Xbox One- what would it take to get YOU to buy one ?

Maybe near the end of the gen when it's $199 and has had a redesign. PS4, Wii U, 3DS, VIta and a huuuge backlog of PC/Steam, PS3, and 360 games makes it smart to wait. It's not about whether the library is good enough or not, there is great games on every platform. It's about time. I game on too many platforms as it is.

LOL. Right, monthly updates is the reason why your friend is going to be an early adopter and pick up a console 9 months into a console lifespan. This is almost as believable as someone getting a PS4 over an X1 because there is two USB ports in the front of the console instead of just on the rear or the side.

I was trying to highlight how daft the post I was replying to sounded in a real world situation. But never mind.

I owned both the PS3 and the 360 last gen. So far I've enjoyed the muscle MS has put behind their consoles (which Sony just isn't capable of doing since they're not a software company) and how they've evolved into an entirely different animal by the time the next iteration is released. I do more than just game, and the Xbox One does gaming well.

I'm going to end up getting the PS4, but to think that the difference in graphical performance is so large and obvious that it negates Microsoft's advantages in the console space reeks of favoritism and an irrational disliking of a consumer product.

I know opinions, opinions, opinions and all that, but saying the Xbox One is clearly and most definitely the inferior product between the two, is a bit hyperbolic.

When you say "mostly" I guess you mean Ryse & Dead Rising 3...two games.

Obviously the meaning of the word "most" has a different definition in NZ from here in the UK.

Ok maybe "most" wasn't the best choice of words, but I'd be surprised if more games weren't announced for PC as the sales stagnation of the Xbox One continues.

No they are not. Full HD is important.

Some don't mind the less sharp / more blur image quality, but for a games console its more important than side fluff. And apps / non game stuff is side fluff.

I can only speak for my opinion being UK, HDMI in when I have Sky + is just a complete waste. If I want a fluffy app device I will use an Ipad...

I'm assuming you actually meant "Full 1080p is important" since technically all the games are still in HD.

Well, that's not an opinion when they're both videogame consoles first and foremost, and Xbox One is an inferior product when it comes to that because the majority of games are multiplatform, which run/look worse on Xbox One. If I cared about media playback first, I wouldn't have a PS4 or XB1 for that.

I'm assuming you actually meant "Full 1080p is important" since technically all the games are still in HD.

Full HD normally refers to 1080p.

Games that interest me, really.

I'm not a fan of shooting games (due to various circumstances), and it seems all the good exclusives have some sort of shooting mechanic.

A couple good RPGs, a couple good adventure games with the promise of more and I'm in.

Really if you're not into shooters, any xbox is going to have limited appeal for you. If it wasn't my favorite category I wouldn't own one.

Really, the subscriptions of two consoles is what gets me. It's not even THAT much money, but it's just annoying.

The two main factors are:

- 2 subscriptions
- Having a friend network that share both consoles

These are the biggest detriments. Most people are 1 console people and get what their friends are going to play with them.

I'm not sure why some feel buying a XO is a life defining decision. It isn't - the console is (in my money) £350, which isn't a big investment.

I own one along with my PC, PS4 and Wii U and have zero regrets. Getting a bit tired with the hyperbolic attitude of some treating the XO as the leaper of videogames.

Exactly. Great games exist on all three consoles and PC. Can't imagine not being able to play everything. When did the purchase of a piece of electronics become so emotional and self-defining anyways? Its just video games. Supposed to be fun.

Saying that Sony isn't capable of putting muscle behind their consoles because they aren't a software company (WTF does this even mean?) is equally hyperbolic.

I know, that's why I think it will be tough for me to invest with Microsoft this time.

I did buy a 360 and enjoyed the hell out of the 30 or so games I bought for it. Would never have enjoyed games like Tales of Vesperia and Lost Odyssey if I didn't buy one, two of my favourite games last gen.

I'm hoping for more branching out with the X1.

Can't really see myself getting one. My interests are largely in Japanese games so that's Nintendo and Sony. Can't think of any first party games other than Viva Pinata that had really interested me either.

I've already replied earlier, but seeing Deathrow mentioned made me think of something else Microsoft could do to get me to buy. If they came out with good reviewed versions of the following games along with their currently announced exclusives, I'd buy a Kinectless XB1 for $349.
  • Deathrow
  • Crimson Skies
  • Halo Wars
  • Mech Assault
Another caveat is that these games would have to have good single player content since I'd still be unlikely to pay for an Xbox Gold subscription since I am already paying for PSN+ for my PS4.

