I already got to do the freshers/going to uni shit once, but due to my mum getting cancer i had to drop out to pick up the slack around the house when she became housebound. I'm back finishing off what i started. I have only one class for the entirety of semester one because it's a 2 semester class and because i didn't finish it all i have to do it again from the start. This means i'm pretty fucked in regards to making any friends on the course since i'll only be in 2 hours a week initially. Also I can guarantee that i'm older than almost everyone on the course, even though i look like i'm 12.

I'm simultaneously looking forward to it again but not. Also freshers week happens from the 1st of September but i don't get my loan until the 8th so no cash to do shit :/

Yes, postgrad! I am super excited, Durham is one of the top universities in the UK in archaeology and Museum Studies :)
Awesome ^_^ Do you plan to stay here or are you going back over the pond once you've finished?

I'm 30 :( Finish when I'm 33.

I just reread the OP, pretty hilarious, nice job.

My other regret based advice, which may be too late at this stage, is go into halls if you can. It might seem better to get a house with people from High school etc,and you may be worried about not liking the idea of living with strangers but you can become too insular and miss out.

Then again you could get a bunch of assholes, who steal your milk and unscrew your door during the night and drag you out of bed...

Unscrewing the door takes real dedication when they could have just kicked it down. They really must not have liked you.

Living in halls also means that you might end up with racist wankers from Laandaan or pricks who think it's a good idea to blast music out at 5am on the same day everyone has an exam.

I have never come across this... what?

Living in halls is great with the communal feeling, but I do agree, the blasting of the music/partying can get tiring when you want to get to sleep or work. Lived in halls in Central London.

Happened to a friend of mine, I didn't go to Halls, hence my regret.

They dragged him out of bed because he wouldn't participate in playing Smash Bros at 4am with lots of alcohol involved, which actually sounds pretty great.

Taking the piss out of the Indian/Pakistani guys from Bolton for no other reason than the colour of their skin and their accent, pretty much excluding them from anything that the rest of the white guys did.

I didn't care enough to intervene though, cause they were the pricks playing music at 5am.

I apologise - I wish the guys in my halls played Smash Bros, that sounds great. I was stuck with the typical COD and FIFA lot.

OK, I think I've recovered enough from the victory hangover.

Where do you live: From September, Birmingham! In halls! Woo!
Where are you from: Coventry
What are you studying: BA English and History
University: University of Birmingham
Sport of choice: Um, I'm more of a walking/dancing type to get my exercise. I like watching athletics tho
Console/Weapon of choice: Wii U has Bayonetta, I'll go with that
Favourite UK TV show: Probs Sherlock tbh, that or Silk
CBBC or CITV: CBBC although lord knows the last time I watched either was years agoooo (god, I fucking loved Jungle Run tho, makes me want to watch it again)

My main fear is money shit, I'm scared of how I'm going to make ends meet and manage everything. It's bizarre that we never really did money management in school. The plan is basically to shop at Aldi and Poundland and to get ten weeks' worth of toiletries together before I go so that's one less thing to worry about. My maintenance loan doesn't even cover the accommodation which really doesn't help. Guess it's time to stack shelves.

I don't want to be Mr. No Fun but at the same time I don't want to get myself into any difficulties by pissing all my money down the sink. Main problem is Freshers' Week, really. Vodka red bulls add up.

how much have you past students lived on? If calculations are correct I should have around £75 a week after rent, gym and phone bill...

Definitely in the same boat here, I've got work if I need it but I just don't get how students manage to go out so damn much

Posted in my Uni's fresher's facebook group. Trying to found out who my flatmates are. Already found one girl who's amazing and lives in the same flat, and another who's doing the same course as me.

And holy shit there's fucktons to do in Fresher's week. Winchester's got haunted walks, comedy central, pub quizzes, movies and of course huge parties.

I'm shit scared but excited at the same time.

For Gaf-fers who are doing their postgrad, how do you fund your studies? There is no student loan given by the government for postgrad is there?

You're right, most people get partial funding through studentships (research affiliates), NHS (for medical programmes), company sponsorships (implications obvious) and other disability related stuff.

Here's a good summary.

.

Here's a tip. Don't look like a fool taking a picture in front of the Bull in the Bullring. But honestly , you'll love it (although I don't like Brum too much having lived there my entire life).

Maybe it's just the impression the media gives us. I'm not really the type for nights out over and over anyway, so maybe that'll save me. Or maybe I'll try prinking with cheap vodka.

Posted in my Uni's fresher's facebook group. Trying to found out who my flatmates are. Already found one girl who's amazing and lives in the same flat, and another who's doing the same course as me.

