Unfortunately the lead designer seems to be adamant about the current look and feel of the UI.
I made a thread on their forums that critiqued the issue, and was basically told - "this is just how we want it - you gotta balance 'clutter' with usability... and a players skill in using the UI should be part of the factor of what defines their ability in play".
Which is basically to say, 'tough titties, I like it this way and I'm the lead designer.'
So even a basic usability comment like putting the distance to target under the target display on the left orb would seem to be going against their grain of reducing 'clutter' and 'repetition'.
