I suppose they could say he was on the way to it as the 11th then got sidetracked. Interesting.

I actually thought, and I'm sure a lot of people thought the same, that the 2010 Christmas Special would revolve around the Orient Express.

That's what I assumed too, I guess they decided to shelve the story for some reason.

No. It's worse somehow. Strax is the most awful part of the deal.

No.

That's a shame, Strax was the most consistently entertaining part of that group. He did get old, but his comedy bits in The Snowmen were pretty hilarious. I really can't stand Vastra and Jenny though...

Well if you liked his comedy a lot before maybe it won't be so bad for you, to me it just felt too forced.

Isn't he always? Then again, I find them all at least tolerable, they just never really seem to do much other than be there and look good. Together they are the quintissential Moffat character in distilled form - plot devices that look good and have no personalities, even if the dialog pretends they do.

He's finally getting to it.

That only took 300 years

You people have no souls. Strax is amazing.

I'll say this, I feel the same way about the gang (not just Strax) that I did about River Song. Cool idea that I found very entertaining at first but with each subsequent appearance my appreciation diminished more and more until I started to dread it. That's just me though.

They would be fine in small doses.

It's only been 3 episode since they were last used in a Doctor Who episode. It was only 7 episode prior to that when they were used in the Christmas special.

I hope Deep Breath is their only appearance this year.

Personally I never thought it was a tease to an actual story, just a throwaway line to send off the Doctor and co. into an offscreen adventure. Kind of like RTD's Time War namedrops: the Nightmare Child, Could Have Been King, etc. -- not actual characters or events that we'd see, just hints of things happening in the Doctor's life we don't see.

I'm secretly hoping that once we deal with Gallifrey for real, we get to see hints of those things, or find a bit out what they were. Not reveal everything, because those function on mystery, but just hear a little about their horror. The aftermath of what they've done. Things sounded cool as hell.

Watching some classic Who on Hulu. Watched Planet of the Spiders because it was the first episode I saw as a kid. Those foam spiders, man. On to Robot, a story with only slightly more convincing prosthetics.

Capaldi will be on The One Show tomorrow.

Christ, BBC, let Peter and Jenna sleep

Yup, yup, yup.

I am have been DVR'ing and watching the Doctor Who marathon currently going on on BBC America. Yeah, it pretty much confirmed that Donna is my favorite companion. With the rumors of Jenna Coleman leaving, here is hoping that series 9 brings a Donna-like companion who is a perfect counterbalance to the darker, more sarcastic doctor portrayed by Capaldi.

Also, seeing the interviews brings a huge smile in my face, because you know Capaldi is enjoying every moment he is doing Doctor Who. It will show in his performances too, which will easily be one of the best doctors in a long time.

Approaching soon! First time I'll get to watch the episodes live with you guys in the thread. I binged the seasons on Netflix over the winter. I'm excited!

Capaldi? Sarcastic? I dunno... you really think that's the Doctor he'll play? I think his Doctor will be very serious with tinges of levity because he likes to explore.

Just got around to watching this. I am convinced the camera location was decided specifically to achieve as much of visibility of Jenna's thighs as possible. I am finding it incredibly difficult to be a gentleman and take issue with this.

The Mexico City Q&A highlights video is up on YouTube now

I look forward to watching the longer versions of those sessions

Good lord, the man looks 7 feet tall on that couch

Maybe sarcastic is the wrong word, but Capaldi described his doctor as "less user friendly" and during the regeneration "he forgot how to deal with human emotions" as delicately as previous doctors. So he will play the doctor we all love, but definitely with a more mysterious and dark edge. I do think that it includes a little bit more sarcasm, but who knows. I am finding out the kind of doctor he is like the rest of the world

Regardless, it will rock. Series 8 will be amazing and Capaldi will be a wonderful doctor. I already have my hand on the preorder button for the blu ray of it.

Now matter how dark they say he will be, they will be mindful of what went wrong when they tried that with the Sixth doctor.

oh, not have him do this:

So fucking pumped for this season.

I like to pretend the 6th Doctor's entire tenure was a fever dream from spectrox poisoning and the Doctor was actually in a coma until Time and the Rani... an episode which I unfortunately can't think of a similarly convenient way to discount

The real safety net though is that Moffat lacks the contempt for his own show that JNT had.

watching the Stolen Earth again

Rose is disgustingly whiny and jealous considering every universe is about to end

Also, Harriet Jones was right. The Doctor was a giant asshole to her.

If you wanna discuss sexism in the show look no further than the Doctor taking power away from a female prime minister simply because she makes one (not totally unjust) mistake. And he does it in the most snide way possible.

Such an asshole move that ultimately leads to the death of millions. Good job Doc!

True, the treatment of Harriet Jones left me with a terrible taste in my mouth in Doctor Who until they did amazing episodes like "school reunion" and "the girl in the fireplace." It could have been handled so MUCH better.

I'm not sure if this is a joke or not, but I don't think it was sexism. It was more to show how different 10 was from 9, there were things that the "fresh-out-of-the-timewar" Doctor stood for that 10 would not. 9, whether he knew it or not, had still a bit of the War Doctor in him. 10 would never stand for mass murder of any species, even the Daleks, as shown in Journey's End.

Jesus. I still can't comprehend how that passed into the shooting schedule.

The Doctor was definitely a dick. I didn't pay much attention to what he said at first watch, but anytime I think about that episode and what he said as a way to kick her out of office was terrible.

I can't find good avatar material for Series 8. Capaldi's poses aren't working for me and my Phil Kessel-themed avatars.

I was deeply offended by what happened to Harriet Jones. She was 100% justified in her actions. I found that whole ending seriously sexist.

How was she justified in shooting down the ship when they were leaving? She killed in cold blood.

Although thinking about it, the Doctor was far more lenient on the Brigadier basically doing the same thing.. :S

10 saw himself as kind of a hero of morals. Overdid it a bit in reaction to his role in the war.

But the PM was right. The Doctor wouldn't always be there, as we directly see in Children of Earth. If they came back with an entire army, the Doctor may never have shown up, and mankind could've ended while he was away. (History is known to change just because the Doctor knows about it being one way in his own history see: the evil frost dudes taking over future Earth, and then later the Daleks, when none of that happened in history until the Doctor acknowledged it and went there to see it.)

Unless they want to explain the Doctor being both the Roman guy AND the guy in Children of Earth, fobwatched. That'd make the 12th Doctor more fucked up than the War Doctor...

It's something that RTD even expressed during Children of Earth when Torchwood has to deal with the problem sometimes the Doctor isn't always around to protect the Earth.
