Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 12: Gwah, hah. Welcome to the Bowser's game.

None. They haven't really offered up a compelling reason for me to one one yet. They should have just went full Skylanders, forced you to buy figures to play characters and started you off with only Mario and Kirby.

No bad Pop-O-Matic

Keep that as far away from Smash as possible

Yep, Mega Man 2 is a classic, straight up. It's the popular favorite... but it's not actually my favorite, haha. That honor goes to MM 5, because even though it's too easy IMO, it's got the best music and graphics of anything on the NES (including MM 6, even though it came after) and it's got some of my favorite level designs in the series. It just feels really inspired to me, but that's definitely not the popular opinion.

If you enjoyed 2 but aren't sure you're sold on the entire series (which would be understandable), you should definitely at least check out 3 and 5.

And you've probably heard this from other people, but if you also never played the Mega Man X games back in the day... go download and play the original Mega Man X right the hell now. Mega Man fan or not, it's one of very best 2D platformers and most well-designed games of all time. It's just sublime.
I'm sold on the series after playing MM2. The controls are so tight -- my only complaint was sometimes the levels didn't telegraph their hazards well (I.E. dropping to the next screen, I'd land on an unforeseen obstacle). But yeah, I really liked MM2, so I'll definitely keep in mind your additional recommendations: MM3, MM5 and MMX. :-)

sorry this post is so long

But when did Sakurai come right out and say not everyone from Brawl would be back? All I recall him saying is that he theoretically wants to bring everyone back so as not to disappoint anyone, but that they are facing difficulties doing that with certain characters (Ice Climbers?) because of the 3DS's hardware limitations. I don't ever remember him confirming anything about Brawl characters either way.

Here's the article, from June 2013. The relevant quote is:

Sakurai said:
I can answer that: no. We don’t have the time to fully recreate every single character who’s been in Smash Bros at this point.

Adding new characters is not a simple addition – it’s really multiplication. The amount of work, adding a character is multiplied and becomes bigger and bigger as you go. We can’t because of the amount of work it takes. However, I do believe I understand that each character has its own set of fans out there who really like that character.

So we’re not going to cut characters out of the way, we’re going to put in as many characters as we can, we really want to do that, because it’s good for the fans and good for all of us. But in the event that we do have to cut some characters, I’d like to apologise in advance to those fans.

You're right, he didn't explicitly say some Brawl characters were getting cut. And I don't expect anyone to get cut because of technical limitations, not even ICs. However, I get the impression that when he says "We don’t have the time to fully recreate every single character who’s been in Smash Bros," he doesn't just mean there's no time to recreate the Melee clones who were cut from Brawl. I take him to mean that there are some Brawl characters which are low-priority enough that there won't be time to put them in Smash 4. Again, I don't mean to say that Sakurai's definitely going to hack the Brawl roster to pieces, but that it would be prudent to prepare for more cuts than just Pokemon Trainer.

You should trust me instead.

The last two newcomers are Ridley-X and Gay Luigi from Hotel Mario.

Finally, some real diversity in Smash.

How many Amiibos would you guys buy for Smash?

One, maybe two. I'm definitely getting the Kirby one because it's so cute, and I'd consider getting Robin if they make one.

Is the PSP version of Mega Man X a huge downgrade from Mega Man X? I can't say I'm the biggest fan of what I've played of that, though I haven't played the original Mega Man X.

It's not a downgrade at all, actually. Some fans think it is, but I think Maverick Hunter X is great in its own right. The two games play quite differently for being the same core game, though, so if you don't like the PSP version you should still check out the original SNES version and see if it's more your speed.

The SNES version has tighter, pixel-perfect controls and gameplay, whereas the PSP version has some minor gameplay issues such as the camera being zoomed too far in for you to see well enough around you some of the time. The SNES version doesn't have this problem. That said, the PSP version has some really nice remixes of the original music and some cool visual flair, and also what I'd consider pretty good voice acting, especially for Mega Man games.

TL;DR: Both versions are great but they're not pretty different and not really comparable. The original SNES version wins out gameplay-wise, though.

Still pretty ludicrous how many trophies are in there. By my count, over 100 from this pic alone. Can anybody identify, the one between Pete and Sonic, between Charizard and Wiggler, one in front of DK, one inbetween Steel Diver and Moltres or the one behind conductor link and Bulborb
- First 2 you mentioned look like Animal Crossing characters to me. I don't know much about Animal Crossing.
- Third, no clue, but I'm guessing something Pikmin related.
- Fourth, Stalfos.
- Fifth, Spirit Train, possibly Conductor Link and it are a part of the same trophy. EDIT: Are you referring to the white thing behind them?

