When I see that his last tweet was a happy birthday wish for his daughter, and that his last instagram photo was of him holding her as a child...I can't help but wonder how someone so loving and so well loved could do this without even leaving a note. I hope they find one, but it wasn't part of the sherrif's office's report..

It's depression. I've never personally dealt with it, but from my understanding it is a neurochemical issue that causes people to be in extreme sad states. Basically he would feel incredibly shitty all the time. It wasn't like he willingly and rationally chose to do this, depression did it to him and he shouldn't be to blame.

Fuck.

This was completely out of the blue. :(

He hadn't done many memorable things lately, but he had sooo many good roles in the '80s and '90s.

That's a defense mechanism. I was like that through my childhood and teens years and I still kind of do this. Been diagnosed with depression my whole life.

Yep, I know this all too well. I have a great sense of humor when I'm around people but I have been dealing with depression for the past 10 years or so. And I really enjoyed some of his work so this hit me doubly hard..

Imagine having a mental illness that puts you in a profound state of sadness and hopelessness for years at a time. Clinical depression is a deadly disease with a very high mortality rate.

The news struck me really hard. He was one of my favorite comedians.

Sincerest condolences to his family and friends, it's a huge loss.

Causes are reported to be asphyxiation in an apparent suicide from what I read on the daily beast.

I know, the comment was meant in a more general way. When Harold Ramis died it truly hit me with a baseball bat in the head.

The day people like Christopher Lloyd or further away, Jim Carrey, pass away, I'm going to be even more devastated.

The mortality rate is extremely hard to quantify, but, sadly, the reason it's higher than it needs to be is that about half of those that suffer from severe depression reach out for help and even less than half of those people get the right treatment according to APA guidelines.

The social stigma is deep.

Girlfriend finished her psych rotation a few months ago, and she recounted one discharged patient who was perfectly fine really concerned about who he'd be perceived. He literally asked, "What should I tell my parents and co-workers?"

Sadly, according to staff, this isn't uncommon.
