is only 5 weeks left and I wan't to have fun and drink. Though I would only need 2 weeks to get my bottom 2 abs full blown. The lighting in the pics don't make my abs look as good but this is the best I can do.

First, really great progress so congrats on that!

Second, as someone doing his first Tough Mudder in September, do you have any feedback on how to best prepare or what level of fitness I should shoot for? I've gotten up to run about six miles at a pretty slow pace and am doing P90X 5-6 days a week, with about 60 days until the race. Not where I want to be yet physically, but any tips are appreciated!
