Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 12: Gwah, hah. Welcome to the Bowser's game.

Mii Fighters (depending on how many options there are, I'm pretty sure you could make a buff or manly looking Mii. Time will tell.)

And albeit I don't know how my work schedule will be around the time of their release, I'm in for both the Super Bash Sisters and Studly Smash Men tournaments! Gotta kick ass with both feminine and masculine sides!

I'm just gauging interest, I'm not gonna do something silly like build a bracket and set a date before the game's even out. I think a bunch of themed tournaments could be a fun way to mix it up and keep some interest after release.
Yeah, I really want to make a tournament myself, but I'm waiting for the game to come out to see how the online works or if there's a decent spectator mode. If possible, I'd love to a GAF tourney with an actual prize involved, but we'll see how things go.

Yes..
Mario

Seems like a solid character. He feels like Brawl Mario with stronger KO moves and better combos.

Megaman

His fair and bair seem like they’ll be good approaching moves and they can combo if you land them. His uair can be used to keep characters in the air. It seems like Megaman will be a good keep away character to use. His down smash is a strong KO move.

More good news for me
Luigi

A lot of the combos and juggles he had in Brawl seem exactly the same. Down b doesn’t go as high as it did in Brawl while recovering, but it’s harder to get out of if hit by it. Nair has much less knock back than it did in Brawl, but a lot of hit stun. Nair to up smash combos at KO % and I think he can also combo nair into up b. Luigi looks good to me.

Depending on how long and easy to share match replays are, that could be a decent alternative.

But I'm keeping my expectations low for that, after Brawl kinda borked it.

I'll likely put together at least one tournament so they are scheduled around my time. Mario Kart 7 was a no go because it was always when I was a sleep.

Man, I'm so hungry for a legit leak... anything at this point. Even if it's a small one. Even as we get closer and closer to the Japanese 3DS release, it seems like we've really hit this temporary dead zone where news feels like it should be speeding up, but is actually slowing down.

Blah. Work isn't enough to distract me from thinking about Smash!

Yeah Weegee looks exciting to play as. As someone who's played with all versions of him, this one looks to be the best as far as comboability. (Is that a word? lol)

It's so exciting to know that a real, full, blow-out leak is can happen at any minute. It could be in the process of being written up as I type this!

Yeah, Sakurai's a bit skimpy on actual new, but alas.

Regarding the less amount of deaths per game, I believe it to be true, KO ceilings are too high, and there are many instances when I launched players in the demo far enough to be a KO, but they never hit the barrier.

If only that was true, but if we're being real about it, we probably can't reasonably expect a full blowout leak until a fair bit closer to 9/13, say the end of August or the first week of September. :(

Yeah, trying to keep my hopes in check. If the spectator mode is decent, I'd love to use my Elgato to record all the matches and share them in thread.

I think once we get confirmation that the game has gone gold we can really start expecting news. Once there are copies out in the wild it's only a matter of time until someone sneaks one off.

Going gold is not something nintendo typically announces, so we may not know for sure when it's going into print. It should be really soon though, since it comes out in exactly 1 month (as of like... 3 hours ago) in japan.

Hopefully you can spectate actual friend matches and not just random online matches, like in brawl.

That's true, and given that the Japanese 3DS release is pretty much a month away now, and games usually go gold around a month to three weeks before their release date... we SHOULD be approaching the last days of this not-very-much-news slog.

I felt like this too, but in reverse. I kept getting hit hard at high percent, and living for no reason. My DI wasn't great or anything.

Yeah, maybe in a week or so. To be honest, I'm expecting a bunch of veterans with only two newcomers, that's it.

More than two newcomers would be bonus for me at least.

Comboing with Luigi's nair sounds really satisfying.

Question I wanted to ask, why does character customisation having an separate screen mean that customisation is "dead"?
Dead in competitive matches, at least.

If it takes too long, people won't want to do it in a match.

It is not dead for your own personal enjoyment.

It's not dead really, you just can't change it on the fly. I'm sure people will still customize characters to their liking once enough time has passed.

In a tourney setting though it would be pretty inconvenient.

I wouldn't be surprised if you could save custom movesets to easily access them from the main screen, like you can with Names.

I'd imagine that you'd just quickly customize your characters inbetween sets, and that'd be that.

Heck, if customizations could be tied to nametags, you'd customize once at the very beginning of the tournament, and that'd be that.

Basically, yeah. I will still playing around with customization anyway. I'm still curious with the fact that would we see other character with 12 unique moves like Palutena and Mii?

If by some miracle a Custom Robo rep gets in, they'd almost certainly have 12 unique specials.

I think the problem there is that people may want to switch between different variants of the same character in-between matches.

True, but with two practical caveats:

You might want to change your custom moves based upon the match up, stage, or even your opponent's move choices. This would result in still going back to the menu.

And in a tournament setting, you won't be playing on your own system often. Usually it won't even be the same setup from match to match, again necessitating a return trip through the menu.

(Of course, these are only in regards to a competitive environment. Normally the time taken wouldn't be an issue at all.)

I don't think it will be a big problem though. As long as it takes less than ~30 seconds to hop over to the menu and change your settings. I know it adds up over the day, but I think we could withstand it once per match. I've seen Brawl/PM players change their controls before matches often enough, and custom moves probably won't take that long.

Yeah that's one of my primary concerns. Such different opinions on getting knocked out. Some say too easy, some say too difficult. I'm attributing it to stale moves being more of a thing this time around, or something else is going on.
Question I wanted to ask, why does character customisation having an separate screen mean that customisation is "dead"?

It's dead as far as using it a lot. It'd be nice to switch a custom move or two between fights, otherwise my choices are "use pre-established custom moveset... or don't" If given than 50/50, chances are i'll lean more toward "don't", which means i'll just end up always disabling it, just like I always disabled custom stages.

If i can change between fire and ice arrows as easily as I change between Final Destination and Battlefield, then I'll use it all the time.

You might want to change your custom moves based upon the match up, stage, or even your opponent's move choices. This would result in still going back to the menu.

Exactly. If I know I can defeat an opponent more easily using fire arrows and electric boomerang on battlefield, but then gale boomerang and ice arrows are better on Final Destination, it'd be nice to switch between the two easily.

well I don't think there would be a time limit like that anymore, would there?

I'd hope so, with significantly more RAM on both consoles and much more storage space (not to mention expandable) it seems like that would already address the issues that Brawl had.

But until we know for sure it's gonna bug me.

Too slow is a huge problem?

It's only an additional menu.. oh well, I guess I have more patience than some.
It's not that someone is tapping their foot waiting or something. Everyone can endure it each time. It's the idea that if it's excessive, then adding an extra minute or so per match could really add up by the end of an event.

I look at it like item switching. It found it no problem at all to go to a different menu to turn on and off different items, sometimes on a round by round basis, and certainly nobody would call the feature to switch specific items on and off a "dead" feature.