How many Amiibos would you guys buy for Smash?
Robin, Palutena, and Lucina are all figures I intend to buy. I don't think I'd buy any besides that, though. Unless there was a DLC character/Amiibo that was really to my liking.

Unless the build quality on the Amiibo is really bad, in which case I'd just get one to mess around with.

I really, really hope Famitsu's weekly column covers Mega Man soon. I'm itching to know what his custom specials are.

I was playing through Mega Man 5 on the Wii U Virtual Console yesterday, and it dawned on me that the weird-ass Rush Coil from that game (where Rush's whole body springs up and then you have to jump off of him to get maximum height) could work as a custom up special for Mega Man where it's a little harder/more awkward to use, but gets you more height/recovery distance than the standard Rush Coil if you use it right.

The newcomers Famitsu still has yet to cover at this point are Villager, Mega Man, Greninja, the Mii Fighters, and Pac-Man... so I guess I might have to wait awhile longer yet. :(

You know, I was thinking about Megaman recently and came to the conclusion that it's lame that his standard Up B wasn't Rush Jet, considering how much more awesome it is to ride a fucking hoverboard around than it is to get sprung into the air, especially when Sonic covers that niche just as well.

it's still odd to me that not one third party has an up special that leaves them in a helpless state.
That said, Megaman's up special was pretty good in the demo, meaning that Rush Jet would have to cover a decent amount of ground for me to swap to that.

How many Amiibos would you guys buy for Smash?

Ideally? All of them.
Realistically (because I live with my fiancée and also need room for her stuff, and cost)? Probably Kirby, Mega Man, Sonic, Toon Link, Zelda, and Palutena.

Ah okay, I do remember that now. Yeah, especially after reading that, even though he doesn't confirm anything either way, I think we should be bracing ourselves for a few more cuts than most of us are maybe expecting. I really do think Lucas might be cut in favor of giving his moves to Ness as alts. :( I'd say the same about the Star Fox crew, but Falco's too iconic to cut and Wolf is just (just) different enough from Fox and Falco in terms of his normals and such that turning his specials into alts wouldn't quite work IMO.

You know, I was thinking about Megaman recently and came to the conclusion that it's lame that his standard Up B wasn't Rush Jet, considering how much more awesome it is to ride a fucking hoverboard around than it is to get sprung into the air, especially when Sonic covers that niche just as well.

Totally agree. Before Mega Man was revealed for Smash, I'd always imagined his recovery as being the Rush Jet too. Rush Coil is fine, yeah, but as you said, it's too similar to Sonic's recovery. :/

Basically all this says is that Sakurai knows he has a limited amount of time and will try to jam in as many characters as he can but newcomers take a lot more time to implement then veterans and that certain veterans are much lower priority then others. This probably explains why characters like Wolf, Jigglypuff, and Toon Link were relegated to post SSE in Brawl, they were probably lower priority to implement and as such were finished after a point where the majority of SSE was finalized.

Obviously who Sakurai feels is higher or lower priority is up to speculation, but we can make some obvious guesses, clones that were cut from Melee (Dr Mario, Pichu, Roy, Young Link) are probably the lowest priority. I'd imagine Squirtle and Ivysaur are either at the same level since they got rid of the switching move sets in battle and made Charizard stand alone. After that it's speculation though it would seem characters like Lucas and Wolf are probably lower on the priority list when compared to say characters like Wario or Meta Knight.

Let's try to survive Weekend GAF.

1. Favorite characters you don't find fun to play as:
2. Favorite playstyles on characters you just find "meh":
3. Characters you already love with playstyles you enjoy:
4. Characters you grew to love in general because of their Smash inclusion:

1. Mario, Yoshi, Samus, Link, Wario, Olimar, Sonic
2. Meta Knight, Ice Climbers, Mr. Game & Watch, Falco, Wolf, Marth (sorry, they do nothing for me)
3. Peach, Donkey Kong, Bowser, King Dedede, Pikachu, Jigglypuff
4.. Sheik, Zelda, Captain Falcon, Kirby, Lucas, Diddy Kong, Pit, Ike, Zero Suit Samus (Many of these characters weren't on my immediate radar. Before Melee, I didn't know Zelda/Sheik was someone to root for and not just a cardboard cutout to save. Before Smash 64, Kirby was just a blip on my radar. I find Pit a great character now. And I never dreamed ZSS could happen since Zero Mission.)

