COMICS! |OT| September 2014. Means well, but is easily distracted and can get lost.

Yup that's Rucka's M.O in almost any book he writes. Which is funny how the OT still seems spun up on the silly spider woman variant cover and the messages it sends. Meanwhile Ruck just kills it with book after book. Hell even when he takes on a male lead book he sneaks in a female main character (see Batmans bodyguard and his punisher run)

I've been wanting for the LONGEST time to make a thread in OT to encourage femaleGAF to give his books a read but I couldn't think of a proper thread title that wouldn't read strange or be written in a way that'd interest femaleGAF.

...apologies if femaleGAF sounds offensive btw >_>;

How about something like: Meet Greg Rucka -your guide to well written females in comics

Then have an op with pics and recaps of Whiteout, Wonder woman, Batwoman from 'Tec, Stumptown, Queen & country, Gotham central, Lazarus, checkmate, punisher, Electra, etc.

I'm kind of a huge fan of Rucka's and will buy any book he writes. For some on this board people go nuts for Morrison but Rucka is my guy.

Edit: and then you also have Terry Moore that also writes great books that always have excellent female main characters

I need to read more of Rucka's work as I've only read a few dozen of them so far.
That's a good thread title tho.

He also wrote Superman and it had Lupe'.

I seriously can't believe Marvel looked at Punisher #10 after the events in Ferguson and didn't think "yeah, no, now is maybe not the time to release a comic where a white man calls mexican people thugs who only deserve to be killed while his lady cop friends shoots a guy in the back, and is portrayed during her disciplinary hearing as being needed because otherwise the city would fall into chaos".

It is seriously the grossest fucking thing I have ever fucking read. It is vile. It is disgusting.

Well... wouldn't they have locked the story in way before Ferguson happened? I dunno if you can really fault Marvel/Edmondson for a bad coincidental timing.

Hey guys.

Make it.

The only problem I have with it is that it's really not up to dudes to tell women what kind of books they should be reading. I understand that you guys may be trying to open up the hobby to others, but just because a girl is well written doesn't mean a girl has to like it and have it as their introduction to comics.

My girlfriend thinks that Velvet is stupid, and loves Batman.

You could just make a "well-written, non-hyper-sexualized females in comics" thread which is secretly basically a Rucka thread in disguise.

Man, I loooove Rucka.

Yo, Johns' Superman is fucking great. I haven't been interested in a solo Superman book in a minute, but this is a great start. It's kind of shocking that this is the same dude writing the current Justice League, because that's pretty bad.
It's really the best. my favorite ongoing superhero book at the moment.

Yeah for real

My main intentions with it would be To get more people interested in Rucka's work, I doubt our intention is even 'forced', but if you ask me, Rucka is one of the few authors I've read who writes some good strong and interesting female characters.

Honestly if I would make that thread (highly unlikely) it wouldn't be geared towards comics for women. That's a minefield I would want no part of. Like my suggested title states, it's Greg Rucka a writer that writes great female characters. It would be more to positively expose non comic readers in general to good books that might break their stereotypes of comics. Similar to the hawkeye thread a while back

...I still haven't read anything by Rucka. One of a few pretty scary omissions in my comics reading history.

Well you now know you need to fix that after your Doom patrol journey. If you need help, I'll be your guide :)

And wow one issue into this fourth world omnibus and I'm already hooked. I'm feeling the urge to do kipp level chronicles of each issue! Purchase validated already!

What do you recommend I start with? I've been meaning to read Gotham Central for a long time and the trades are pretty good value, so that's what I'm leaning towards.

And you should totally do it. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Fourth World stuff. I'm pretty interested in reading those books.

Kipp is literally the worst ;_;

Literally.

Current Johns is at his best when he only has one character to write and build a world around.

