Toymaker Takara Tomy took the previous console rivalry of Sega Genesis (known as Mega Drive in Japan) and Sony's PlayStation One and literally transformed it. The seemingly run-of-the-mill replicas are actually Transformers. The PSOne turns into the Autobot's leader Optimus Prime while the Genesis turns into the Decepticon's Megatron. Both figures were on display at earlier this month at the Summer Hobby Maker Joint Products Exhibition.

"Optimus Prime featuring Original PlayStation" will be released this fall in Japan. "Mega Drive Megatron" will be released in Japan in October for 10,000 yen (US$98).

Fuck, I'm glad I'm rich.

Water/food/heat/light can wait

If Megatron comes with Sonic cart, Prime should come with a Tekken 2 disc, because it just feels right.

With Sega's general friendliness toward licensing their hardware, I'm almost surprised that the Genesis/Mega Drive Megatron isn't fully functional. All the important internals would easily fit on a SoC, you just need to make it at a 1:1 scale and give it real I/O.

I'm sure some enterprising person will figure out how to mod these and make these actually work...though it would likely be via emulator.