1. Wario, Pikachu, ROB.
2. Dr. Mario (his inclusion in Melee was a dumb pick/decision IMO, but I do prefer using him to regular Mario), and Fox/Falco in Melee (I don't really care for them in any of the other games and I have no affinity for the Star Fox series at all and as characters they're a little too furry for my tastes).
3. Toon/Young Link, Ike, Sonic.
4. Marth, Roy, Ness, Game and Watch.

- First 2 you mentioned look like Animal Crossing characters to me. I don't know much about Animal Crossing.
- Third, no clue, but I'm guessing something Pikmin related.

I was suspecting that for the 4th but couldn't tell.
I just realized that the white part I was trying to refer to back there is actually steam from the train (which is a part of the conductor link trophy). There's actually a trophy behind this (indicated by a small patch of yellow) but I don't think you can identify it since its mostly hidden.

You must be younger than I thought you were if you never played the Mega Man games...dang.

3 is my personal favorite. 2 is where they really nailed down the main ideas for the series, 3 and beyond are just finessing the formula. Fun fun stuff. Play them all.

And X is in a league of its own. You've got a Wii U, don't you? Get on that.

That said, Megaman's up special was pretty good in the demo, meaning that Rush Jet would have to cover a decent amount of ground for me to swap to that.

Initial Up B rockets you off the ground. Hold B to float a la Peach, or tilt a direction to float that way. Smash the direction to boost in that direction. If boost is used, Megaman falls prone as Rush teleports out after the dash.

Done.

Based upon how most characters alt specials are I imagine Mega Man's will be something like

B. Metal Blade
B2. Flaming Metal Blade (flies slower does more damage)
B3. Mini Metal Blade (flies faster deals less damage

B>. Crash Bomber
B>2. Big Explosion Crash Bomber (has a longer timer, has a bigger blast radius to hit multiple targets)
B>3. Quick Crash Bomber (shorter timer, smaller blast radius, deals less damage)

B^. Rush Coil
B^2. Jump Rush Coil (Rush himself jumps up with you, less range but you can do ground attacks on it)
B^3. Super Rush Coil (Mega Man blasts off Rush damaging anyone he touches, falls prone)

BV. Leaf Shield
BV2. Speed Leaf Shield (shoots faster, absorbs less damage before breaking)
BV3. Super Leaf Shield (shoots slower, absorbs more damage)

Expect that general concept to be true for most characters alternate specials

I wouldn't be surprised if they just went with different robot master weapons for those. E.g. instead of the Metal Blade, he could get the Shadow Blade and the Gyro Blade, instead of the Leaf Shield he could get Skull Barrier, Star Shield, etc., and for the Crash Bomber there's the Drill Bomb or the Hyper Bomb as possibilites.

I'm mid-20s, so Mega Man games were around when I was a kid, but I just didn't play them. :-)

Absolutely.

One of the worst things about a potential Lucas cut would mean no Lucas amiibo. ;_;

Yep! I'd also buy Ness, Shulk if he's in, Samus (even though I suck with her in Smash, Metroid is my second favorite Nintendo franchise after Mother), Link, and Luigi probably. If the Duck Hunt Dog is in I may buy it to do horrible experiments on like Sid from Toy Story.

I bet they went for Rush Coil over Rush Jet because Rush Coil allows Sakurai to spawn a Rush standing on all fours, which naturally lends itself better to amusing pictures!

You and hawthornekitty are the only users whose ages I'm ever curious about.
You can probably guess why.
Erm, why? That sounds kind of creepy, without elaboration!

I really don't get why some of you are hyperventilating about us losing more characters then we're expecting when there is literally no reason to assume that at all. The fact that characters like Toon Link and Lucina have already been confirmed really should have put those fears at ease.

Oh, we're talking about Megaman must play games? Ahem:

Classic series: 2, 3, 5 (I'll just piggyback Ash on this one, haven't played it myself), 8, 9, 10, Megaman & Bass (if you're lucky enough to get a hold of the SFC version)
X series: 1 (forget being a must for someone getting into Megaman games, this is like required reading for Game Appreciation 101), 2, 3, 4
Zero series: All of them, but I wouldn't be surprised if 1 was too different or 4 was too watered down for you. 2 & 3 are X1 - X4 tier games though.
Battle Network series: 2, 3 & 6
Legends series: 1, 2 and Misadventures of Tron Bonne

Everything else, catch a let's play before deciding on playing it.

