Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

How does this look so good and so huge when it only make like 2.5 million on the kickstarter? It's crazy. I'm so psyched for this.

Yeah, I wish half of SC's funding went to ED instead. I say that as a backer of both. Oh well, hopefully Frontier make bank off of the paint jobs and other cosmetic stuff in their store.

There is a lot more proceedural content in Elite than SC, but the art style that Braben's pulled off is one of the most internally consistent, relatively minimal and yet gorgeous implementations in the genre. It's beautiful in motion.

Playing this with a joystick is a whole new level of enjoyment - I love it. I hope I'll not be too tempted to jump on a hotas in the near future :D

So I have gotten a weird crash a couple of times while going through the first scenario. I've been trying to get my controls and everything else set up and a few times my entire screen just turns pink and I can't do anything about it. It results in me having to hard reboot. I don't know if it happens when playing outside of the scenarios because I have yet to try. Anyone have any ideas?

I was wondering, were can i find the orbis space station, and second are there gonna be more different space stations in the final version? or only the pyramid ones and the orbis.

anybody with a thrustmaster hotas x stick mind sharing the mappings you use on the stick and throttle?

1 : Fire Primary
2 : Secondary Fire
3 : Target SubSystem
4 : Select Target in Front
5 : Boost
6 : Change Fire Group
7 : Heat Sink Launcher
8 : UI
9 : Flight Assist OFF
10 : FrameShift Drive/Hyperdrive
11 : Close Hardpoints
12 : Silent Mode

Hat : Vertical/Horizontal Thrusters
Paddle : Previous/Next Target

This is what I'm using right now though I want to change the paddle and maybe the FrameShift as I don't need it on the HOTAS itself.

They have a plan and know what they are doing. Not like that other space sim.

Star Citizen is gonna do fine, but it's just waaaaaaaay overhyped and people seem to think they'll completely redefine video games or something.
Like, people really think the game won't have lag or anything like that or completely misunderstand how their universe is gonna work. Like one guy was all "you will see 1000 people walk around in a space station!"

We will see!

In other news: why is the flight AI so bad at entering or exiting stations? :lol

Frontier had a huge advantage in actually existing over the last few years. Braben has been quietly brainstorming a new Elite for ages and it really shows in how quickly they produced high-quality design overviews for various game mechanics. They also had their own in-house engine which was developed with a game like Elite in mind.

On the other hand, Roberts had to piece together a massive team from practically nothing, building a game from prototype mockups which were apparently unsuitable for further development using a licensed engine that requires significant upgrades before it can handle a space sim. The slower start is understandable but I'm concerned by the lack of public-facing design documents. It seems like they still don't have a handle on what the game should be.

Got rammed by a federal fighter and lost my viper, then there was no option to buy it back after. :/ At least it's pretty cheap.

And how the hell do I beat the combat scenario where you have to take out three fighers without being detected by the cobra? As soon as I take out one of the fighters the cobra knows where I am even if I'm running silent.

Is that who I keep hearing blow up around me when I'm docked? I was hoping it was players, I'm all "L2P nub".. lol. I did see a ship bouncing off the exit last night like a trampoline. I had to stop until he bounced clear of the exit so I could boost through before he got back into my way.

I did see some other ships calmly stopped directly in front of the exit, too, but I'm pretty sure those were players. Obviously trying to block as much of it as they could (with a Sidewinder, whatever). AI Type 9 didn't give a fuck and drove right through them, I don't think that's what they had in mind when they decided to troll the dock like that.

Still getting a handle on my HOTAS-X (finally got it last night) and figuring out where I want the buttons to go. Really liking it, though, much better control than KBM or gamepad.

Whelp finally playing and it's a blast. It's so odd playing it though - it's do familiar (played Elite, Elite 2 and Frontier way back in the day) yet such a jump.

And still the best combat radar ever I note.

On game pad waiting for Joystick in the post.

Only real gripe so far is the auto dock : I'd swear it's programmed deliberately to make you shit yourself while it's in operation.

Onwards to my first Cobra - just like old times.

What do you use for the systems then if the hat button is for thrusters? Directional arrows on keyboard?

So at what point do you NOT get a fine for shooting at someone who shot at you first? Or are you just supposed to run away if they've got a clean record? Despite the fact that they're, you know... shooting at you for no reason. I'd like to be able to do something when some jackhole takes a potshot at me.

Doh, just lost a Type-6 with 600,000 credits worth of cargo due to playing "drop out of SC at stupidly close distances" roulette.

Won't make that mistake again, I've had a few 1-2km close calls before than should have warned me, but this time I dropped out of SC right into pain and suffering.

Will go for safe distances from now on.

I hope the single player campaign on this is pretty robust. I am more interested in playing this for the SP.

I hope its like the old space combat sims of the heyday of this genre.

There won't be a single player campaign. You can play the game single player without (directly) interacting with other players, but if you're expecting a campaign with cutscenes and written story missions and what not, you might as well bail out now.

DAMN! Thanks for the heads up. I heard there was single player. I guess I assumed too much.

Oh well ........ I still might give this a shot if it provides a fun SP experience along with the multiplayer. I am really desperate to play a good space combat sim.

