COMICS! |OT| September 2014. Means well, but is easily distracted and can get lost.

Yeah let's get angry! What were they supposed to do? The comic was probably completely finished and part of the overall storyline moving forward before the Ferguson events ever took place. Is nobody allowed to make a work of fiction about police after something in the news is about police? It's not too much of a stretch to say that the comic is completely unrelated.

Edit: That said, Punisher #10 was not as good as the last few issues. Looking forward to more...

Which is why I said "release", not "make". I get that stories happen and stuff. I'm still PRETTY SURE, that, even if it was already done and printed, Marvel could've done something to push back its release to a later time. Ferguson happened almost a month ago, I don't feel it's too unreasonably short a time to delay a comic that deals with those same issues, especially when it does so in this particular way.

For fuck's sake, the only way it could've been more disgusting is if it had nothing but DARREN WILSON WAS RIGHT printed on every page.

Hush Beyond.

The comics are a continuation of the BTAS->Beyond cartoon timeline so either watching those or reading up on the series will help.

Like I said earlier, my local con was very fruitful for Beyond stuff. I seem to have gotten all the trades but a Superman Beyond (forgot to look for it, is it good?) and the second Justice League Beyond.

Did I do good?

You gotta be careful with Superman Beyond because there is one that is tied to Final Crisis and not the Beyond Universe (not that it's bad, just unrelated). Also, I don't believe the second JL Beyond is out yet.

But yes! You did well. If you enjoyed the heart and fun of the DCAU then you should enjoy it. It's a fine continuation of it.

The one thing I don't understand about cons is when people say they bought something which can still be found at retail. Are the prices that much better than Amazon and IST, or is it just an impulse buy from being at a con?

Like, when we go to comic con I won't be focusing on retail books, I'll be going for exlusives and prints.

I know Cheska will order that shit yesterday as soon as she sees it. XD

Hahaha! You are correct sir :)

All of my IST orders have finally shipped too. It seems like they've caught up to all the massive orders they were getting. I bet we've netted them at least 25% more business through this thread alone :P

I've found it to be a mixture of impulse purchasing combined with crazy sales as the con winds down. I picked up most of the Legion Archives for like 75% off on the last day of the show.

GUYS GUYS GUYS. I JUST FINISHED DOOM PATROL. THAT WAS INCREDIBLE.
I'M ALL BROKEN. HOW DO I PROCESS THIS.

How did you guys interpret that ending!? I just can't accept the fact that everything that happened was in Jane's imagination. My interpretation is that the Candlemaker did send her to hell, and the hell he sent her to was one without any imagination or excitement or "alive and significant" (as Kay/Jane's shrink described these worlds of the mentally unwell patients) and where the world she knew was only in her mind, making her seem crazy. And then the ending would be that Danny took Cliff between the worlds and picked her up from the "hell" and brought her back to the "normal" world.
Of course, that's really the same explanation as the one I don't want to accept where the world in that last issue is the normal world and it was all in Jane's imagination. If both worlds do exist, then surely the world in that last issue where everything is normal and sane and boring and lifeless is supposed to represent our own. That doesn't mean that the world Jane was dreaming of wasn't just as real though. For some reason it really matters to me which one is the main world and which one is the crazy world or hell (depending on which was the main world), even though if they both exist alongside one another the distinction is meaningless.
Sorry, I don't really have a conclusion for that, I was mostly just letting my thoughts spill out. But I'd love to hear your thoughts on that ending. That was an incredibly thought-provoking ending.

Other thoughts:

That second to last issue in particular was so great. Everything about it was just incredible reading.

And I can't decide if Cliff or Dorothy is my favorite character. They were both so well written.

Anyways, I didn't check out the bonus material yet (to whoever I told earlier that it didn't look like there was bonus material, I was wrong. There seems to be about 20 pages of bonus stuff) nor did I read the annual, but I'll definitely get to those in a bit. Gotta go for a bike ride and let that ending process a bit more. Haha

Also, going through boxes and whatnot has to be fruitless, because I assume most of the vendors know what they're selling. I doubt you'd get a copy of something like Giant Sized X-Men for $5, and that's the kind of book I'd be looking for.

Congrats on the IST orders shipping, guys. :P
Meanwhile, my order that shipped over a week ago is still hanging out in Florida, further away from me than it was before it was shipped.

That also depends on what you're looking for. My friend, for example, looks for "What ifs?" and things like that, that arent commanding huge dollar signs but scratch a fun itch.

I've gotten good deals through negotiating their prices. One time I wanted the whole PAD run that they had bundled and as I was processing how I'd pay for it the vendor just knocked an extra $20. Other times I'll find stuff that I haven't seen anywhere or just eBay. And eBay vs in person I'll go in person.

