Seems the story was already finished going on two years ago.

It's a fixer upper, and I have no problem with anyone giving it a 6/10, but man am I having a Fucking blast playing this 6/10 game lol. Either it's the worst best game or the best worst game, I am having too much fun to care about review scores.

play games, not scores

Can someone please tell me where people are getting the idea that Destiny was supposed some revolutionary new experience? I never felt that playing the alpha and the beta, Destiny was just an extremely solid game that is really fun with other people. Its the same shit that happenned with TLOU. People hear that others are hyped by a good game and people assume the game must be some ground breaking new experience and end up being dissapointed as they are waiting for that experience they think others got that never happens. People really need to start keeping their expectations in check, this game is really fun if you arent waiting for something special to happen.

NO! Just fucking NO! Bungie and Activision hyped THE FUCK out of this. So did the gaming media and these so-called "journalists". They deserve the backlash.

My expectations will be in check for every other game this year because none of them were hyped to hell and back. Shit, Destiny's hype makes Call of Duty's look quaint by comparison, and that takes some fucking HYPE dude.

Haha, no. They dug their own grave, now lie in it.

I'm glad destiny turned out to be the most fun game I've played in years. I've always wanted a new pso for the modern era, and here it is, and it's not even from sega. Thank you based bungie.

The thing I love most, out of all the negativity and people saying it's soulless, I feel the exact opposite. There's a huge world of loot and beautifully crafted to explore. If anything it'll be just like pso with those that's stick with it for the long haul like any other looter with decent legs on it. Now give me a sewer fight bungie!

You make it sound like they pulled a Gearbox. It isn't that bad and the style of game they made isn't the problem; the problem is that they didn't really do anything with it.

It's even hard to say the misrepresented the game with the Alpha/Beta taken into account. The PR pieces are bullshit, but 'a story up there with LOTR and Star Wars' is hardly the damning thing about a still decent game.

I never said it was a bad game. What it is is a profoundly disappointing game. It is objectively a good PvP multiplayer shooter and an ok co-op loot game. It is not a vast deep universe nor is it an epic story by any measure. Far from growing the audience beyond traditional MP FPS bros this game will be appeal to precisely that demographic only. Its not Gearbox level shyte in as much as it doesn't seem deliberate. What it does show is that Bungie have been working away so long and hard at this that they ended up drinking their own kool aid on how "epic" and "deep" their game was. They misrepresented it because they kept insisting it was something it wasn't even to the point of calling the Beta a "tiny slice" of the game when its actually a material amount of the game.

How disappointing, those slides suggest something really huge in scope, and I remember thinking that when it was first shown and thinking it was the first real 'next gen' game.

Does this suggest that the game changed approach through dev or they just didn't finish it in time? there are zero 'colourful characters' in the game which is filled with un-explorable cities and sparsely populated, sterile areas. None of that stuff is in the game! It's not ground-breaking either.

If there's one word I could use to describe Destiny, it would be "soulless."

Gameplay is just okay and decent fun with friends but feels like a watered-down version of Halo. I will say though I very much like the speeder bike thing called the Pike aka "Ghost 2.0." It's fun as hell to just drive around.

NZ Gamer - 7/10:

"Destiny isn’t a bad game, by any means. If you like sci-fi shooters, you’ll get a good 20 hours of enjoyment out of this. But that’s really all it is; a fun, forgettable shooter that plays it safe and sticks to what’s been proven, with nothing to really set it apart from it’s peers. But maybe that’s for the best, because Destiny’s one area of attempted innovation - it’s hyped up social elements, persistent world, and multiplayer gameplay, are it’s biggest failing."

This is pretty much how I feel about the game as well.

So how's the DLC supposed to be? I mean, is it more of the same, or are they adding the things that people are asking for? (NPCs, more weapon designs, gameplay design changes, etc).

Also, if the bigger sites give it scores that range from 7-8, is there going to be a backlash for sending out copies so late? I mean, I imagine a lot of people are going to call shenanigans on that.

I think Bungie needs to fail to be great once again. There's so much potential in this game, but they need to stop talking about how amazing they are, and actually start to be amazing.

Reading those slides is almost tragic.

Man, the game they are describing/ they wanted to make sounds so much better than what we ended up with.

But I want THIS IP to be great. It has so much potential and I love the concept.

Can someone please post one of these interviews where Bungie said this will be some revolutionary new experience? I obviously didnt read them

Still don't see why people care about the story. Do you buy cod for the magnificent story, or battlefield etc. Nobody cares about story in multiplayer online shooters.

People don't even follow the story in MMOs.

I follow stories in MMOs that deserve it. However, mostly all MMOs are cluttered with nonsense that didn't take an ounce of effort to do. Square-Enix is probably the only developer that has attempted to even make it worth our time, but even they have fallen victim lately. Lack of cutscenes, and mindless drone type quests don't make for a fun story.

That may be your opinion, many people that I know do follow MMOs story. I know I did.

