Destiny review copies being sent out one day before release, impacting review dates

I wonder how many reviewers will dock points for not having their egos stroked and not be able to review the game before it came out?

Seems like the reviewers will not be able to log on early. So if they put up a review Wednesday, you can toss it in the trash. Sorry, it isn't a review if you haven't finished the game. It is an early impression or whatever else you want to call it.

It certainly feels like an MMO at times but it certainly is not an mmo. It has mmo elements in it sure but it's still not an mmo. More like co-op halo meets mas effect art style.

It feels like it's own game and I never felt mmoish except in the hubs where I suddenly wished I had a keyboard or better ways to communicate with others. The fact that communication outside of little groups is so gimped really kills the mmo argument dead in its tracks. This can't be an mmo.

I disagree. After playing the beta, I realized Destiny is a MMO and not a good one (hugely repetitive) - see my thread about it.

Reviews for a world meant to be filled with people not being available until after that world is filled?

Say it ain't so, GAF. Say it ain't so.

I am looking forward to reviews of this game. Having played the alpha and the beta, I know I am going to love it, but I want to know what the critics think. This will be interesting.

You damn kids.

Back in the day, we didn't buy games because of a review. If it had cool boxart, an intriguing backdrop, and was new you bought it.

We've played an alpha. We've played a beta. The company has a track record of excellence. But I'm canceling my pre-order, boo-hoo. At this point, people have enough info to make a go or no-go decision. Quit crying like a bunch of babies.

Played and loved the beta, still getting this day one. BUT, any time a company attempts to delay reviews like this, it should make your spidey-sense tingle.

The funny thing is that there's no way this gets bad reviews. But, there is clearly some bit of information they don't want to see backlash over prior to release. That is what is scaring some people. They weren't hinging their purchases on review scores, but Bungie/Activision shying away from them has scared a few people away for the moment.

Safe bet on what they're afraid of has already been guessed a million times. But, whatever. I'm sure it'll be awesome, if short. I'll just sell it once I'm done with it. I guess some good came out of them not putting it out on PC where I'd be stuck with it even if I was done with it quickly.

"ugh.. Reaper of souls expansion canceled, I can beat the campaign in 5 hours, there is no content"

Diablo 3 is way longer than 5 hours. Not that it matters since your entire argument of "but you didn't bitch about this, so you can't bitch about that!" is nonsense.

The bungie response makes sense to me. It's a multiplayer game and they don't want reviews to be written about a game without other players in it.

The amount of love GAF has given destiny sold me on pre-ordering. At this point I don't really care if there are going to be reviews. It is usually pretty rare that there is a day 1 review from sources you trust. Halo games were supported long into their life and I'm sure Destiny will be too.

I'm not actually sure this is an issue, it's an online service as well as a game so it's only fair that the fully functional service gets it's due. I mean most of use played the alpha or the beta by now and know that the game itself is fun.

It all comes down to how well the servers hold up and how much content there actually is.

If this were single player and offline I'd be concerned but it isn't either of those things so whatever. At least we won't see polygon giving it a 10/10 that magically becomes a 4/10 when it's too late to matter a month later (cough cough simcity reboot cough hack).

I would be lying if I said I wasn't worried about content

Get the worry out of the way then. If by content you mean, a sprawling game with vast areas to explore etc. then you are probably going to be a bit disappointed. You have Earth which I would wager has about 30-40% more area that we haven't seen. The Moon which will have less area than the Earth. Venus and Mars which will have an explorable area that is close to the size of Earth.

If by content you mean things to do including PvP, Strikes, Raids, Gear grind, etc. then you are going to be fine.

No doubt I wish the areas were much more vast, I suppose the A/B changed my perspective of what I liked about the game.

IDK, somehow TF keeps popping up, just trying to understand what is and isn't, and what I'm getting is this is in the same field.
I think its a similar situation. We will see after release if Destiny will be another victim of the hype monster. Somehow I doubt it will be.

Bullshit. Go read the ign preview again. The hyperbole surrounding Titanfall pre-launch is completely at odds with the response of actual players upon buying the game. That's a big hint.

This game, on the other hand, has a crazy amount of positive impressions from an alpha and a beta. The media has not built the game up, fans of the game have. Completely, 100% not the same situation at all.

But you already know that.

IIRC, people were impressed with TF after the beta and fueled its own hype to a certain degree.

