Destiny review copies being sent out one day before release, impacting review dates

I guess it is possible but I personally doubt it. I don't see how you properly review a game like this before the servers open to the public. If its supposed to be a "living, breathing world" it would not be a fair review if it was a barren wasteland when you played it for the review.

Im not going to lie, I am a little perturbed about the reviews not going up early but I think with a game like this it is understandable.

Yeah I agree with you, I'm just gonna have to do some research on my own because I didn't know some of the things till I came in here like one raid and it has no matchmaking for raids and stuff like that

We already know how the game looks, feels and plays. The one thing I wanted to know from the reviews was how much content there is to the game on day one and how well the missions have been designed for replay-ability.

Looks like I'll be finding out along with everybody else.
Yes all those who played the Alpha & Beta already.
The thing that I don't understand is why are you relying on polygon, IGN and such to forge your opinion. You played it right? These guys are useless.
Maybe just wait a week or two and check the gamers opinions here on GAF.

If there was no beta where millions have tried it, I'd call red flag. But I doubt this is similar. I'm confident without a Polygon or any other review.

And I'm not even into FPS Games much.

Since we know how it plays and the basics of the character progression the only possible red flag I could see come out in reviews is just how much content there is in the basic campaign before you get to grinding end game stuff. Or the servers might be on fire. I suppose that is also possible.

My guess is that they are worried about scores being lowered due to "lack of content". Therefore, they are trying to give reviewers too little time to see everything before they publish their reviews.

Doesn't matter to me. Limited Edition still staying preordered but I will say that sounds like some sketchy shit.

Interesting.

I don't really pay attention to reviews from gaming sites anymore, so I guess this has little effect for me. I'll wait on word of mouth before I decide to buy Destiny or not.

Did we ever get an answer as to what percentage of the missions we got in the beta?

Data mining from the beta revealed the names of 22 story missions, and the beta had 6 of them including one on the Moon that was unlocked for a limited time.

It also included one strike mission, while data mining found six names.

I emphasize that this is from data mining because the final numbers could be different.

Seems more likely they don't want them reviewing high level PVE content before release. There's no way you can level and be raid ready in a day. I'm sure there have been/are servers live for testing.

They must be worried about review scores... Thinking about cancelling my preorder now

Alpha + Beta sold me on the game, as it did many people.

I don't think Activision + Bungie aren't as concerned for scores, so much as reviewers leveling too far ahead of the main populace. They seem to want most on starting on equal footing, hence the alpha + beta progress doesn't transfer.

The game will likely melt PSN and Live on launch day, so a lot of us won't be playing on the 9th! Reviewers getting it a day before launch is likely because of servers and tweaks though, like many have said.

It has nothing to do with drm.
The game would work perfectly fine when played solo. There's no real reason to not give that option
I'm assuming you mean as paid DLC? Or have they hinted at any free post-release content?

If I may, to avoid misinformation:

  • 1 area per planet (so, we've already seen 50% of the explorable zones in the beta, this does not include strikes, raids, or multi, or whatever The Reef is.)

Hell don't think we have seen 50% of the explorable zones. There are a few places that were blocked or was guarded by ?? level enemies on earth, and we only saw like 1/3 of the moon (unless I miss that the moon was much more explorable during story). Granted through I still a bit iffy of the 1 area per planet thing.

Doesn't want the negative narrative to take hold until after release.

People are going to be upset about the lack of original content in this game.

And the Souls series could have had a pause button while playing offline. Some things are up to the developer and we can't always be 100% sure of their motivations.

Right. SimCity all over again.

I'd like to think Destiny is a little more of an online multiplayer experience than SimCity.

It's not like launch day reviews will accurately review all of Destiny's assets.

And if they weren't confident in Destiny, they wouldn't have released the Alpha/Beta in the first place.

Because their brutal marketing campaign and two pre-release tests didn't cut it, right?

An Alpha/Beta is a vertical slice of gameplay though, the decision not to send review code out early could be a sign that there are other issues with the game. Namely, there's content issues or other issues that would cause such a negative response it might result in lost sales.

It could all be entirely harmless too, but I'll never give any game that doesn't send out review code early the benefit of th doubt.

The thing is, to review this game you need more than 4 people in your psn/xbl party. Those who aren't sure will wait for reviews a week or two - no big deal imo if they aren't sure if they want to buy it right after release.

