That last scene with the
power of friendship
stuff is actually the very limit to how corny the plot gets. And honestly, once you've made it there, everything else was decent enough to make it ignorable.

Yeah, I mean it's not enough to completely discount any goodwill that came before it, but it is still pretty disappointing that so many JRPG's go down that route these days.

I just recently played through Fire Emblem Awakening and I could not roll my eyes further back into my skull hah.

Regarding the former:
And as others have mentioned, that's the part it most explicitly touches on that subject. That part of the ending is not as well built as the rest of the game in my opinion. The rest of the time it's much more subdued. It has grounded characters. It treats a wide variety of themes, and that's what I like. I didn't mind Left Behind didn't have that many gameplay sections as it touched on suicide, ambitions, love and more. I find Persona similarly deals with a wide variety of subjects in a grounded and well written way.
Like I mention in this post. Still, to each their own. But I feel taking a vertical slice of a game, the ending at that, is not enough to critic that specific part for its story without the context preceding it. Trust me, I don't care for simple dichotomy either. Ocarina of Time is my favourite game of all time and I honestly don't care for the plot much. We're many saying it makes sense with all the context and is not the way it's made out to be on a short Wikipedia plot quote. Plus, there's multiple endings - if you want to not keep
pursuing the truth, you can end the game without doing that dungeon. In fact, to get to that part of the game, you have to really want to keep seeing the other charactes as the game practically encourages you to leave it as is. If you feel like listening to only what is in front of you, you can also do that and not catch the killer. If you want to betray your friends’ trust and go see the killer and be forced to become an accomplice, and become isolated in turn, you can do that.

About Fire Emblem Awakening, couldn't agree more. I absolutely loved PoR and RD's stories. Awakening's ending did away with any semblance of the good stuff from those two entries. The ending was way worse. A simple dichotomy of good vs evil replaced the grey morality.

Thanks, will do! I'll be honest, I'm not hugely familiar with either series. I have a 3DS so maybe I'll just check out the latest one for that.

You should definitely look into getting Shin Megami Tensei IV. It's probably one of the most atmospheric games I've ever played; sharp, gritty and it's practically devoid of the tropes you're not a fan of. If exploring a post apocalyptic world, fighting demons and having to tough choices strikes your fancy, then you should definitely get this game.

It's the perfect game to jump into Shin Megami Tensei series.

Yeah, actually Fire Emblem awakening is much worse in that regard, because the entire game is an eye rolling exercise. Honestly if you're able to stand FE: A, Persona 4 would be like a breath of fresh in comparison.

Well they are exactly that, dialogue choices in social links have an effect, especially in P3 where you can "fail" an encounter and have a reversed relationship. Unless I'm misunderstanding your question.

During my time with persona 4 I never failed any social link or had an adverse effect. It always ended up leveling up the link almost no matter.

Maybe if I chose asshole replies I would have failed ? but then again I don't remember there being that many bad choices.

Didn't Devil Survivor 2 use phones to summon demons? Never played the game, just watched some of the terrible show.

Yeah, but they used a demon summoning program that summoned actual physical demons to fight for you. Personas are an embodiment and aren't really physical.

In P4 I think you can only reverse with
Naoto
. But choosing some answers instead of some others will make ranking up that S.Link take longer.

In P3 reversing S. Links is more common, and not only from some answers you can choose but also from, say, accepting invites and cancelling them shortly after in favour of someone else, or not spending a day with someone for a long while.

can anyone translate what this comic says?

Panel 1:
Persona 5 has a new PV!

Panel 2:
Hey you... You know that red was already used as an image color, don't you?
Huh?

Panel 3:
Hey you... You've got some nerve, wearing glasses like that...
Huh!?

Panel 4:
I... I'm so sorry! Someone, help me!
Not like it matters. It's fine.
That's just their way of welcoming him.

In the trailer there seems to be a lot of focus on phones. Do you guys think they're the new summoning Persona mechanism?

Many say this, but I'm not really seeing it. I see a lot of people using phones in the trailer, yes, but it's a modern Japanese city, so that's par for the course.

Ive never played any games in this series but here's how I want this next game to be

Considering there are literally no other AAA console JRPG's on the horizon besides this to get excited about. (Thanks SE), I don't see how this is an unreasonable position.

I don't exactly have much to choose from or place hope in.

ps4 is really sounding like the best current gen home console right now, tlou was fantastic. bioware's DAI, red's witcher3, atlus's p5, i mean wow. ps4 cannot be resisted

the remote play thing, its probably too small for dai or witcher, but im sure the p5 will be a good candidate for remote play, seeing the anime character driven game on the oled screen is a treat, it'll probably be very contrasty if there is a tanned character in p5

One of the subtle things I noticed while analyzing the trailer is this little tidbit that they put in:

Could mean nothing, could mean something

Also, can't understand japanese but can anyone translate?:

all of this so true. SMT IV is a stone cold masterpiece.

i think that is a common thing on japanese trains

EDIT: for the second part i believe people have said it talks about different crimes. Somebody else can go into specifics.

I should play persona 3 then.

That sounds really interesting.

Sorry to ask, but what does "["waifu"/"husbando" crap = ban]" in the thread title mean? Isn't it just a way of saying which character is your favorite?

Personally I found the really optimistic, cheesy stuff pretty endearing. Maybe I had been playing too many dark and gritty shooters when I played it or something.