The people who keep saying "who cares about the story" don't get it. The quality of it itself isn't what most people are complaining about. It's the fact the the story telling is non-existant and provides zero context to what you're actually doing in the campaign. It just feels completely devoid of anything to give it character.

From articles it seems to at least be a bit of more of the same. It will likely unlock some of the areas that are blocked off since we know that it will be reusing some areas.

It does have its own narrative, but as to if it will be tied more with what you're doing and allow the player the choice to give a damn or is just like what we got in the main game is up in the air.

They haven't said anything about any of the other stuff, but I'm leaning towards no. That will likely either be in a major expansion or some huge update if they bother. That or tie it into the 2nd 'expansion'.

Bingo. The gameplay loop is decent, but it would be a huge plus to be given a reason to give a damn and actually know what I'm doing and why. It just comes off as extremely shallow, and even more so when judging by what there is Bungie expects you to be giving a damn.

The Destiny commercial I just saw quoted the Escapist right at the beginning. Something like "Stunning..." or something like that.

They gave it a 3 / 5?

This is amazing. I'm almost done with the game and I haven't met a single named NPC. Like an actual name. How is this possible?

I guess they didn't want to go through the trouble of having to name them. Hence the Wizard, the Moon, the Fallen, the Wall etc.

Typically, games receive their report cards before they become available to the public. We don’t believe Destiny is a typical shooter. You could experience the storyline, jump into a few rounds of competitive multiplayer, and form a Fireteam of friends and take on all the Strikes and you would just be getting started.

No Luke, that's almost the entire game. For someone who used to be one of my favorite podcasters, always calling out the bullshit, this is really disappointing.

"In the straight-up campaign part of the game you’ll absolutely be experiencing stories that have a strong narrative spine, that have a beginning middle and an end.

There’ll be a cast of core characters that, like you, evolve over time.

We absolutely are going to tell good narrative stories and linear stories, but those are just part of what you can engage in with Destiny’s world."

Bungie failed so badly by their own yardstick.

"I could tell you my name, or why you're doing the things you're called upon to do, or how exactly we got to this point - I could tell you of the prophecies and legends that foretell the dangers you face, and I could even try to explain why you need to use an external app or website rather than experiencing this world's lore and backstory in-game, but I don't even have the time to tell you why I don't have the time to tell you those things. So go forth, Guardian of Light and fight the darkness, because darkness is bad, and legends shoot things in the face for loot. Oh and collect 60 Spinmetal while you're at it, we're running a little low. K thanks."

Strangely I forgot my preorder, but I might just not pick it up if the content amount is as low as some say and levels seem repetitive. I have no time for grinding or playing the same shit again and again.

This is good.

Not that it could be better, but after seeing what Destiny is I wish Blizzard got their chance with Project Titan instead. I know that the only things that we know are rumors, but Titan was scrapped a couple of months after the Bungie deal with Activision IIRC, so people started thinking that Titan was going to be a MMOFPS, but got sidelined since Bungie was going to do Destiny and already had more experience in the FPS genre. All rumors, so take with a whole truck of salt.

Man. Yeah, it's really sad seeing the potential the game had.

You forgot to mention the hype from Sony. Remember Sony hyping this at every bloody game show and basically every opportunity the could. Sony.

While I like some things from the game, there is a lot they did either very safe/tiresome

The game plays great, the weapons actually feel good, although really there is no penalty for not buying the ammo packs, if you are ever out of ammo just wait and the game will give you some, talk about hand holding.

The skyboxes are gorgeous and the environments and level designs are cool. The music and sounds are also great. The bad stuff, the AI is just atrocious and the story is so throwaway it seems it was written over a weekend at best. The missions are so repetitive, its 90% deploy the ghost and wait for 3 waves of mobs then boom, its done. Strikes are fun, but shit bosses are just bullet sponges no an annoying degree. Theres no tactics, just spam and hold down the fire button and watch out for adds.

Now back to the AI, everything is fodder with the exception of bosses and anything with a shield. The shielded mobs though, they are more annoying than actually threatening. Breaking their shields down is a pain (even with the appropriate damage type) and then they run away so often and regen so fast (specially since they don't have to reload) that they end up regening the shield. And it's so easy to bug it out where it won't react to you shooting it or the imaginary lines the AI can't cross (so next gen).

More loot should probably fall, specially off mini bosses and bosses, to give you an incentive, right now doing level 20+ strikes, wasting 20 minutes on a boss and getting nothing is just so bad (could have learned from Blizzard and what they did with Diablo).

The UI is great, but lacks things like map in free mode, having to go to orbit to get to the tower after a mission or go to orbit from the tower to get to a mission (I mean come on, someone had to bring that up in a meeting).

I still would give the game a 7.5/10, but definitely not a new leap in gaming goodness. What it does well it does very well (music, atmosphere, skyboxes, weapon handling, the basic aspect of a shooter) but it kinda falters on some key things.

I'm surpised people who find that the game a rip off other sci if haven't mentioned the cabel... thought it was a nice idea at first but seems lazy to me. Just shove space Marines Into the game and even give a trophy for it. They even use space marine guns and flags.

I Mentioned it in the other thread.