Oh wow, I just did that too, using my barely-loved Facebook profile. There was an app, I entered my details and it came back with some names. Unsurprisingly, currently there are no other guys living near me doing courses in the School of English. And I have three flatmates already! I'm not going to look at their profiles too closely because I know I'll get fixated on some small detail. I think I'll just ignore it unless one of them messages me tbh, otherwise we'll have no small talk to go through on the first day lol.

I've browsed through the boys that live near me, couldn't tell from a cursory glance whether any of them were gay lol siiiiiiigh

Mm, Birmingham is offering a lot for Fresher's too. And by a lot, I mean, an armband for free entry into a shitton of nightclubs, plus some sort of Ball and body painting sesh. Nightclub thing costs £45, the Ball and body paint add an extra £15: I'm already spending a fuckload of cash on this place, I can't believe they're trying to wheedle more out of me. I'll probably grab the nightclub one tho, I won't mind that.

Fuck, they're all going to be the landed gentry here, aren't they? That's the reason why everything costs so much, because they're all going to have titles and lands.

Everything's getting so real, I feel like it's rushing up on me.

Here's a tip. Don't look like a fool taking a picture in front of the Bull in the Bullring. But honestly , you'll love it (although I don't like Brum too much having lived there my entire life).

Haha, half my family live in Brum so I'm pretty used to it and I know the centre pretty well. I don't even notice the Brummie accent because to me it's normal. Do people really take selfies in front of the Bull? Christ.

Hey Freshers, I'm doing some mentoring for new students (specifically people living at home), so what kind of questions would you like to have at a first meeting or expectations?

Jeezzus I move into halls on saturday, how's everyones packing going?

I have barely started :|

I don't really understand, do you mean what would I ask a mentor or what I would like to be asked by a mentor...?

Sunday for me! Packed most of my stuff weeks ago, wanted to go for ages. Mum keeps buying me stuff and doesn't think I'll survive unless she buys me every, single, thing.

Still only know one of my flat mates, out of a possible 7. Luckily there's a huge freshers party on Sunday so hopefully I'll get to know them pretty quickly. I'm a lightweight though so I'll have to keep my drink down.

I recommend getting a NUS card to all Freshers.

Annoyed that I don't know my timetable yet, got important video game meetings to sort but I don't know when I'm free D:

Yeah, don't be the guy that needs to be dragged around because he's too drunk to walk, that's my thing

I wish my mum was like that but I guess now I'm 20 and have lived independently for a year she knows I can survive without her
What I would like to be asked by a mentor
I guess some helpful encouragement to socialise, questions to make sure I've got everything I need, I think if I had a mentor I'd want someone that suggested events to go to and was enthusiastic like when Peter gets that black guy to help him when he's diagnosed as "retarded" someone to push me out of my comfort zone and make me try new things I wouldn't necessarily steer myself towards on my own.. Don't know if that helps lol

Hey Freshers, I'm doing some mentoring for new students (specifically people living at home), so what kind of questions would you like to have at a first meeting or expectations?

Not a fresher, just going into second year but I live at home and I would have appreciated hearing about how to travel around the area in the evening to get home and still have a sociable enough nightlife. I wasn't one for it in College but at uni I had no idea at first and I was the only person with that problem which was annoying. Hopefully that helps.

Where do you live:Near Brighton!
Where are you from:Near Brighton! Home is just north of the city.
What are you studying:Mathematics and Computer Science, second year.
University:University of Sussex
Sport of choice:NFL (watching, at least. Not a sporty chap myself)
Console/Weapon of choice:WiiU at the moment, but for the period between October 3rd and the 24th, it'll be 3DS for Smash before Bayo is out.
Favourite UK TV show:Blackadder for life son.
CBBC or CITV(brit kids tv channels):CBBC, but they both suck now.

Living in the South is so expensive as a student, I'm glad I live at home so I can actually afford to retain my hobbies. I know the area really well having lived here all my life, so any Sussex or Brighton freshers if anyone wants to hit me up I'll happily show you round or grab a few drinks sometime!

Mmm, soon the streets of Nottingham will be awash with fresh meat. Soon.

Soon.

One of my buddies is doing his PHD. I.e I can get into freshers events. :) They are unfortunately starting to look really young to me. Starting to, not quite there but starting to.

Hey Freshers, I'm doing some mentoring for new students (specifically people living at home), so what kind of questions would you like to have at a first meeting or expectations?

I don't know if I've any questions in particular I'd be able to suggest or whether the mentoring is strictly for academic criteria, but something that you may be able to do if you're in second, third, or fourth year is arrange a group night out with your group so that everybody can socialise (which is what the peer mentor did in my group to a terrible crazy-golf place where you "Bring Your Own Beer") and get to know each other so that, at the very least, the new students have a 'group' of people they know, something that's particularly helpful for anybody living at home in the area (particularly if they don't know many others attending the university) who may miss out on some of the 'student accomodation buzz'.

