Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

Yep, missions are bugged for me ;)

Man the Viper is so fast and snappy anything larger feels like flying a turtle. Tried the Cobra and I was getting half my hull taken out by measly sidewinders for how slowly it turned.

How about the WhartHog Controller? I was considering buying that instead

While the Warthog easily has the best build quality out of any joystick, there are two things you need to keep in mind if you really want it:

1) Programmability with it can be a complete pain in the ass. One common issue is games not supporting the toggles being actual toggles. As in, when you flip a switch up, it stays up. Most games register that as the same key getting held down. You can use their software and work through the issues, but you should expect to have some time just setting up the controls for a while when you get a new game.

2) There is no twist on the stick. You will need pedals in addition to the stick itself so don't forget to factor the cost of those into your purchase.

For me, I got the X55. I've read about complaints people have with the build quality, and it may have just been limited to the early shipments or something. I have one and I really don't have any complaints with it. It's comfortable, lots of buttons, toggles, switches and the changeable spring tension system is really awesome.

If you go with the X52, don't forget to do the magnet mod as it will increase the sensitivity and response of the stick, however it will void your warranty. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfJNiHmEszk

hopefully someone can help me out, i found some coltan floating around, scooped it up thinking I could make a quick buck, but i'm not able to sell it?
it's in my cargo hold but they say "stolen" do i have to find a black market trader to sell them to?

You can only sell it to the black market, correct.

"While the Warthog easily has the best build quality out of any joystick"

Out of any joystick found at local retailers/amazon.

There are higher quality joysticks from much smaller, more boutique (and stupidly expensive) manufacturers.

I'm thinking about getting a joystick for this as well. I'm not really ready to spend 200 bucks on a 52 pro :( Any opinion on the Saitek/mad catz Cyborg Fly 5?

I can't give you an accurate answer based off first hand impressions... but if posts on the Elite Dangerous forum are credible, then the X55 has some build quality issues that aren't as present in the X52 Pro.

Also, the X52 Pro has the advantage of been the Elite Dangerous HOTAS development standard.

So in that sense, it's better.

The X55 appears to have more switches buttons and options, as well as better software programmability. Although I'm only just guessing here.

The build issues only seemed to be present in the early batches. The X55 is a wonderful HOTAS. Add to that being able to change the springs to whatever you're comfortable with.

The amount of buttons is insane on the X55. Everything I need is within my reach. So many hats and switches!! On the throttle unit itself there's a lot of toggles that I've mapped the landing gear and cargo scoop and such.

etc. Mostly made for super crazy rivet counting simulation fans with lots of disposable income and some are also made for aviation training simulation.

As someone who has studied and done aircraft wiring, to be MIL-spec compliant (and raising the price sky high), is totally useless for home entertainment. Military contractors maybe and even then, they're wasting money if its for simulation purpose. But yea i guess we can always find horribly expensive shit around.

To put up an argument for those who spend this amount of money - a good sim environment is still way, way cheaper than the real thing. If you are die hard passionate about flying, dropping $15,000 into a good racing or flight cockpit will let you do things that would cost way more otherwise. How many people get a chance to drive on the nuremberg, for example?

The stuff at SimRoom, for example? Amazing, $20k setups. I'm actually trying to build my own for a fraction of the cost, without the hyper realistic flight equipment - estimating about $1k in parts, but their stuff is amazing regardless.

So why didn't you pledge $2 million for Elite and Star Citizen. After all, a real space ship would cost trillions of dollars. How many people get a chance to fly to Alpha Centauri, for example?

Jokes aside, what I'm saying is that absolute value still matters to many. Something being fifty times as expensive won't mean it would make the game fifty times as fun or immersive. Most people are better of buying a 'cheaper' variant as it'll still provide them a satisfactory experience. Not to mention that $20K is an awful lot of money for many. But I guess that if you have the disposable income, nothing is stopping you from building such awesome things. ;)

I would throw down 10k on something like this when im done with school and have a house in the future and my wife gives the go... ah fuck it, aint happening. But i wish. Warthog hotas in that simulator too :) WHY does he play 3rd person though.

I'm wondering, on a HOTAS, how do you set the reverse trusters? Do you set 0 Speed at the middle of the thruttle or there is a button that toggle reverse?

Elite lets you do either.

Does gunning it in full reverse slow you down faster (when moving forward at high speed) than just setting throttle to zero with FA On? I'm on KB/M right now, so it's hard to test.