Unfortunately it'd be years before Microsoft could amass a big enough exclusive library to make me pick up an XB1 as a secondary console. However, by that time I expect VR to be hitting its stride, and I'd rather put money I'd spend on an XB1 towards getting a VR capable computer and an Oculas Rift instead.

I have one but its just sitting there collecting dust. All of my console multiplats have been on PS4 and the only game I still play on XB1 is KI. They need to drop something exclusive and great asap.

Most people don't have time to play that many games. So it becomes a "why would I spend money for something I don't have time for?" scenario.

It's not a "life-defining" decision, it's just not worth it for all but the most ardent gaming fans.

A first party studio that mirrors Naughty Dog in constant quality of games.

Good diversity in game selection with first party studios similar to what Sony has to offer.

I want to know games will be coming out near the end of the generation, not hope and pray something comes out like the last few years on the 360.

1. $299
2. Smaller redeisgn
3. Driveless SKU

Then again, I can see the One being like ps3 for me last gen. Always wanted to pick it up by by time it became decently affordable it was already long in the tooth and the 360 was offering same if not better experience.

Obviously opinions ahead but I see next to no value in a Wii U. It doesn't just have slightly worse multiplats, it has next to no multiplats. None of the exclusives really interest me beyond a passing glance. The game pad is kinda cool but useless if I have no games to play on it.

So many people rag on the X1 having slightly worse multiplats yet so many defend the Wii U with its apparent lack of any multiplats.

True, whether one values (or not) the entire Wii and Wii U library and its range of exclusives is highly subjective. For me, the XB1 exists in a space where it can't compete with PS4 in terms of multi-plats, and can't compete with either PS4 or Wii U in terms of exclusives. It's also competing with PC, and arguably losing in at least one of those areas there. The Wii U is riding on the insane software output of Nintendo, as well as being backwards compatible with a console that I'm sure many people (myself included) skipped for various reasons. For me, PC and (to a lesser extent) PS4 will be the go-to platforms for multi-plats, whereas Wii U will be likewise for crazy exclusives. Therein lies very little perceived value of XB1's offerings. MS needs more exclusives.

Yeah, that too. I can't afford more and more subscription services on top of the ones I already pay for like with Netflix etc. It may be "small" but it adds up fast!

Nothing. I swore I was done with them after the DRM fiasco and I meant it. I will not support the X1 unless it is sold to another company. Most people swore them off but after a faulty Xbox, multiple faulty Xbox 360's and most of all the drm fiasco I do not want one and quite honestly I hope the system is a failure.

Like most have said, games that really interest me. In addition, my gaming budget for the next year and a half has been exhausted so I will probably pick one up in a year or two.

This is what's going to hamstring the Xbox this whole generation. It's no longer a good case for a secondary console with the LIVE requirement.

With the PS4 being the majority's primary, PS+ will be a great factor to stop Xbox pickups, especially looking at the exodus of 360 users to playstation.

Saying that Sony isn't capable of putting muscle behind their consoles because they aren't a software company (WTF does this even mean?) is equally hyperbolic.

Yeah, but if I said I wouldn't buy a PS4 because they're not at consistent as the Xbox One, I'd consider myself hyperbolic.

The power differences between consoles and the OS differences between consoles are enough to show favoritism but not enough of a reason to stop a consumer from buying either one, inmho.

I understand gamers who wouldn't buy an Xbox One because they lost trust with the brand (due to DRM), but all the other reasons on this thread seem rather petty.

I understand not forcing someone into making a silly financially decision by making them buy both consoles, but if you could afford to own both, and have plenty of time to play both, I'd find it hard to believe that fun couldn't be had with both systems.

This outlook is silly.

Competition is good for everyone.

You think Sony wouldn't rake you over the coals if they were the only game in town?

Sony has handhelds with massive libraries of great games I can Xplay cross system along with exclusives that appeal to me more ( Bloodbourne ).

Unfortunately XB1 doesn't have much going on that I am interested in. A good exclusive would go a long way for me but I haven't been excited about XB1 yet.

Probably something like $299 with half dozen first party exclusives that I really want but will never come to PC.

Rare IP would be the quickest way to my wallet, give me a new Perfect Dark, Conker or Banjo. One of those games alone (if done well) could sway me to buy the console.