For me it's basically that every leak that comes out says that Lucas is cut, including the two major leaks that everyone says have weight (Gematsu, Smashboards).

Boots and avatar quoting. Makes me assume you guys are probably teens-mid twenties. Though the thought of a 40 or 50-something year old with waifus is fairly amusing.

Are you a reformed Sega kid? We can never be friends. Old wounds never heal. /consolewars
No, I was always a Nintendo kid. (My console war was against Sony and the PSX... If I could go back and tell fifth-grade me my most-played console last gen would be the PS3, it'd blow his mind!)

I just didn't play Mega Man. My first console was a Super NES. I got it the year the N64 came out. I then got an N64 the next year, and a Game Boy Color the year after that. So my first year with the SNES was all about Super Mario All-Stars + World, the Donkey Kong Country trilogy, etc. Then on N64, I went straight into MK64, SM64, Diddy Kong Racing, etc.

Now we have Virtual Consoles, and I'm much more knowledgeable about games than before. So every now and then I get around to one of the classics. Downloading MM2 on the 3DS last year is one example. :-)

I normally just assume mostly everybody on GAF is around the same early 20's age bracket I'm in and get irrationally weirded out when I find out they're significantly younger/older.

That's terrible.

No bad Pop-O-Matic

Keep that as far away from Smash as possible

Pop-o-Matic just wants to watch the world burn

Hey, I'm just calling it how I see it. If they want amiibo to succeed, they need a compelling, easy to understand reason for people who own the games to buy them. I mean, you can call what Skylanders and Disney Infinity exploitative (and it is), but it's very easy to understand and gives people a good reason to buy the figures. Conversely, I don't think many people are going to be able wrap their heads around the whole "learning AI/virtual pet" angle, and those that do might not see them are all necessary since their friends, regular AI and online play probably already provide ample enough variety in terms of opponents. Ultimately, there's a good chance that the majority of Smash players will see amiibo as necessary for a fulfilling Smash experience, which, as the flagship game for the platform, is probably something that Nintendo doesn't want to happen.

Didn't people deduce a couple weeks ago that's literally the same Marth model shown off at E3 with a different camera and light?
Pretty much, but looking at close ups in the better light and angles, it still doesn't look that great to me... it's odd because Zelda, Pit and co look fine (to me, of course) :o

For me it's basically that every leak that comes out says that Lucas is cut, including the two major leaks that everyone says have weight (Gematsu, Smashboards).

I think Lucas is probably the most likely character after Ivysaur, Squirtle, and Snake to be cut because he's from a very niche series, his game in particular never officially left Japan, there isn't very much visually distinct about him compared to Ness and he's by far the least visually distinct "clone".

Then again everyone and the mother would be expecting Toon Link to be cut had he not been revealed last year. Honestly with Lucina being confirmed I'm really getting the feeling we won't see any cuts outside of Snake for "reasons" we may never find out, and Ivysaur & Squirtle due to the removal of transformations.

I think everyone does that with whatever forum they go on. Just assumes everyone on it is the same age as them, then get weirded out when they're not.

Disney Infinity and Skylanders are, essentially, new IPs. They're trying to cash in on kids. Smash is different. Smash has people who already love the games. If Ninty got greedy, those people might not buy the games. But, if they just make Amiibos a cool additional feature, and make the toys neat enough merchandise, they'll be able to still sell the game to those people, probably sell them some Amiibos, and be able to cash in on the success of other figure games by having figures for kids to buy.

I think Lucas is probably the most likely character after Ivysaur, Squirtle, and Snake to be cut because he's from a very niche series, his game in particular never officially left Japan, there isn't very much visually distinct about him compared to Ness and he's by far the least visually distinct "clone".

That'd be Wolf. Doesn't share one damn animation with Fox/Falco despite being a clone of them. No idea why Sakurai didn't just recycle animations with him, but whatever, it's cool, dude's a blast to play as.

Hysteria and paranoia is infectious in close quarters.

Alright, your story checks out. At ease soldier.

The only Mega Man game I haven't finished (talking mainline platformer style Mega Man games here, including the X, Zero, and ZX series) is Mega Man 8. For some reason I just can't stand the combination of the art style and sound effects, it like...makes me angry.

To me, age/gender/race/etc has no place here (or anywhere, really, but that's another topic). Bottom line is, we're all gamers. We're all children at heart. :-)
