Bungie speaks out on Destiny review delay.

It's an online only game. It should be played in the wild for review conditions. Even if that assumption of yours is true, I think it was a positive step. We as gamers should stop falling for the preorder culture and should discourage the practices that encourage it, including multiplayer games being played outside of the context of what the consumers would encounter.

Nonsense.

The honeymoon period isn't even going to happen - people are seeing how drab and boring this game is on day one. A month or 2 of bad word of mouth and this game will be a ghost town in no time.

A lot of people already had reservations during the beta but they were promptly shot down by the hordes of people blinded by the artificial hype train.

This is gonna get an average of about 7.5 from the gaming media i reckon.

The gunplay is fun and the game is strangely addicting for how little there is to actually do. There is no setpieces just the same old fight to this point, scan with ghost whilst defend him move on to the end to fight a more major enemy.

There is no story from what i have played so far. just excuses to move you onto different planets. There needs to be vehicular combat in the sp. that is missed.

Dont see the point of upgrading your spaceship or sparrow its like they had space combat and sparrow battles and then just decided to throw it all out or hold off until the expansion packs.

Game feels majorly unfinished content wise but im addicted to it and having fun. Is a strange one.

You know, I played through Borderlands 1 & 2, and absolutely loved them both. The story in those games are laughable. Same with Diablo 3. And honestly, Halo's story past the 1st one was laughable to me too. But that doesn't mean one thing in the amount of fun I had in those games.

The co-op experience makes up for it. I never expected this game to be something I went back for the story. I go back for the fun.

Well a lot of the complaints then were looked over due to it being a beta, and that we still didn't know much about the full game then. Now? What you see is what you get, there's no explaining away the faults.

At least having humans running around gives some illusion of intelligence in the world.

Destiny's AI is broken to non-existant. Enemies aren't smart at all, 100% of any (very little) challenge comes from being a) mobbed by a lot of enemies at once from every direction or b) bosses/sub-bosses who do ridiculous AoE damage (like the tank thing).

Enemies will face the wrong direction, run towards you from too far, randomly take cover or break from cover for no apparent reason, elite enemies (knights, wizards etc.) for the most part simply stand out in the wide open then warp a short distance away after taking damage.

The worst are thralls, an enemy that simply runs at you to melee isn't awful in theory, but they only chase you a hilariously small distance before they will literally stop and walk backwards while facing you. Bungie can't even get the most basic, purposefully braindead AI correct/to play well with the game design.

Would be hilarious if it wasn't so sad. Still I bought the Digital CE after having all these concerns with the beta, so I'm as much a problem as everyone else who bought into the hype.

Good job this game came for free with the PS4, not sure if would have got it full-price, having said that I never tried any of the Beta's Alpha's etc...so it'll be the 1st time I am playing it..

Man am I glad I held back.

This was to be the game I would buy a next-gen system for.

I had my doubts about this being a overhyped giant grindfest, a broken game, and it turned out to be true :/

A publisher/developer won't hold back positive reviews on launch day ...

How exactly is it broken?

Man, playing this game solo... then playing this game co-op...night and day. I was having a "good" time playing solo. Not great, not bad... some fun to be had.

...then my brother and a friend and I joined up in a Fireteam, and did the first Strike on Hard-mode. Holy hell. The game leapt in difficulty and fun, and I played for about 8 hours straight, not even realizing it. That very rarely happens anymore for me...

At the end of the day, the game is exactly what the alpha and beta presented it to be, except more of it. If you liked the alpha and beta, you'll like the game... if not, you won't. Sure, there's not as much content as like FFXIV or WoW, but there's WAY more content than probably well north of half the games that are released nowadays.

Okay.

Lower would be my guess. ~80 sounds about right. Some people are going to hate this game.

Just started last night. Haven't played Alpha or Beta, didn't watch any previews and basically went in cold.

Only 2 hours in so waaaay too early to tell, but it doesn't seem to be groundbreaking in any way. Borderlands hooked me in more... Gonna go hard today.

the AI isn't broken. just because types of enemies follow roughly the same AI patterns doesn't mean it's broken.

I've actually had a few encounters where the AI surprised me at how well it seemed to recognize the level design and outsmart me.

I'm not sure how it's a broken game...

Alrighty there, bub.

I have to say this is kind of how I'm feeling as well, and I was not on the hype train at all. Just thought it looked interesting enough to have some co-op fun. I kinda disagree about the 7.5 though. I suspect it's still going to garner an average in the 8's. I can imagine some members of the media being a little afraid to grade this game in the 7's for a lot of reasons.