A complete U-turn, involving Microsoft refocusing its resources away from securing exclusive dudebro(Yes, I'm going to use that term) 3rd party content, to developing their own original, non-FPS IPs through their own 1st party developers. Preferably this would mainly be platformers, RPGs, and more experimental titles, with at least 4-5 big games being released every year.

In other words: A freaking miracle. I just have no interest at all in their vision for gaming, nor do I care for most of the "innovations" they have brought to consoles(Except for a digital marketplace and built-in storage, but I would argue those were coming no matter what).

I see it as a machine for shooters and serious racers, and I'm not really interested in that.

So I need Rare coming back to life like they were doing on the n64, GameCube and early days of 360. Would love to see more of jet force Gemini, Kameo, banjo and Kazooie ( no nuts and bolts), etc.

No paywall for online multiplayer, would also be good.

Truth. And as an XB1 owner, I'll tell ya an underdog and motivated MS has been pretty damn cool. My XB1 has evolved quite a bit since purchase and I don't think its close to done yet. But yea, this guy you reply to should keep hoping the only real competitor to the console he's a legionnaire for goes out of business, because Sony has such a stellar track record of looking out for the customer, lol.

It's time for him to move past that cutesy but misleading sony sharing video from last year.

Offerings that aren't games that I played years ago (MCC) or "monkey cheese random" inspired trash (SSO) or having absolutely no chance of ever coming out on the PC.

So realistically speaking around 2018 which would be about the time the new consoles should be talked about.

Way smaller form factor with integrated PSU
Xbone with Kinect and PSU is just way too much to fit discretely into my TV TV TV setup.

Even then, it would still require a must-have exclusive and SSO is not it. Last time I bought a console for a game was GC with RE4. It was cheap enough at that point in it life to justify.

Microsoft can only compete and win on exclusives and publisher deals if they choose to burn the cash to do so. I can see them selling the division.

You think Sony wouldn't rake you over the coals if they were the only game in town?

How and why? If Sony would pull out some arrogant shit, people wouldn't buy it just like they're not buying Xdone. It's that simple. I have a good PC for gaming, I'd have no regrets switching to PC only if I wouldn't get enough value from console gaming.

I don't get this fixation with games having no chance of showing up on pc being a requirement. People do choose to play where their friends are, even if its not on pc...

If they did, that would be quite foolish. When a company abuses a monopoly, their customers will go elsewhere. If there is no "elsewhere", it just takes someone to see the opportunity and enter the market to create it.

Competition in the console space just means that I have to buy more than one >300 USD box every five years to play all the games I want to play, how is that in my interest?

The XB1 is going to need something beyond Gears and Halo to entice me. MS no longer has the advantage of having better multi-plats, and I really don't feel like locking myself into two different ecosystems (PS+ and XBL), especially when both share 90% of the same stuff.

Some nice single player exclusives would do the trick. Quantum Break is a start. Not really feeling Sunset Overdrive, though.

The point is that a lack of competition is bad for gamers as it will lead to a lack of innovation and increased prices.

Japanese-developed software, Rare-developed software that's not focused around Kinect, $300 retail price, and a sleeker exterior design.

I'm also not touching a PS4 until there's more Japanese games.

I don't think I'll ever get one. I talked a lot of shit around E3 time last year. I don't think it'd sit right with me to pick one up after all that.

However..a $300 (hell, even $350) price tag would definitely make me rethink my moral standing.

There's no one upcoming Xbox One exclusive that makes me want to rush out and buy the system. I'm definitely interested in a number of them, but not enough to warrant the cost of investing in another console. I think after a few years once the exclusives pile up and the price of the One is around $199 I’ll grab the system and play through the back catalogue of SO, QB, GeOW4, MCC, Halo 5, Sclaebound etc.

The only other thing I can think of that would 'force' me to buy the system earlier than that is if they bought a big 3rd party exclusive like Fallout 4, ME4 or FFXV. But the likelihood of that happening at this point seems slim at best.

true1.jpg

It still hurts.

In serious, it's a bit harder this gen because I don't want to pay 2 subscriptions for online play. That said, Japanese exclusives usually get me. Not a big fan of Platinum Games though, so I'm passing for now.

The point is that a lack of competition is bad for gamers as it will lead to a lack of innovation and increased prices.

In reality, the presence of competition in the console space has led to a tripling of of the price of entry for someone who wants to have the ability to play all the games they think are interesting. Do you really think it would be worse?

Besides, console would still need to compete with PC and smartphones.