Sorta, just in a manner where waifu is your fictional anime wife and husbando is the male version of waifu. It gets annoying and derails the threads from any legitimate conversations that can be ongoing.

It hurts me that you didn't like Persona 3 and don't think highly of Persona 4, but I commend you for trying to get into them. Persona 5 seems to have a much more mature theme to it but only time will tell how well its execution is. As a fellow GAFer pointed out, you should check out SMT. Digital Devil Saga is quite mature and so is Nocturne. With that said, these games involve a lot of grinding and at times the story can be very minimal until a certain event in the storyline is achieved. (Digital Devil Saga places more emphasis on the story than Nocturne does though.)

It just sounded really funny. For someone who has no real experience with a series talking about what a future game should be tonally or acting like the series wasn't a certain tone they want already. I honestly can't think of a cast of more grounded characters in games than the last iteration.

I mean even quoting an ending you've never seen or have any context for, it's just funny.

Maybe play the games, then. See if you like them and then talk about what you'd like to see in future installments. They're pretty good even if there are aspects you don't care for.

"omg guys isn't chie the best"

"nah yukiko is my waifu, chie sucks"

"rise doesn't represent a real girl, chie is so much more realistic"

"according to tyrone, people who like risette have absolutely poor taste in women"

Get it now?

I admitted to not playing the series because of what I saw in let's plays, but I have watched a good 10 hours or so of Giant Bomb's endurance run of P4 (including the ending as I mentioned). I have a pretty good idea of what the game is and isn't like.

Seven years will have past since the last full on release when P5 hits, it isn't unfathomable to expect a series to change in tone after that amount of time has past. Especially considering the same audience who played those games are now significantly older. And given what I saw in the teaser trailer, it does look changed.

With that being said, I'm not writing the series off because of what the games were like in the past, all I'm doing is projecting my hopes for this series and JRPG's in general for the future.

Social Links can, however, be reversed if players do not spend time with the respective people holding the Link, end up booking two holiday invitations on one day, or gave an improper answer during their conversations. The reverse effect will also continue to last until the protagonist reconciles with them. At some point a Social Link can even be broken, prohibiting the protagonist from fusing personas from the respective Arcana.

From the Wiki. Don't get me wrong though, I had two S. Links reverse by accident (one she did not like the answer I chose, the other I hadn't hung out with in a good few months) and none break. It's more present than in P4, but still not very common.

Someone in PersonaGAF was saying that the papers discuss bullying, a murderer on the loose, and a raise in taxes. I'll look for the original post, so I can clarify whether or not that is all that is covered in the paper.

EDIT:

For the record, the thing the P5 protag was looking at in the trailer on the train was a little banner about bullying issues.

Actually lots of stuff here. Car accident, murderer running around, falsified evidence, tax raise. #Persona5

If nothing else, definitely clear that this'll be tackling a lot of familiar social issues. #Persona5

I believe some people go too far and it ends up into a battle against who's the best. Not sure myself.
Yeah, pretty much this. I have yet to see it here, but on other sites I have seen some actual waifu wars and it just makes for an unpleasent visit for all users. Good on the mods for banning that type of discussion, if we can even call it that haha.

That sounds perfect to me! I will absolutely look into it some more.

Appreciate the response.

Be careful though. SMTIV fans usually "forget" to mention the really boring and repetitive battle system featuring pixelated cardboard characters/monsters and the insane difficulty spikes. Feel like mentioning because it caught me by surprise when I first played it. Not saying you wont enjoy it, just a warning really.

but it makes total sense in the whole persona lore and world. Its not just random ass powers because "we're all friends" with no reasoning behind it. With how the persona are created, and the power of the fool arcana, it is possible.

It also stems back to how they even have persona powers
Philemon serves as a neutral observer and he watches as things unfold. He cannot directly interfere, however, the party is aided by the Velvet Room, which is filled with his servants. Philemon is conducting an experiment with Nyarlathotep to see if humans can become enlightened beings, rising above their nature, or if they will completely and utterly destroy themselves. While Philemon continues to play by the rules, Nyarlathotep breaks one of the conditions of the experiment by interfering with the humans and directly manipulates events to ensure the destruction of mankind.

While Nyarlathotep is a monstrous entity born of human evil and desire for destruction in all its forms, Philemon is a guide formed out of its best impulses and desires for growth and hope. The war between the two is revealed to be essentially a bet between the two meant to probe Humanity's heart to wonder what lies inside: whether Nyarlathotep's ultimate triumph, or Philemon's.

That is the one thing I do remember in my PS2 playthrough. Was trying to rank up Ai one day when Yukiko suddenly showed up and wasted my day. Had no other similar situations pop up though and it was never brought up again.

And I don't know, I'd rather there be at least small comments rather than nothing at all. Imagine it is really hard to pull of those variables together, but imagine the replayability if they pulled it off.
Yeah, there are a couple of other instances, but it's nothing too big. Like you said, you felt like you wasted a day, so they probably didn't want to do it constantly.

It'd be nice if the game recognized if you made some kind of commitment to one of the other characters, but I've just come to realize that it's too much work to be able to account for all the possible choices.

Hell, even BioWare gave up and wrote their crappy ending for ME3 while charging 15 bucks for the "character stuff" as an extra DLC chapter.

Hehe, more than anything - reading the reviews and seeing the insane playtime length is what's scaring me. I'll probably pick it up tomorrow afternoon though seeing as I'm pretty burnt out on Diablo 3 right now.