From my personal experience I wouldn't consciously think to try and hold back on the drink, neither think to try and drink as much as possible. Just drink with what you're comfortable with, stay in a happy state and have a damn good time. The first few nights are absolutely essential in meeting your potential life-long friends IMO - most of my flatmates from first year ended up missing the first few nights out for various reasons, and in that time I just bonded so well with people from other flats that I became best friends with them and rarely became proper friends with my actual flatmates over the course of the year (I was always spending time in these other people's flats).

Oh and also when playing drinking games follow the rules and actually drink! People get fed up with the `boring` people who always try and avoid it. Though saying that if you get made an incredibly dirty pint - avoid it. It will just screw up your entire night. And also if you ever feel you are too drunk just go to the toilet and down a few pints of water, helps tremendously.

Wow, I guess it's easy to see that I drink a lot at uni.

Just finished packing and fresh have done a fresh install on my PC... feelsgdmann.jpg

Starting to set in how halls is just around the corner!

So excited! Managed to get in touch with a few of my flat mates, aww hell I hope they aren't on here in my sanctuary..

Hahaha.
I've never really been much of a drinker, so it scares me a little bit. I literally have no idea what my limit is, or lack of. Can't really stand anything outside of cider, so I think cocktails are on the horizon for me.

Starting uni next monday and it's depressing the hell out of me.

Why?

Is it because you don't know anybody? Because nobody knows anybody. That is the great thing. Everyone is scared and alone. There are so many different societies and groups of people that, if you put in the effort will be good for you. There will always be somebody or many people you can be friends with if you look in the right place.

^My advice to freshers would continue this - attend as many taster session for societies as possible. Particularly for your specific course, but also for interests you have, be it gaming, dodgeball or Harry Potter. Even if you are really anti-social there are people less sociable and weirder than you! You just have to put in a little effort.

Also, in halls keep your door open as long as possible. Maybe have cards/games available. Also, if you have a games console, play local multiplayer...

next saturday aaaaaahhhh

idk how to feel, my flatmates are mad in the best way and really it's a match made in heaven, but I'm still utterly terrified. i think when i get my feet on solid ground and i start getting a sense of what my life will be like it'll be fine, it's just weird seeing all these nebulous dates for inductions and fairs and not really being able to envision the locations at all

in terms of drinking, lmao, i'm more than fine. i know myself pretty well so there should be no major upsets on that front.

Can't wait to go to Freshers week in Newcastle. Going to get my wristband. I am doing a Masters so not technically a Fresher but I'm still going. Going to be getting absolutely Paul Gascoigne'd. I see there's another Museum Studies bro on here *fistbump*.

OK, I have a little story. Not about fresher's week specifically, but about living in halls in the first year.

So my next door neighbour and I were friends (we did the same course) and we lived in a shared space with seventeen people sharing a kitchen (and three toilets, two showers). Needless to say, it was a bit wild-west'ish. The odd little bit of food or drink used to go missing but in the grand scheme of things, considering the number of people, it wasn't a big deal. This kitchen and subsequent rooms were in a building with 3 floors, each floor having 3 of these kitchens, so a total of 9 kitchens and approximately 150 people.

Anyway, my chum here had a car, which was fairly exciting. This meant we used to go to Asda at 3am and get all the reduced food and whatnot (including one January when we went in there and was staring at all the half-price Christmas food inc these microwavable burgers and hotdogs. We were musing about whether they were any good and the guy working there, on his knees next to us, just said "don't bother, they're fuckin' shit" without even looking at us) but that's for another time. What we DID used to do, though, was drive all the way to Ikea to buy Kopparberg. This was back in 2006 when the only place you could get it was in Spoons and Ikea. So we went there, probably a 2 hour round trip or so, and bought 16 cans or so.

One night, we came home and our last 2 cans were missing from the fridge. We were outraged! We were hurt! We were spurned. Dejected, we started organising our next trip to Ikea for new ones whilst sleuthing our way around the kitchen, trying to work out who might have taken them. The problem was, whilst the kitchen doors were locked, most of the time they were left on the latch because the heavy door would slam locked and taking the keys with you every time with a pain. Between that and the extremely heavy footfall, they were typically rarely locked; This meant our suspects could be any of the 150 people in the building.

So we were back to Ikea, another 2 hour round trip and this time we hid it all (24 cans this time) in our cupboards, behind all the tesco carrier bags and 5kg sacks of pasta, and we thought we were safe. We came back the next day and they were gone. They were all gone.

Something changed in us that day.

