I don't know. The A to B story here of the game is pretty rote, but the background world building is incredible, IMHO. I think they have a lot of potential to broaden its story.

I don't think the problem is the A to B story, so much. I mean, the individual sub plots (Warmind, for instance) can be fairly interesting conceptually, but they utterly fail to execute on them. No interesting characters, no interesting set pieces... your only interaction with the world is through a) shooting it and b) having it described to you by dinklebot. It makes for an experience that's somewhere between dull and actively awful.

Looks like they prioritized the multiplayer experience over telling story. If the story was driving you forward constantly you'd be less apt to bounce around missions and take a brake and go crucible. Not saying its a great move, but I can understand the approach

The thing is, why not structure it episodically? Each planet could have had a "season," with an overarching arc and key characters, with each mission playing the part of an "episode." In between, plenty of time to run around, and seasons would provide natural break points. Instead we've got this silly hodgepodge that doesn't ever really go anywhere.

Halo has a clearly communicated storyline and a well realized canon. 13 years, dozens of books and comics and animation and television productions don't come from a "bad story."

Eh, no.

These two things don't correlate the way you think they do.

Halo is popular.

Popular things sell alot.

Let's make more of that popular thing to sell!

to be fair the budget includes 3 games.

It's still really high =/

I've been super critical of Destiny for a while now but in a moment of weakness yesterday I succumbed to the hype and preordered the game. Luckily I came to my senses a few hours later and canceled. IF I still want to play the game, it looks like I should be able to pick up a cheap used copy in a week or so. The preorder bonuses appear to be garbage so I'm not even missing out on that.

Destiny has finally cured me of my preorder fever. I don't think I'll ever preorder a game again. You get the extra risk of buying a crappy game with very little upside. If Destiny had turned out to be happiness in physical form I could have ordered the digital version today and been playing within hours with little fuss.

you should start a blog, oh you did

None of this points to quality. The storytelling in everything except for Halo 1 was laughable. Halo 1 was good because it wasn't so in your face or trying so hard. The books and ties ins are whatever. Twilight is all over the place and guess what....

Agree to disagree.

Get them from Special Delivz, then they're on the second page of your Charac screen.

SPOILER!

THEY'RE LEVEL 20
Do you mean the special orders lady next to the postmaster? I went there and all I had were the emblems that I redeemed... no shaders to grab. Redeemed all the codes available.

Game is incredible so far. But I wanted to try a second class real quick, to make sure I know which one to commit to. Pretty annoying they force you to sit through all the cut scenes again after already having played the intro/tutorial section.

Ok guys. Me and my buddy have originally planned to wait for the Division to purchase a PS4 but this game is the only other one that could actually make or break our decision. So I'd like to ask: Can you play with your friends even though your levels are completely far apart or do they have to catch up to you for a co-op session?

I'm genuinely curious about this as well. Picking up my copy here soon.

I agree that the beta wasn't really a beta but more of a demo.

I thought it was pretty clear as Bungie was basically saying anyone could play the beta. As that was the case, I knew it wouldn't be your typical beta. If there were a ton of bugs, it would have turned a lot of people off from the game because they wouldn't understand what their "role" was in playing the beta.

I agree. I was more or less making the point that publishers are using the term "beta" to imply some kind of exclusive demo. while those who know what a true beta is would expect some improvements in the final version, not just "unlocking the rest of the content."

what the hell, there's NO audio options? Dinklage is yelling in my ear all the time way-way-way louder than my buddies in voice chat...

Why no audio volume slider? Amateur hour...

One of the things people gave as feedback during the beta. Also nothing done about being able to rotate your character during creation, such a basic option.

The impressions are about what I expected, nothing world changing but a good Bungie shooter to have fun with is just fine with me. Although I have to admit I'm a little bummed that Bungie didn't come up with something game changing like they did with matchmaking in Halo 2 or the theater/forge in Halo 3.

