Probably because the last Advance Wars game didn't even release in Japan until half a decade later, and then it was a Club Nintendo reward.

Uh, what's the point of the big joystick over the + Control Pad if it's supposed to be for Smash Bros.? That's not gonna help anything at all, since the + Control Pad is only used for taunts.

Well, it's not confirmed yet, but I'd imagine the controls would be customizable to an extent like in Brawl, but I doubt you'd be able to use the + Control Pad for movement. You couldn't map the + Control Pad for movement with a Classic Controller or GameCube Controller in Brawl, either. The only way to use a + Control Pad for movement is if you're using a Wii Remote on its side, since that's your only option in that case. Since the 3DS has the Circle Pad, I'd imagine movement can only be mapped to that.

This make no sense. Smash is one of the only games that don't benefit from a fight pad sequel getup like this, there are no quarter circles or zig zag moves in the game.

Maybe for street fighter.
