Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

wow looks cool, want one.

but isnt the hardware is pretty dated now?

Ive only played 3DS in shops a few times, how does the visuals stack up against new phones/ vita these days?

3DS is very poor in hardware comparisons.

You don't buy a 3DS for visual quality. You buy it for games you want to play. Otherwise it has nothing to offer. It's basically crap as pure hardware goes.

My guess as to their reasons:

1) New design avoids the patent issues - HUGE REASON

2) Counter piracy - BIG BIG REASON

3) Monster Hunter (make CPP features standard) - BIG REASON

4) Support Amiibo - why not

...

...

...

22) More powerful to support more powerful games thus fragmenting the market

I think you are underestimating the amiibo support. Probably one of the biggest cause Nintendo obviously believes in it.

Xenoblade with a sticker "Only for the New 3DS!"

"But the 2DS was the new 3DS, right?"
"No, sir, this is the New 3DS."
"Oh! You mean the large one? The XL?"
"No, this XL is the New 3DS XL."
"Oh. Well I'll take the old one. It's cheaper!"
"But it doesn't play the New games."
"BUT THIS *IS* A NEW GAME! Why won't a new game play on the system?"
"Again, that's not the New XL system."
"Whatever. I'm taking the old XL and the new game."

Mad respect for retail workers.

Hopefully they won't be stupid enough to keep that name in the west. "New" is a loanword in Japanese so its probably going to be confusing there too.

I would laugh like crazy if the NoA one ends up being white with purple buttons.

While I definitely want the Famicom version, I wouldn't mind the purple SNES one either. I just want either of them vs. none at all. Would suck if we just got stuck with a couple colors, and got shafted on the retro version.

Sorry if this has been asked(thread is huge now!) but why didn't they move the Start and Select buttons to the middle, move the ABXY down to parallel with the D pad, and the have a second analog stick that was the same size as the one on the left?

Surely someone at Nintendo thought about that, right?
Don't you think that would be uncomfortable to hold, with the primary buttons so low? The analog slider is the primary control method, so it's more line with that. I couldn't imagine holding the DS neat the bottom like that to play.

How the hell can Nintendo get everything right with the 3ds and fuck it up so bad with Wii U?

Well at this rate they don't care about forwards compatibility and standards on their consoles. So Wii U slim will probably be no gamepad and have higher specs and its own games. Fucking confusing as hell.

Reminds me of the people that wished PS4 would upgrade their specs every few years.

Uh oh, I just realized a sad truth...

The 2DS ain't ever coming to Japan now, is it?

There goes my hope of a cheap import machine. :(

I don't think this is going to be a very smart business move. How is Nintendo going to convince old 3DS owners to upgrade for only a handful of exclusives? Major games like Pokemon OR/AS and Smash Bros are going to stay on the old 3DS. Sure Xenoblade is nice but it's not some massively popular IP that's going to convince millions of people to buy new hardware. It's a niche RPG.

I'll be getting this and I'm actually excited for it. Curious, what the price translates to in USD? I'm sure I missed it somewhere, but if someone can answer, I'd be grateful.

It'll probably be called the 3DSi or something, calm down everyone

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. The 3DSLL was renamed the 3DSXL over here, so why can't they just give this a different name in the West? Seems pretty likely, I think.

cause chances are they aren't dropping support for OG 3DS. Just a game once in awhile will be N3DS only.

Pretty much. I doubt Devs will flock to make a game that can only be sold on the New 3DS. I think most will opt to make games that work across all 3DS including the new 3DS. It's nice that devs have the option to use more power if they need to. But I can't imagine that we'll get a ton of exclusive titles just for it. IT will pretty much be a superior 3Ds model w/ the occasional exclusive that takes advantage of the new power.

They should have this out in time for Xmas in the States. They could even bundle it with Smash. But no, they'll probably release it in like March or some strange month where console sales are typically low. :sigh: nintendo....

I really hope so, I mean I'm getting one either way but I really hope they come up with a better name for it in NA.

That would sell like hotcakes. Waiting for next year makes no sense.

It is weird and it's indeed going to affect their 3DS holiday numbers :/

It is, it is the 3DS' successor; anyone saying otherwise is fooling themselves.

Oh yeah, it's such a big next-gen reveal that it was revealed only on a Nintendo Direct for only one market. At least the 3DS XL was shown worldwide, was that a bigger successor to the 3DS?

It is, it is the 3DS' successor; anyone saying otherwise is fooling themselves.

Seems like more of a half-way point than a full-on successor. Like a Gameboy Color equivalent, really. It'll have some exclusive games and some games that will play on both systems, but will be enhanced on the newer one. That's what I think, at least.

On one hand I want to play new Pokemon and smash brother, but I don't want to wait till 2015 to play it on an upgraded system

Wait I'm confused. Is this Nintendo's new official handheld? Will I still be able to play games released for it on my regular 3DS? 0_0

It's why, unlike everyone else, I'm over the moon that they aren't releasing this in the West this Christmas. The average Christmas shopper already has the IQ of a potato, trying to explain that 3DS games won't work on a regular DS is already difficult enough without bringing this badly named model into the equation.

It's the DSi of the 3DS.

It's a 3DS, but publishers and developers have the option to cut off the majority of the system's audience for whatever reason.

It is, it is the 3DS' successor; anyone saying otherwise is fooling themselves.

So you think it will have a lot of titles that are only exclusive to it? I honestly see the majority of the games on this system just being 3DS titles. At least for me, it's not really a new console/platform, unless it has a majority of its titles being exclusive to that console.

And before you say, well what about consoles with cross gen games. Fair enough. But even in those instances, the majority of the games have better performance (whether that is resolution, FPS or other features that can only be done because the new specs). So for me, in order for this to be a new console (in the sense we are talking about), the majority of the titles released for it would need to have games specifically made for it (or 3ds titles that have features that can only be done on the new 3ds).

...

Why isn't this a new system again?

Because it's safe to assume that the jump between 3DS and its successor will be much more massive.

256MB RAM is great for the 3DS ecosystem, and that's it. Nothing exceptionally revolutionary or mindblowing.

Nintendo should have just waited another year and released 4DS with more upgrades
- All the features of New 3DS (Amiibos, extra buttons)
- Dual Sliders (not a shit C stick)
- Higher Res Capacitive top screen
- Powerful as a Vita or more
- Full backwards compatability with DS/3DS as well as VC support for N64 and all past consoles

? I don't even know where to start with this post.
Seems like more of a half-way point than a full-on successor. Like a Gameboy Color equivalent, really.
Yep, it's a minor successor, one that could easily be mistaken by a revision by the masses, but a successor nonetheless.
It'll have some exclusive games and some games that will play on both systems, but will be enhanced on the newer one. That's what I think, at least.
Yep, we are going to see retail and download exclusives and enhanced titles, just like with the DSi, a successor to the DS which in an uncommon move came out in the same gen (7th) as the DS!

2 7th gen handhelds, 2 8th gen handhelds? Nintendo's not stopping! Expect the New 3DS to have a lifespan akin to the GBC and DSi.

Beyond hyped for this one, this is making me want to play on my DSi right now!

Regarding the new system thing, it kind of is but it's also the same platform. Like upgrading your PC a bit, or buying a new smartphone.

I think we are looking too much into it. If more exclusive titles come people will start upgrading but why that would be a problem after two years or more?

I think we d rather discuss the new features than the existence of the revision.

Ok so will I not be able to play that Xenoblade game they just announced on my regular 3DS?