So this thing sets record preorders, Sony's treating it like first party, and then reviews get delayed and it turns out to be vanilla fare?

Now, Bungie's games have never done much for me, but this sounds borderline scandalous.

to all y'all:

*broken -> *broken record game
There, I fixed it

but I still can't buy a next-gen system :(

What are you saying?

Do you expect them to introduce new gameplay design every other level?

You are just looking for excuses, no?

Wow, really? Really?

So I've been scouring the internet for the time the embargo lifts, but I'll be damned if I can find anything. Or is the embargo up and the reviews are delayed because the press didn't get review copies?

You're still insisting ?

This game is repetitive and a grindfest.
It does not live up to what it was hyped up to be.

Not repetitive, borderline braindead repetitive (ha, border- borderlands ! get it?)

Even an indie UE3 FPS game has more varied gameplay than this.

This. I don't understand the comments on this game apparently having smart ai :/

I was so tempted to get a console for this, I believed the hype. Glad I held off for a bit longer and decided to watch some twitch vids. I dont believe that they held off reviews for the reasons they are saying. Its funny hearing most of the pre reviews on websites. There almost afraid to criticise it(more due to fan backslash I expect). But first impressions are still impressions.

Its amazing what they can do with a bit of advertising and hype.

Didn't like the alpha or beta, but with nothing to play until bayo2 I bought it.

Single player is "meh" but i am enjoying the multiplayer. This will definitely fall on the high 7s, low 8s range as far as reviews go. It's a start but a missed opportunity, will be interesting to see where they go with Destiny 2

I find it hard to believe that a game with this level of barren community features requires a few days of millions playing to get the "real feel". Well, their marketing worked. Game will probably sell 6 million+ right out of the gate no matter where it finally lands. I'll probably end up picking up the digital 360 version so I can get the One version for free, but I'm not expecting to be blown away (played neither the alpha nor beta).

It's funny. People on GAF lambast gaming journalists for being PR mouthpieces but they fall for the same PR bullshit themselves.

I'm not sure it's helpful to pick on GAF specifically, but I do find it fascinating when people assail gaming PR methods when they themselves are so heavily influenced by them (and not in a very self-aware way)

Hence the hype, people obviously believed it would get better.

..better? The game was 90 days from release or something.. people thought it would get better? The only sane expectation to be had for the full release was to have more content and to see (what they played) receive further polish and balancing tweaks.

I don't know what to think. I mean, i played the beta and decided then and there that it was a game i would love. I'm just not dependant on a score jn this case.
That being said, i can't really see why Bungie thinks its a good idea to sell a game and allow gamers to go at it without a review to temper, or at least manage expectations.

The moment to moment shooter parts are outstanding, in my opinion. Always felt that way, even when playing the alpha and beta builds. The game lacks mission variety, so I can see why some are down on it, but it's a fun game.

How can you know if a game is worth investing in without buying it? All you have is reviews, impressions and footage.

Seriously... It shouldn't be the only factor, but reviews act as guideposts.

Can't say I've agreed with most of the AAA title reviews in recent years so maybe it's time I adopt a different philosophy.

I thought I would enjoy the game but I don't. The mission design is terrible and repetitve. A story is almost non-existent.

Maybe it would be fun with more loot. I don't know.

I like the visuals and the sound design but that's it.

He meant get better as in much more content, mission/loot variety and story progression. The beta seems like it was already the "meat" of the game and people were obviously (and rightfully so) a lot more.

But you didn't buy it... So how can you come to this conclusion?

There's that thing called twitch.
At first I thought it was only the beginning missions that had the same pattern.
After a few hours the streamer himself started to get irritated and switched it off.
He was playing with a friend too.
Keyphrases of the stream were:
"WAIT, I know what happens. Robots will spawn and I"ll have to shoot them then activate something. See, I told you !"
"God is there anything else to do in this game ?
"How many of you did I save 60 bucks today ?".

I honestly don't understand the gushing over this so called next gen shooter. What does it do that other games have not done?
What is so special about it? The clinical and bland art-style really irks me. It's like western devs are afraid of doing something wacky or weird

I swear we should take all this AAA budget and give it to the Japanese devs

Pay for dlc!

No, I'm not sure. But I have a feeling I'm right.

Yeah, my biggest concern about the game was content.
I loved the alpha and the beta, but I expected 8 planets/moons with 3-5 areas each about as big as old russia. That way I would have dozens of hours of fun just exploring the world and the grinding wouldn't feel grindy.
Then the news came out that there is only one area on each planet/moon and there is only earth, mars, venus and moon.