Well there's no bad way to start to be honest. But Gotham central is a great way to start. It's the great swan song of Rucka and Brubaker on the bat titles. It's like the show homicide life on the street merged with batman into this great new thing. Make sure to get the new printings of the run. They're four in total. The old printings would skip issues and only do arcs. They all have a uniform style cover http://www.instocktrades.com/TP/DC/GOTHAM-CENTRAL-VOL-1-IN-THE-LINE-OF-DUTY-TP/DEC100248

Would I like Doom Patrol? Are there any strong female characters?
I have a feeling you wouldn't get into it honestly. And Crazy Jane is fucking awesome.

Yeah for real, it's so good. I don't read a lot of Superman but I'm loving it. I'm really excited for the future of it.

So thanks to some suggestions on Nova material I've consumed and consumed up until the Annihilation story and I'm loving it.
Just got to the part where Galactus has been weaponized and Nova is about to go off on a suicide mission.
Really dig the big universe events with death everywhere. Anything else like it across either Marvel or DC?

Gotham Central's a good start even though it's Brubaker+Rucka =)

Rucka's Marvela dn DC stuff are good too.

Thanks guys! I've got a few other things I want to buy first (Sandman, more Hellboy, a couple other things), but Gotham Central is definitely up there on my priorities list.

Those other items on the list are also some of the best in comics.

So I'm two issues into Fourth world. Wow in the second issue of jimmy Olsen I just saw something done by Jack Kirby that I've never seen in comics. Talk about blowing my mind! I guess I'll go into details
that immediate switch to a black/whit mix media was stunning. I've seen David Mack and McKeen do mix media for comics but not like this. Then you've got this wild tree house, jimmy Olsen running a biker gang with the newsboy legion. I can't get my head around the scuba kid. Haha. And the last tease of darkseid starts to open up the larger story.
This jimmy Olsen book is crazy so far. Just an explosion of creativity and imagination. Some silly and absurd but others just fascinating. It feels like something morrison would look into doing which is interesting to read in the intro that Morrison wasn't a Kirby fan as a kid. That it wasn't until later as an adult he became a fan.

You should read Gotham Central yesterday.

I already have plans for yesterday. Sorry.

That's the best part about still being fairly new to comics. Even after cherry picking some the best comics for the past year, I still have a ton of the best comics left to read.

And I enjoyed reading those Fourth World thoughts! Keep em coming!

You'll come across that a few more times in the Fourth World, it was Kirby really cutting loose and going all out.

Yea I've been reading books for 20 years and still discovering great new reads. You're at a great time now. My reading horizons really expanded once the internet came along. Enjoy the ride

Can't wait. I didn't think these early issues with jimmy Olsen were going to be as enjoyable as they are. Makes me eager to see what else I have in store. I'm starting to finally see why he's regarded as the king.

Gotham Central is one of my all-time favorite books. It's great. Another easy Rucka read is his Punisher run, which is short and awesome.
Believe me, it's true. I know these things.
No doubt. And it's especially enjoyable as a big metal gear solid fan. Rucka just starts channeling big boss/snake into frank.

Yeah I can't imagine you expected it to start with Jimmy,
the Newsboy Legion, and the Hairies
. It's so bizarre, yet works perfectly in the narrative and is a great way to introduce bigger and crazier concepts.

Spike mentioned this a few pages back, I was laughing my ass off at his Marvel ideas notebook.

Oh woops. You guys have all been posting too fast today. I only had time to skim most of the posts and must've missed it. I guess this is where I turn in my badge...

The shame.

You should try one of his current books, Lazarus. It's only like 10 issues in, and they're all great. Plus, it has Michael Lark art.

Rucka noobs need to read Wonder Woman hiketeia and his punisher run.

Also batwomen
Well not just hiketeia nut his whole WW run. Hiketeia is the place to start but IMO his run is IMO the definitive run. Although I admit I haven't read Perezs WW yet. Either way it's damn good. And of course Batwoman is a no brainer. JG Williams + Rucka is an easy win