It was a pretty significant financial outlay for us students, but more than that, it was disrespectful to our time. From that day on we went full-on shock and awe. The only way we could be sure of getting revenge on our persecutors was to target everyone; The hunted were to become the hunters. From then on, we basically executed a tri-weekly blitz of various kitchens in the building, stealing anything from booze to bags of ice cubes, petit pois, bernard matthews turkey dinosaurs and vienetta. Anything was fair game. We recruited petty gang members to assist us, and we'd scope out the joint before attacking, and we had contingency after contingency based on what we found and how our possible interactions with kitchen inhabitants.

A typical scenario would be thus. We - a group of maybe four of us - would walk quietly around the halls until we found a kitchen with the door on the latch. We'd hang around for a second to see if we could hear anything inside, and then I - alone - would walk in. All the kitchens had corner areas so I'd check the corners and if we were alone, I'd signal on the door and we'd move onto stage 2 (leaving one person outside). If there was someone in, I'd pretend to be drunk (which was easier to do when I was drunk) and ask if they knew where "Jonathan Edmunds" was - a guy we knew for a fact was in the next set of halls along. They'd inevitably say they didn't know what I was talking about and I'd leave. If it was empty though, stage 2 would begin: This is when the 3 of us in there would each go to a different fridge-freezer and raid. We had about ten seconds to do it. After that ten seconds, we'd just take what we had and GO, turning off the light and closing the latch making sure the door closed properly (requiring a key to get back in). This bought us some extra time to escape because when the person that had put the latch on went to come back to the kitchen, they'd find it locked and need to go back to their room again to get their key. Meanwhile, we could have been two floors away!

The guy outside would stay there as a watchman. If at any time this person walked in, it meant someone was coming. At that point, we had to stuff everything into a hiding place - a bin, back in the fridge, under a table. We'd all run to the windows and just start screaming out of them. When the "target" walked in, we'd all laugh and pretend to be having a shouting conversation with someone out the window. This was such a frequent occurence in the halls that people rarely batted an eyelid, even when the people doing it didn't "belong" to that kitchen.

Our reign of terror only ended when we left university. In 2nd and 3rd years we'd still occasionally do it by befriending a fresher in that hall and sneaking in with them, or otherwise just following someone in. There was a door where the lock just flat out didn't work for some time, too. We never got caught, we never got found. We were darker than shadows.

Looking back, what we did was wrong. But I regret nothing. We needed people to suffer the same pain we suffered, to feel the same emotion we felt. And I sleep fine at night.

I graduated (from Warwick Uni, anyone else?) this summer, this thread is making me sad. Freshers was the best part of Uni for me.

Make the most of living in halls with loads of people freshers. Especially if you're doing a 4 year course and all your friends leave after 3, because that last year will be hellish.

Also, annoying as it is depending on where you are you might need to have somewhere to live next year sorted as early as Christmas. This means you need to find people to live with pretty soon. Be aware that once someone gets the idea that they'll be living with you and your friends it's hard to shake them of that idea without being very ruthless.

Be careful with the student overdraft. They are interest free, until you graduate. Some get slowly ratcheted down over a year (I know NatWest does), others you need to be even when you graduate. If NatWest still do a free railcard get that student account but I think they stopped doing that.

At the very least learn to cook some basic pasta meals. You'll save so much money.

Don't be fooled into thinking doing all nighers for assignments is a laugh, or an experience all students should go through. It'll make you want to die.

It's so easy to go from 'it's ok, I just missed one lecture, I'll just check the notes and it'll be fine' to sitting exams where you literally haven't been to a single lecture for that course. You can make up for that in revision but it's a lot easier to just go to the lectures. Don't miss any; once you start skipping it'll end badly. I had one week in Freshers where me and a friend just didn't go to any lectures. Actually I had a couple of terms where I barely went to any. It makes revision so much harder, it's not worth the lie in.

And yeah have fun too I guess.

Great story CyclopsRock.

As a professor too, first weeks are the best times at the university. Seeing all the insecure kids stepping out of the comfort zone of their parent's nest, blinking in the light, hesitantly edging unto this rollercoaster of experiences. Little kids with hopes and big dreams, that I'm going to squash with glee. New meat for the grinder.

Basically I'm jelly as fuck.

As a final year student (second time at Uni as well), I can safely say I'm over that shit, as fun as it was at the time.

In my day, unions got actual bands in, instead of hiring plastic people from Made in the Only Way is Geordie. No idea why the majority of people are interested in that shit.

hahaha cyclops that's awesome

however after meeting you many moons ago I can't say I picture you as such a vigilante

Where do you teach?

*_* praying not where I am

Just because it's not a popular sport doesn't mean that it's not viable for my list!

Basically, Hardcore Bowls is Bowls with football fans and ice hockey players. Tackling other players is permitted.

I think my problem is the fact that I am that person who is less sociable and weirder than others. I'm absolutely terrible at going up to someone and saying hi and even more terrible when it comes to maintaining a conversation because I never know what to say.
