Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

Avoid the holiday period, smart.

Nintendo's first party support for the 3DS already seems inadequate and scattershot. It's hard to imagine a split install base attracting developers, or even benefiting Nintendo.

I don't see how it makes sense for anyone to ignore the 45+ million 3DS install base to make exclusive games for this. And I'm not holding my breath on the NEW 3DS features being used in many significant games. We'll probably look back in a few years and at laugh people panicking about needing to buy a new handheld.

That looks really good. O_O

feels a bit late to release a new 3ds, not a lot of games coming out for the system.

Codename STEAM still comes out next year and probably sequels to big third party games. Maybe some new MH game too. Perfect timing to release a revision in my opinion.

I really don't understand Nintendo's way of thinking. New Nintendo 3DS! Right after they released a 2DS because nobody cared about 3D. The amount of games that are going to use those buttons is going to be minimal.

The 2DS didn't release in Japan, where this announcement was made.

I laughed at the new "stick".

Can't be worse than the ol' laptop clit mouses, should be good enough for many games.

And damn I think I'm as torn about this as everyone else... I was one of the people that actually upgraded from a DS to DSi and didn't get a whole lot out of the deal (the store was mostly ass). This feels like a stop-gap towards a more powerful 'true' next gen portable in another year or two (again, like the DSi).

That said... I'll probably get it because I'm a chump... but I may not trade my XL in for it in case it blocks the upcoming homebrew channel.

Funny they won't release it till 2015, they will miss the whole holiday season with that...
Well I guess Nintendo Europe and America are confident enough, the 3DS will still sell well enough with the bundles.

The system seems to be custom made for Monster Hunter, which may be what Nintendo was going for. Monster Hunter 4s (and perhaps 5) using the extra buttons could squeeze a few hundred thousand repeat purchases out of die-hard fans. For late to the party purchasers, this will just replace the current model.

Um, what dafuq are you smoking? While it may not be quite as convenient as a proper cloud based system, the 3DS's system transfer system is near flawless for what it is.

That would involve having both systems at the same time. So as the price of my 3DSXL now depreciates, I am expected to hang onto it, and go into a brick and mortar store and transfer shit in front of some shop clerks eyes, or take one home and sell the other later.

Maybe thats fine for the person that just owns multiple 3DS hardware for the laughs, but that aint me.

Guess I might finally jump in.

Don't see anything wrong with the nipple - I actually quite liked them on my old ThinkPads!

This is actually something that's worth highlighting. I used laptops with trackpoints for years and they can be very useful.

This is a real megaton. It tells us a few things I think:

- There is no "real" 3DS successor in the foreseeable future
- Nintendo has been thinking long and hard about how to extend the 3DS generation
- They've decided that a stop-gap measure with an improved 3DS can buy them a few years

With this and Amiibo, it seems Nintendo's strategy is to milk as much cash as possible from their existing, already-loyal fanbase until the actual new dedicated game platforms are ready to launch (probably 2016).

I don't think New 3DS in particular will do much to reverse the platform's decline, though. Seems more like a pretty desperate response to the platform trending towards legacy levels.

Do you need both systems with you to do this? What if I want to trade in my existing to buy the new one, so I'll only have the new one to hand.

Have we heard anything about it's region restriction status? This could potentially be my next import if so.

Not yet.
But it would be such a megaton... My bet is 'no it isn't'. They know we all want it and I guess it would have been definitely mentioned.

So what are you saying is that I have to hold my OG 3DS until the new one, losing money in the process.

Also no trade-in, because I would also loss my games.

Yeah, flawless.

3DS is getting long in the tooth.

Rather see them ride out the hardware till they are ready to push a new real successor instead of this half step.

Now with this shit coming it means we won't get a real fucking new system till 2016 at the earliest.

Is that really that hard?

Damn. I can't believe this. An upgrade that is pretty substantial. Still... not sure I like the 2nd circle pad size or the shoulder buttons positions, guess impressions will enlighten me there.
The 2 3D sliders really intrigue me too. Wonder if it means the sweet spot is wider and the 3D is deeper.

No way I can get rid of my Zelda 3DS XL though, I barely go on 3DS as it is atm too, so not sure I can really justify getting one. The thing that it seems most awesome for is the dual circle pads and shoulder buttons for me, but I only have 2 games that use them, KH3D and RE:R both of which I've pretty much played to death and can't see going back to for a while. ..

Welp, glad I was waiting on a 3DS or 2DS purchase. Though... there's really not much here that necessitates me waiting for this New 3DS, that second stick looks like those laptop nubs that were annoying and impossible to use.

The new buttons are awesome though. Couple that with the other bitty features and I suppose I'll at least wait on one until I hear the release date.

If that release date is too far away though I'm not waiting.

Yeah, they probably want to buy themselves a few years (especially with the Wii U still on life support) until their inevitable unified architecture is ready. I wonder how they will proceed from here on, software-wise, as I can think of a few potential scenarios:
1. Concentrate more on New 3DS exclusives to make it a more attractive upgrade for current owners.
2. Go for the wider audience and release more games for all 3DS/2DS SKUs
3. Go the DSi route: a bunch of New 3DS "enhanced" games that work on all 3DSes, but have more features/better graphics on the new systems.

Nintendo, you gotta knock it the fuck off with these names. Calling something "New ___" is awful, and will make no god damn sense in about six months.

These minor increments are also grating, but they can get away with it. Why? Because I even think it's bullshit, and I'm still going to buy one. I did skip XL, though.
