It's obvious an incredible amount of effort and resources has gone into developing this game. If Destiny gets less than a 90 average on Metacritic I will be seriously f*cking pissed.

Remind me how this was supposed to be a landmark for gaming again?
Or did enough to justify the $500m budget for the IP? Or be the next billion dollar franchise?
I don't know. The A to B story here of the game is pretty rote, but the background world building is incredible, IMHO. I think they have a lot of potential to broaden its story.
Looks like they prioritized the multiplayer experience over telling story. If the story was driving you forward constantly you'd be less apt to bounce around missions and take a brake and go crucible. Not saying its a great move, but I can understand the approach
Halo has a clearly communicated storyline and a well realized canon. 13 years, dozens of books and comics and animation and television productions don't come from a "bad story."
to be fair the budget includes 3 games.
I've been super critical of Destiny for a while now but in a moment of weakness yesterday I succumbed to the hype and preordered the game. Luckily I came to my senses a few hours later and canceled. IF I still want to play the game, it looks like I should be able to pick up a cheap used copy in a week or so. The preorder bonuses appear to be garbage so I'm not even missing out on that.
Destiny has finally cured me of my preorder fever. I don't think I'll ever preorder a game again. You get the extra risk of buying a crappy game with very little upside. If Destiny had turned out to be happiness in physical form I could have ordered the digital version today and been playing within hours with little fuss.
None of this points to quality. The storytelling in everything except for Halo 1 was laughable. Halo 1 was good because it wasn't so in your face or trying so hard. The books and ties ins are whatever. Twilight is all over the place and guess what....
As I said that it literally booted me from the server. Oops! But it let me back in right away. I'm in Australia so probably different servers. I'm on PS4.
Do you mean the special orders lady next to the postmaster? I went there and all I had were the emblems that I redeemed... no shaders to grab. Redeemed all the codes available.Get them from Special Delivz, then they're on the second page of your Charac screen.
SPOILER!
THEY'RE LEVEL 20
Damn, where do you people find all this green gear?
Ok guys. Me and my buddy have originally planned to wait for the Division to purchase a PS4 but this game is the only other one that could actually make or break our decision. So I'd like to ask: Can you play with your friends even though your levels are completely far apart or do they have to catch up to you for a co-op session?
I agree that the beta wasn't really a beta but more of a demo.
I thought it was pretty clear as Bungie was basically saying anyone could play the beta. As that was the case, I knew it wouldn't be your typical beta. If there were a ton of bugs, it would have turned a lot of people off from the game because they wouldn't understand what their "role" was in playing the beta.
Go to the post person in the Tower and collect them. Level 20 I believe is required to then use them my friend.

This thread is going too fast. Are people saying they've beaten the game already?
what the hell, there's NO audio options? Dinklage is yelling in my ear all the time way-way-way louder than my buddies in voice chat...
Why no audio volume slider? Amateur hour...
The impressions are about what I expected, nothing world changing but a good Bungie shooter to have fun with is just fine with me. Although I have to admit I'm a little bummed that Bungie didn't come up with something game changing like they did with matchmaking in Halo 2 or the theater/forge in Halo 3.

story is 10 hours long??? Did I read that right?
I don't think the problem is the A to B story, so much. I mean, the individual sub plots (Warmind, for instance) can be fairly interesting conceptually, but they utterly fail to execute on them. No interesting characters, no interesting set pieces... your only interaction with the world is through a) shooting it and b) having it described to you by dinklebot. It makes for an experience that's somewhere between dull and actively awful.
The thing is, why not structure it episodically? Each planet could have had a "season," with an overarching arc and key characters, with each mission playing the part of an "episode." In between, plenty of time to run around, and seasons would provide natural break points. Instead we've got this silly hodgepodge that doesn't ever really go anywhere.

The fact that you can go on a 10 kill streak and not kill all 3 classes is telling some are under represented.

That's what I expected to hear. The canon sounded interesting in the run up to release, and this isn't Bungie's first rodeo.

I might, sure. Can't stay up too late though as I gotta wake up early for Gamestop's convention in Anaheim.I only played up to the mission where you get your Sparrow. I'm loving it, even though everything is the same as the beta so far. Auto rifles do have more recoil and hand cannons feel better to use. Up for some Fire team action later today?

Ugh... I need someone to play with. Solo is mediocre unfortunately =(

Gonna need a retailer and purchase date on that guide, champ.
To put that $500 million in context, thats the whole entirety of the game. Thats development, manufacturing, marketing and so forth, he said. It sounds like a big amount but it doesnt just fuel one aspect.

Unless someone has maxed out all three classes and explored all the content on the highest difficulty then there's still more to do. Even then, there's still the Crucible.
Edit: considering the raid isn't live yet, exploring all the content is impossible
I feel like this is kind of standard with video games like this. VG writers/designers are incredible at building rich and fascinating worlds. Shit, even Gears of War I was like "Tell me everything that happened to make this happen, I am SO hooked." Mass Effect, same deal.
They tend to play out like blockbuster movie shlock (but fun), but running in the background you can see the fruits of hours of super smart and creative people sitting in front of a white board thinking up the coolest possible shit.
VENUS SPOILERS
"I don't know, how about rusted out cars. ON THE SURFACE OF VENUS."
I can see how people are unimpressed by this game, but just being able to walk through that kind of creative endeavor is really special to me, and frankly, pretty rare these days.