I'd prefer a SP focused one, but I could settle for a MP one too, I suppose.

Adding to this, Star Citizen is the game he's waiting for.

Star Citizen is going to have a meaty, story-driven, single player campaign with some of the most advanced 3D Scan tech for NPCs. Ever played wing commander? Star Citizen is the spiritual successor.

There's no campaign, really. Get rich?

That's all the old offline Elite games ever were though, right?

I agree that it's a less appealing single player structure than Star Citizen either way, but I think some people could get solo enjoyment out of this.

Well Elite is pretty much an MMO but without the typical MMO gameplay, right? It's one big universe but you can play it in a more single player fashion. Or am I wrong?

In many ways Elite is mainly SP - but true sandbox not story driven. You can take missions, trade, pirate, explore, bounty hunt, etc. but it's all off your own back with no narrative driving you on. You don't have to bother with others if you don't want to really.

If you want a real story experience then Star Citizen might be a better fit.

Assuming they all deliver I plan on getting SC and No Man's Sky in addition to Elite (which I've already bought into).

EDIT : I should note there is one underlying mission in Elite, to gain the official status of Elite in the game (at least I presume this remains the case; I bought the thing without even checking!)

Has there been any comment on whether there will be a completely offline mode in the final game? I still play the Frontier games to this day, and it would be a shame if ED's life was tied to that of its servers.

In First Encounter there was a very loose sort of narrative via some of the missions you could pick up I'd think they'd do the same here. But yes there's no real in your face traditional story line..

Well in a way in make sense since the player character isn't a hero or super powered plot protected person, he's just one dude/tte in the billion/trillion of people. But ya, Star Citizen is better if you want a more Classic Storyline Based Single Player.

There is nothing wrong with either format, they only favorise different type of persons.

Edit : Pro Tip guys, change the key for the Jettison All Cargo, I pressed it in error and lost all of it... on a Lakon Type 6. You can do combination keys (like Alt + P) so you never press it again in error.

This game is amazing, bought the beta and gifted one to a friend, awesome quality... Some bugs with the turret system screwing up weapon groups but i'm really hooked, it's literally a week i'm spending my gaming time only on elite.

A question... yesterday i tried making a private group play with my friend, we were both at azeban but can't see each other, is there something i'm missing or is the group play still not implemented properly?

Also can't wait for No Man's Sky...

I spent some time configuring my Logitech extreme pro 3d flightstick and g13 to work with this yesterday amd I'm glad I did. Feels so much more natural with a flightstick.

I played the original on the c64 back in the day and I have to say this new version is evoking the feels in exactly the same way it did back then. All I'm doing is the same trade run over and over again but it's amazing. Hyperspace effects are stellar, the super cruise once I figured it out even feels "space epic"

Couple of questions.

I'm getting ready to buy a hauler. WIll that cause me to lose my sidewinder? Can I move equipment from one to the other? Is there anyway to turn off the cockpit for screenshots?

While I can dock with no issues I feel a docking computer is essential for that classic Elite/2001 blue danube experience.

Yeah forgot that one - it was just some spaced out missions to do with Thargoids (spelling?) or am I getting mixed up?

Guys, would love a bit of help if possible?

It's not often I regret getting rid of my PC, but I certainly do at the moment. I've been watching some twitch streams of this, and it's blowing my mind. The original Elite was (and is) one of my favourite games, I sunk ridiculous hours into it as a kid. Dangerous just looks like more of the same but stupidly pretty and stupidly huge.

If I were single and had no job, I'd be out tomorrow to build a new PC, buy a HOTAS, and an Oculus DK2. I'd probably be found in a few weeks dead of starvation in front of the computer.

That said, I have a Retina Macbook Pro from last year, with a quad core, plenty of RAM and a GT 650M. I could run Win 7 in Bootcamp which should get the game running (any idea how well?), then is there any reason I couldn't bluetooth pair a dualshock 4 for a controller (it works in OSX with Steam etc) and hdmi to the TV for a big screen experience?

There were a small series of missions that involved the disappearance of the pilot Mic Turner. You were given a unique ship when the mission chain started, and you had to visit both Pleione in the Pleiades Cluster and eventually the Polaris system.

A Thargoid Shuttle in Polaris then transports you to the distant Miacke system where the Thargoid homeworld is located. They hand you a Thargoid warship for completing a mission to steal a new version of the mycoid that caused them to end the Human-Thargoid war the first time around. Newspaper articles after this mission chain show that the Thargoids eventually recontact humanity peacefully.

Ah that's it! So long since I played it.

Would actually be nice to have a number of somewhat deeper missions so long as they were optional and not an overarching plot (which I think would go counter to the whole vibe of Elite).

But a few multi step faction missions would be cool if handled right.

I quite liked the FFE missions because they took you well outside of civilized space (Pleione was in grid 32,32 and Polaris was 0,76, where most human settlement stopped around +-15,+-15 or so). It was essentially a primer on how to explore without needing to dock up for fuel.

That said, the unique ship you got had a monstrous hyperdrive (Class 4 Military?).