But for the most part I'm there for things like shirts, art work, posters, etc

Another stupid question, cash or credit? I don't want to try to throw my debit card around at NYCC and get shot down and fuck myself over.

Is Johns run on JSA worth a read? I've heard he co-wrote it with Goyer (who also did the early issues with Robinson) so I'm a tad hesitant to jump in. Also is the Ennis Hitman series good? I have access to to the trades so i was thinking about giving it a bash after seeing someone post a really good superman panel on /co/.

yes they're both excellent. Goyer & Robinson's early issues are good so don't have that deter you. And John's JSA run is amazing. One of the best super hero team runs ever. One omnibus is out and another is on the way

You actually will occasionally find something that's at least moderately rare in those boxes, as a number of the retailers seem to just be clearing bulk stock from somewhere. I wasn't necessarily looking for anything rare comic wise, but as an example one of the booths at my local con had a shelf of manga for like a few bucks a pop, and it contained a ton of the later xxxHolic volumes that are now at around $50 on Amazon. (Didn't grab any because I didn't need them personally and I'm not really much for flipping stuff).

Also, there's definitely some deals on retail books. Like, most places at my con had either $5 or 50% off bins, and you could definitely find some stuff with even better deals then that. Plus like I said I bought a ton of manga as I found a place that was $5 for anything (including a ton of stuff that retails for more than $10), and one place that went so far as to have 4 for $10. I mean you definitely have to be wary and not get caught up in stuff and stupidly overpay (my local anime con is far bigger, and most of the booths there have crap deals like %20 off or even "we cover the tax for you!" that are easily beaten out online, but even there there are deals), but you can also save a lot of money picking stuff up at a con.

But flipping through boxes is definitely a pain as I mentioned earlier, especially when booths don't alphabetize and longbox everything so you have to flip past each individual book, and then they overfill them so it's hard to just casually flip. And then of course there's just so many repeats of the same crap like movie tie-ins that nobody wants. I remember a few years where every bin had like at least 5 copies of Essential Thing and just nobody wanted that at all.

My interpretation.

The hell that the Candlemaker sent Jane to is the "real world". Parallel to that, there is now Danny the World. It comes down to the interpretation that the "real world" (our world) seems to have no place for misfits like Jane,Cliff, Rebis and Dorothy. They had to leave it behind and go into Danny the World to have a happy life. Dorothy couldn't take that step, so she moved back to the real world. :(

It takes about a week yeah. Except Freeza he always has a mildly sexual animu character.
I'm gonna use waifus for my avatars from now on
I see Superior Foes and Shazam. You did good.

I agree that Crazy Jane/Kay was basically sent to her version of hell, but in this case, her hell is the real world. Danny had grown into its own world that was the perfect place for outcasts like the Doom Patrol so they decided to bring her there and stay. Dorothy wanted to live a more normal life (after her powers caused so many incidents, she probably felt very guilty and afraid) and chose to return to the real world.

I decided to look up some other theories and explanations to the ending and came across this article, which does a great job at interpreting the ending and what Morrison was going for. I personally love the idea of Morrison using the Doom Patrol to challenge the idea of the status quo in superhero comics.

Right,
Jane got sent to "our" world, where its all brown and boring and doesn't accept weirdos like the Doom Patrol, and Cliff took her to comic book world of Danny the Street. So its a bit bittersweet, cuz they got their happy ending, but the "real" world will never accept them

If this sounds a lot like Multiversity, its because he's been writing this story for 20 years now

So my birthday is coming up soon (9/8!) but I had a celebratory lunch and mini party at work yesterday. Got some great gifts, some laughs and was in good company. Got off of work feeling happy and on my way home I get rear ended. :/ At first glance, it didn't seem like there was any damage but upon further inspection, there might be a lot more including frame damage. The 80-year old guy rammed me with his Jeep Grand Cherokee while I was stopped at a stop light. He said he didn't stop soon enough which was why he hit me. I experienced a bit of whiplash but the pain is not that bad. Anyway, my hatch/trunk is all f***** up (I drive a GTI); where the edge of the hatch meets the bumper is where it was con-caved in and everything there was pushed up a bit. My hatch doesn't close properly, the open/close sensor is jacked up, my bumper became unhinged, there's a huge dent on the hatch itself just below the rear emblem, and my car alarm doesn't function properly for some reason (probably because the trunk is "open" and my lock can't be initiated by the key fob because of it, so I have to manually lock it). Luckily, my son wasn't with me at the time. I made my claim yesterday and noted that I do have an infant car seat that was in the car but wasn't damaged (California law says it'll have to be replaced regardless if it was damaged or not since it was in an accident). *sigh* I just hope my car isn't totaled from the frame being pushed up but I guess we'll see when my insurance rep calls me on Monday.

Alright, comic time.