Anyone tried FA Off with mouse controls yet? Took me all of about four seconds to end up in a three-way flat spin that I had no hope of getting out of.. hehe. Even if I do wind up going FA Off a lot of the time (once I get my HOTAS), I think it'll still be handy to have a "full stop" button by switching FA On for a few seconds.

I wouldn't imagine it would, as with FA on the "ship computer" is handling the thrust, so it should theoretically be gunning the reverse thrusters to get you to stop ASAP anyway.

Yeah, I think I'll just try it on Wednesday when I get a proper throttle, see if there's any difference. I'll be doing what I've spent most of my time doing.. just buzzing around the outside of the station figuring out how to fly.

Try turning Relative Mouse Control on if you want to fly with FA off.

I don't want to spend too much time learning a control method that I'll never use. My HOTAS will be here on Wednesday, then I have to learn how to fly all over again.. hehe.

I have set it to forward only so that I can have the full range on the throttle, and the center is really 50% speed (highest maneuverability). I have a button assigned that let's you either switch or hold reverse the throttle.

So per Reddit, it's possible to supersample the game. I just put a custom resolution (2560 x 1400) in Nvidia Control Panel for the DK2. I can confirm it works, but there seems to be an eye separation issue when turning your head fast. Helps a lot with text especially and helps a ton on aliasing. Of course, I have to run the game at low settings. At this resolution with the Rift, the 780 Ti gets pushed like crazy.

Anyway, I decided to just go back to 1080p in the Rift with all high settings since you lose a lot of the graphical effects going to low. Along with that, the eye separation issue.

Text is really only an issue for me for the space ports I'm traveling to since you can't really lean towards the distance number. Everything else in the ship that's a part of the UI, you can lean towards to make them clearer.

Unfortunately the lead designer seems to be adamant about the current look and feel of the UI.

I made a thread on their forums that critiqued the issue, and was basically told - "this is just how we want it - you gotta balance 'clutter' with usability... and a players skill in using the UI should be part of the factor of what defines their ability in play".

Which is basically to say, 'tough titties, I like it this way and I'm the lead designer.'

:P

So even a basic usability comment like putting the distance to target under the target display on the left orb would seem to be going against their grain of reducing 'clutter' and 'repetition'.

Ah lol that sucks. Maybe if more people complain, they'll give the option. Shouldn't be too hard.

The current UI as is though, I'm pretty in love with. If anything, I want custom colors for the UI. Tired of orange. Want something like blue or purple.

I'm playing with DK2 and I finally got around to actually trying to make some money to buy a different ship. I earned enough to upgrade to the hauler. Man, this game and VR are just a match made in heaven. The cabin in the hauler is so expansive compared to the sidewinder. I feel like I'm in a yacht or a really expensive RV. I haven't paid much attention to all of the different ships, but I know now that I need to fly every single one of them.

ED is so future-proof. I can see myself playing new expansion packs a decade from now with an 8K rift if they play their cards right. The funny thing is, this normally would not be my type of game at all. I can't stop playing it, though.

Then you're in luck. The ability to change colour is the *only* thing that they were willing to compromise on.

For me, my biggest bug bear was the lack of tracking arrow once targets left your view port (or even just the middle of the screen) - and the guy said that they indeed had the arrow to begin with, but took it away because his team found that it reduced players to seeking arrows all the time. Which isn't an unfair point of view.

But when I asked how he'd be balancing the massive advantage that VR and track ir users would gain from tracking and situational awareness, he was dead silent on the subject matter.

Good thing my DK2 is on the way. :P

It looks awesome enough on a normal monitor. Just imagine how insane a first-person view with a Rift would make it...

Can someone help me? Play button isn't launching the game anymore. I've reinstalled both the game and the launcher/cleared the app data folders. I can't think of anything else.

Edit: So EDLaunch.exe fails to launch the game when I press Play but Elevate.exe will launch the game. The fuck?

Elevate asks for Admin, obviously some sort of permissions issue.

Today is not my day. Was feeling some trading fatigue so I traded my Type 6 in for a Viper at Louis De Lacaille Prospect and now I've realized I can't buy another Type 6 here and the Viper doesn't have enough fuel to get me out of this cluster. Amazing.

Multiple ship owning and being able to transport your smaller ships cant come soon enough. This is a critical feature that should get priority.

edit- AND engine upgrades

Use the distress beacon and an NPC will turn up with fuel.