Realize for a moment what you just said. Halo TWO and Halo THREE. This is the first in what is to be a mega-franchise. The fact that they delivered such a highly polished game for their first just means they now have time to just build onto it.

This day is dragging along so bad. ONLY HALF DONE! Feels like its been a week.

That 2 hours this morning only made this worse. Augh. * cough *

I'm really liking it so far but it is kind of strange how you keep going back to the same area over and over again like you do. You'd think they'd at least start you in a different spot.

Game is structured to not do that though. Everything is stand alone because any mission can be done in any order any time. If you jump from fire team to fire team you could be anywhere and wouldn't know what's going on. Even the few intro cut scenes are a bit intrusive.

I don't know. Maybe a game could pull it off and have excellent always on mp while telling a key storyline with key beats, twists and characters. But it looks like they wanted to bite off the mp part first, which was a good idea to me.

Then again I am playing it like they want. Giving no fucks and going to the next challenge when available, jumping in and out of friend teams, and playing some control mixed in

The fact that you can go on a 10 kill streak and not kill all 3 classes is telling some are under represented.

No it's not. You're playing in a crucible match with 12 total people. That's way too small a sample size. There's millions playing...

I don't know why the game is getting so much shit for its story mode. I've yet to see a game of this type that has a good story. I know that the missions lack variety
a lot
but it's still good fun to do them if you have a good fireteam and the game has so much else to offer that I don't mind one aspect of it lacking.

Anyway for me the best part of the game has been the Crucible so far. It has certainly exceeded my expectations after being a bit doubtful during the alpha/beta.

And in case anyone was wondering like me, you start earning marks after level 18.

This thread is going too fast. Are people saying they've beaten the game already?

Unless someone has maxed out all three classes and explored all the content on the highest difficulty then there's still more to do. Even then, there's still the Crucible.

Edit: considering the raid isn't live yet, exploring all the content is impossible

A lot of the complaints here are funny... Did you guys complaining about the story and mission structure and what not play the beta?

Those issues were all there and apparent for everyone to see in the beta.

That's what I expected to hear. The canon sounded interesting in the run up to release, and this isn't Bungie's first rodeo.

I feel like this is kind of standard with video games like this. VG writers/designers are incredible at building rich and fascinating worlds. Shit, even Gears of War I was like "Tell me everything that happened to make this happen, I am SO hooked." Mass Effect, same deal.

They tend to play out like blockbuster movie shlock (but fun), but running in the background you can see the fruits of hours of super smart and creative people sitting in front of a white board thinking up the coolest possible shit.

VENUS SPOILERS

"I don't know, how about rusted out cars. ON THE SURFACE OF VENUS."

I can see how people are unimpressed by this game, but just being able to walk through that kind of creative endeavor is really special to me, and frankly, pretty rare these days.

I only played up to the mission where you get your Sparrow. I'm loving it, even though everything is the same as the beta so far. Auto rifles do have more recoil and hand cannons feel better to use. Up for some Fire team action later today?
I might, sure. Can't stay up too late though as I gotta wake up early for Gamestop's convention in Anaheim.

That's why I hate situational luck-based achievements. Bungie loved them for Halo and they drove me crazy then as well.

Ugh... I need someone to play with. Solo is mediocre unfortunately =(

Any Xboners looking to team up? -- GT Izuna Lasky

I'll hit you up later tonight (after the initial intro and what not) if you want.

Speaking of which, how does this game handle players with major level deviations?

One of those two postman people in that kiosk. There's one on each side. P. sure that's where I got them. OR shoot, maybe it was from the Vanguard dude by your spaceship.

SHOW ME YOUR GRIMOIRE LEVELS IF YOU THINK YOU DONE

;D

So apparently if you don't see the Bungie.net emblems, you're just permanently SOL on that front.

Nobody within my group of friends got their Bnet emblems.

:/

Didn't humanity terraform Venus during the golden age? Why
wouldn't there be cars on Venus?