Storm #1

I liked what I read here, if only because I see this more as a one-shot than a groundwork of an ongoing series. In this issue, Storm has to deal with the politics surrounding human/mutant affairs, a troubled student and, more importantly, herself. She's full of pride and it shows through her actions as she weaves in and out of conflicts. I'm not interested in seeing what Greg Pak plans to do with this ongoing but I just don't see Storm as a strong character to keep writing about, let alone keep readers interested enought to peek in. This is a solid one-shot even if it's not called that.

I have a Marvel digital code for Storm #1, first person to reply requesting it will get my PM. I still have Rocket Raccoon #2 as well if anyone wants that.

Yes to both.

PM'd

On one hand, I'm interested. On the other, if I'm correct, I have to make accounts on Marvel's website and Comixology in order to read it on my computer.

Can someone correct me if I'm wrong?

You just have to make a Marvel account in order to redeem the code. You can link your Comixology account (if you have one already or you can create one) so that any Marvel digital codes you've redeemed at Marvel can also be read through Comixology.

Thanks, in that case, I'll take that Rocket Raccoon code.

I probably have one, since I bought the issue. Never used these digital codes, so where's it supposed to be?

I'm at work, so PM me to remind me to send it to you. If it's in the book.

There should be a page with a sticker on it that you peel off to reveal the code

And I'm sorry to hear about what happened, Bii. But the important thing is that your son wasn't with you and he's okay!

Danny
the World
was probably my most favourite sequence of it all. IIRC Brendan McCarthy (co-creator of Danny) wanted to add him to the Green Lantern Corps in Solo 12 but didn't get round to it.

All of this...

Wait... Now I'm even more confused. Before I hopped back on the computer to read all the replies, I thought I'd gotten it all sorted out, but now I don't even know. Haha
There have to be three worlds, right? Danny the World, the world that the rest of the run takes place in, and the real world (or "hell"). Because Jane is taken to a new world when the Candlemaker sends her to hell, and Danny creates a new world that's more magical than the world that the rest of the comic takes place in, but he doesn't turn the current world into that because Danny the Street is used as the portal between Danny the World and what Rebis says is "our old world" (which can't be "hell" because Jane was sent to a different world and she was currently on the "old world"). So that's three worlds, yeah?

Either way, I definitely get the ending more now. After thinking about it, I realized the whole "IT WAS ALL A DREAM" thing definitely didn't happen (I originally thought maybe it could've been interpreted like that). After skimming the last issue again though, I realized that the shrink says that Jane appeared out of nowhere (and disappeared not to be found, but that could be explained by jumping off a bridge), which makes it clear that she was actually teleported onto this other world by the Candlemaker and actually was picked up by Cliff and Danny (rather than hallucinating that, which I thought could've been the case in the "IT WAS ALL A DREAM" theory). So that's good.

I guess the only thing I'm slightly confused by still is what world is what, but that doesn't really matter that much, and I am pretty sure that there are the three separate worlds.

I agree that Crazy Jane/Kay was basically sent to her version of hell, but in this case, her hell is the real world. Danny had grown into its own world that was the perfect place for outcasts like the Doom Patrol so they decided to bring her there and stay. Thanks for explaining that Dorothy page to me. That was one thing I didn't quite understand. That makes a lot of sense.
And thanks for that article! I'll definitely give that a read in a bit.

Haha yes. That was so great.

And two other Doom Patrol thoughts unrelated to the other stuff:

- That last page is really powerful. After I finished, I think I stared at that page for like three minutes just thinking about it. Haha

-
I just loved that one line of dialogue between Cliff and Dorothy when Cliff asked Dorothy what she knew about the Candlemaker and she starts explaining it: "I got the idea from the butcher, the baker, and the candlemaker." "It was the candleSTICK maker, Dorothy. The butcher, the baker, and the candleSTICK maker." "Oh."
It's such a great combination of Cliff being hilariously pedantic in such a serious, crazy situation and also might be implying the fact that the reason this horrible creature that was bringing about the end of the world existed was because Dorothy simply misremembered the name "candlestick maker."

In my mind, after finishing Doom Patrol, Kipp quietly got up to take a shot of whiskey and then walked outside to watch the sunrise with a faraway look in his eyes.

Who isn't at this rate.

Has harley ever been in any beyond series? Or Catwoman.

Harley was in
Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. She made a small appearance at the end. The Dee Dee sisters are actually Harley's Granddaughters. In one episode of Justice League Unlimited, they actually manage to kill Terry. That was something.

In my mind, after finishing Doom Patrol, Kipp quietly got up to take a shot of whiskey and then walked outside to watch the sunrise with a faraway look in his eyes.

You know, the mood was right. I could see that as a possibility. Alternate universe Kipp probably did that.
I'm glad my posts are properly conveying my feelings. Haha

I did finish the last issue pretty much right at sunrise, too.