Edit: it was the full release that fell short of expectations with TF and a lot of people fear the same with Destiny.
I don't

Beta didn't tell me how much content is there
What I mean to say is that those that played should be able to decide whether or not they'd be interested in playing more of it whether there's say 10 hours of content or 40 or more. Though given the intended replayable nature of the game it would be a huge oversight on Bungie's part to ship it with a dearth of content.
Hell no, I played the Alpha and the Beta and I have absolutely no idea. In fact, Destiny is about the most unsure I've been about any major game in a long, long time.

On one hand, it feels like PSO reborn as an FPS, which is great. On the other hand, I'm not particularly a fan of Bungie and the way they make games. So I have no idea.
You like it, but don't like Bungie's track record? So you have reservations and that's understandable. Still I've gotta ask: what exactly would put you off at this point if you already like it?
My buddy and I were just saying this.

Also, how would reviewers be able to accurately review a MMO game when there is only a tiny pool of journalists to party with? Destiny is a product that requires a large user base, so I seems unfair to judge its worth without one.
It makes sense considering the game plays really well with co-op in mind especially with the Strikes and what not. If you really have reserves, just hold off for impressions/reviews.

I just know someone is gonna try to burn through the game in the first week.

True, but the beta was after the media hype train. I don't remember ANY media hype train for Destiny. It seemed like everyone was down on it until the alpha, whereas Titanfall was hyped as the second coming of Jesus as soon as it was shown.

And no, TF was not a bad game. I'm just pointing out that it's pretty disingenuous to say this is the same thing. Seems like a desperate way to try and score imaginary points in the warz, TBH.

Why do I need professional reviews anyway...all we do is pick them apart..they are rushed, incomplete views of games...

GAF and reddit will provide far better feedback.

I dont see this being a purchase for me, I found the alpha/beta kinda dull.

We'll talk more about this in the update, but we did explore simulating a vibrant pre-launch population by giving early access to some fictive group, employing hired resources, and/or raising an army of sentient, killer robots. Ultimately, given that most reviewers are going to need to spend time with Destiny in the real world, under real conditions, we opted to have reviewers play alongside real players.

I believe in Bungie.

This is True. If anything the Destiny alpha is what began the hype train.

I still do cringe when I see quotes like "its more than a game" for Destiny. It feels very Titanfallish with the hyperbole sometimes from the media.

For the record, I love Destiny and have never played TF.

Bungie have become the most pompous development team in the games industry.

Since Halo 3 it's just one "we're better than you" smart-ass remark after another.

Really? I never got that about them at all. I also love the fact that they engage their fans better than most Devs.

Where are you getting that impression from? As far as I'm aware, they've been fairly humble throughout the years, even though they can get hyperbolic in their marketing
why wouldn't they?
and will dance around a lot of topics regardless of the concern surrounding them until their self-imposed NDAs allow them to do-so.

If anything, they are among the best in community engagement.

Me either, but this is their work for sure.

This guy.

My statement was laced with sarcasm, there is no way I was being serious. Activision is not developing this game high speed, Bungie is, and I trust them to do the right thing just as you should.

Pretty much, "Dont doubt our word even though you cant actually go there and we still haven't detailed a lot about our game that comes out in a week, and if you do, fuck off. We have our $500M :^)"

I'll be waiting for the reviews whenever they come to see how much content it actually has.

Eh, I will give them that they were one of the first to do it, but I'd say a lot of AAA devs are definitely at the same level of fan interaction.

I am pretty sure Bungie said they are not turning on the servers for the game until 00:00 PST September 9th.

Because I remember seeing a big uproar about it on the Bungie forums because well its midnight release... So here in the UK we need to wait until 4-5am to play a game we just bought.

So them not giving access to the press means the servers won't be on until ours are. So if people do get the game early they will be in the same spot as everyone else.

Which since it is an MMO based game is a smart move.

After the alpha? I'd never been more hyped for a game.

Basically every week since there has been more bummer news.

At this point I'd be surprised if the base game wasn't kinda shit overall.

Only 5 areas?
No matchmaking for raids?
Low Level cap?
No more gun types than in alpha?

It's like half a game.

Dude, they don't need to world to be filled with people. This aint a friggin traditional MMO.

Your only in groups of like up to 8 at a time.

That excuse isn't a viable one here.