Ps. yes, I'm gettin it day 1 and I'm not worried, cause if you're looking for a great FPS game, you'll get it with Destiny.

I'm sure the game would be populated enough with Bungie players as well as the hundreds of reviewer worldwide.

It's a strange decision by Acti/Bungie not to send review code out until the day before release. It's often a bad sign...

well after BF4, reviews days before release are fucking useless opinions to me, you have to review this kind of games when shit hits the fan and millions of people are playing it

anyway, too bad i wanted to satiate my thirst for the game with reviews and shit but i can live without them as well

Yeah maybe Bungie will introduce some unbeatable runners, polygon are on it:

If you tried Destiny, I'm sure I'll see you next week playing it.

Totally irrelevant since Destiny isn't an MMO.

My thoughts too. Most of the solo game is done with 2 other people...

Anyways, I'm not worried about reviewers not getting their hands on the game early but what does worry me is opening the servers on the 9th... Couple that with psn that always takes a crap and I'm not really expecting to be playing this day 1.

Not a huge fan of companies holding out on copies to prevent early reviews. GAF gives other companies shit for this practice so it applies here as well. Honestly, the amount of content is still the biggest ? out there. I guess I don't consider running a strike 5 times in a row to get a pair of gloves to be "content."

I feel like given the sheer volume of attention Destiny has received in its run-up to launch, that it was inevitable that Activision would hold onto the review copies until the last possible second. The mind-share of this game is enormous; any news on this game gets rehashed everywhere. Even if only a few reviews came out early that were lukewarm, it'd likely trigger a rush to cancel pre-orders. This way those pre-orders stay locked-in and Activision feels like they can roll with the punches of those crying foul because, as people have rightfully pointed out, the Alpha and Beta were all very public events that have been examined and re-examined to death and the general consensus has been largely positive.

Personally, I've got a good idea of what this game is and isn't. My experience with the Alpha and Beta were more than enough to sell me on the merits of the game so a lackluster showing in the review department from the usual suspects isn't going to sway me one way or the other. Fact is a lot of my enjoyment, outside of exploration, will come from who I play with; I'm not going to be heading into Strike Missions with game journalists, I'm going in guns blazing with DestinyGAF.

So like Diablo 3 then?

It doesn't. Solo play is never solo in destiny. There is other players in your world, there are server side events happening, there is loot dropped by the server, and so on.

I don't place a lot of value in reviews that were written based on a pre-release copy of a game that is so much about online community.

I also don't place a lot of value in reviews that were written based on a review copy that was received at the time of release. The reviewers will just be racing to check the boxes off as quickly as possible.

Basically, don't trust Destiny reviews.

I played all of the beta solo. Did some random guys running around really change my experience that drastically?
Maybe not but the game was fundamentally designed with those social aspects in mind. I guess they could have redesigned the entire game for the SP fans but they did not.

I reckon Bungie/Activision are fairly happy with the quality of their new video game.

Destiny being the most preordered new IP of all time would seem to suggest that people agree with Bungie/Activision. Regardless of what a website would write about it.

Watch Dogs held that title up until 27 May, 2014. That video game went on to ship 8 million copies as of 10 July, 2014.

Things like this is why reviews don't matter, and blows my mind why people still use reviews.

It's not like movies where critics get to watch the movie early. It's a 3 hour movie, it's either good or not. A video game requires far more time. A week isn't enough to make a proper review, let alone a day.

Believe it or not, there are people out there that would rather not take a punt on a $60 game. It is seriously mindblowing I know.

"Vertical slice" doesn't really apply to the way this beta went. It wasn't like we just got two isolated levels and a multiplayer match. We got examples of each of the game's main modes (missions, strikes, free roam) and got to see the connective social hub and progression system. Later on content issues could certainly exist, but we got a really good look at most of the systems in the game.

Pretty sure you had to matchmake to do the strike mission. Also it's good to have it all online to prevent some modding like what borderlands turns into.

That sounds terrible. Everyone should cancel their preorders. Especially those who preordered the PS4 Ghost edition.

Or just sell me theirs.

That'll show 'em!

This means I may have the game long before reviews, since copies should hit street-breaking stores this week. Who knows if the servers will be up, though.
