Why not go a step further and say they shouldn't have reviewed the game before all the season pass content was out

The game they put out on the market is shallow. Reviews are supposed to be based on facts, not on future promises.

Yep. I'm still waiting for a game to really show off the PS4 and XB1 in a overall package. Underwhelming first year imo.

Whilst true, Halo's campaign is also no where near as fleshed out as what Destiny offers with it's PvE. One offers a traditional single player campaign experience with co-op, one is more RPG esque with shared world traits, a pretty hefty progression system, masses of equipment and gear and all the rest. So it's not really a straight comparison.

I do think Destiny 2 will be more content heavy and better fleshed out. Destiny feels like Mas Effect 1 in many ways (with the degree of repetition, cloned weapon designs etc). I think part of that maybe because of the number of platforms it launched on, it being the first game in the franchise (developing engines, assets etc takes time), and it being cross gen. Here's hoping the next game is next gen only.

COD4 also released 7 years ago….To me it's also still the best Call of Duty game.
 
Laying off Marty ... Now this game. Man I am sad about what happened to Bungie. I will reach the max level and then sell it.

It looks great and the gunplay feels good. But Characters, story and missiondesign is just bad.

TitanFall was docked by many for its lack of content.

It would have been even more disappointing coming from Infinity Ward though, since it would have been far less justifiable.

I think you may be mixing up the causations here. Activision and Bungie aren't going to be surprised by these reviews. They do mock reviews and internal playtesting. I think it's likely that the actual reason for the embargo as well as no early release copies for reviewers was to simply try to stave off the impact of the inevitable bad reviews.

I guess if you play multiplayer for THEATRE MODES (you can capture video from the UI now), ranking systems, and dozens of playlists.

I'm just talking about the core mechanics and gameplay, which are just as good. I love that I can carry over my custom guardian's mechanics into MP world and gain loot/XP regardless of what I do in the game.

This would be a good point, if TitanFall didn't review almost 10 points worse than CoD4.

I explained my "bare bones" comment earlier in the thread if you care to search. It's lacking a lot of stuff that they'd already offered in Halo 3/ODST and Reach. They're simply not comparable, with my biggest gripe being that Reach offered matchmaking across all modes.

OP, but I think it would be cool if companies would also review GoTY editions of games as a fresh review. Would be interesting to see how the game after a year of patches and additional content shapes up as a full game reviewed as if it was an initial release.

I'm right there with you. I feel the same way about movies. I mean who needs a plot, or character development. Just show me some moving pictures on a silver screen and I'm as happy as a fish on a stick. You know at one time movies didn't even have audio tracks and people enjoyed them just fine. I can't understand why people always feel the need to improve things. Just lock that sh!t down. If it was good enough for someone, somewhere, then it should be good enough for you.
 
I enjoy Destiny and it is somewhat addicting. But its not a great game. And if I had to review it, I would probably score it into the 70 at best.

All those additions that will open up, they won't change the fact this game doesn't entirely deliver. Iron Banner is just Crucible with stat differences. The Raid, well, if the Strikes are anything to go by I'm not sure if the Raid is going to be a thing of awesomeness. Not even matchmaking for that one. Get 5 other friends with time to kill, or bust.

Weak story and narrative (god, Dinklage is awful.. I bet he got a big bag o cash though), repetitive missions, weak communication options... No custom games, no online ranking, no editor, terrible bosses, not many planets, exploration mode is laughable, Events that aren't as cool as presented at E3 (i'm always fucking alone). And co-op is useless in story missions imo, why would I waste time with that? Strikes are the most fun to me, but they don't feel all that well designed. Enemies spawn everywhere for the sake of it (I had a Knight next to my face during the Moon boss). And its again place ghost here, eliminate horde.

That would likely require significant delays, but it will be interesting to see if/how Bungie responds to the criticisms.

Forza Horizon 2 will be the first to do so for X1, I'm certain. Hopefully SO as well. PS4 I dont follow as much.

Even this is arguable. The Halo campaign's might not have RPG elements or looting, but it does have much better mission variety and vehicles to change up the pace.

So when are they supposed to review the game? After every little piece of DLC has come out in a couple of years? The reviews are already very late in comparison with other games, in this case you can't really fault the outlets for releasing their reviews too early.

I play multiplayer for fun. Having all that stuff makes it more fun. Not having that stuff makes it less fun. Yes, Destiny has great shooting mechanics, but at the end of the day, that's not enough to carry the entire game.
 
I may still pick this up especially if anyone was able to acquire it this week with some Target $20 off with preorder stacking.


I can live with an 80 type game that will receive more stuff along the way. But only if the new stuff is more varied and different
 
From literally a string of masterpieces , 2 Edge 10s to this. Not dissapointed, not surprised but really saddened. As an xbot from 2001 these guys were the dream team when it came to FPS. Hope they recover, but I don't know, a lot of the old Bungie moved on, Marty being treated the way he was never sat right, he was one of their ambassadors. Shame.
 
I think 7-7.5 is about right.

I agree with the points in polygons article but 6 is a little low for me

anyway, what happened to Bungie. Halo 3 was a master piece. If they could've channeled half of that into destiny, it would be a great game

It sounds like some of the complaints could be fixed with a couple big patches or expansions. The lack of socialization, loot, (extra missions?) etc.

Actually iirc the drop rates are the same across all enemies, so the best way to farm items is to just find large mobs.

Of course they are when the game tries to be more and fails spectacularly.

Plus it has to be measured against it's peers, simply saying don't play it's competition is not a conducive argument.

That comes down to personal taste, then.

Having all those extra bells and whistles doesn't make it more fun to me, because I never used theatre mode or forge, nor did I stray much from standard objective or slayer game types.

For me, having the ability to customize your class and play him in MP is much more fun to me.

I'm not being dishonest. I can't count the amount of times I've read or heard "all you do is shoot things", "it's just a shooter", "it's not groundbreaking and revolutionary, it's still just a shooter" etc etc. It's cool to bring up fair complaints about how you feel there isn't enough content, or this or that, but don't have this pseudo intellectual pretentious stance of "all I did was shoot things, I just wish there was something more." It's as if people have become embarrassed about having fun shooting things.

I know people who denounce Stephen King's work because it's "childish and simple." It's not unheard of that people do the same things when they look at a shooter, and feel video games should be above this sort of thing. I can enjoy Stephen Kings work because he's an incredible writer, and a story being about a killer clown killing children doesn't change that. Likewise, I can enjoy a shooter being a shooter, because I think shooting and good combat make for really fun gameplay, and don't expect it to be this totally new thing that no one has done before.

that's what bungie is going for here. it wasn't supposed to be a "launch it and start working on the expansion" type game. they've stated time and time again that the game was going to be kept alive from day to day with events, playlists and additional content.

I had to read this, as it seems damningly low. I hoped it would mostly be derived from the games stumbling and lack of good communication options. Instead it seems like a sloppily done, misinformed review.

Neither reviewer seems to understand that bosses have weak points. That if proper communication and coordination are used by fireteam members the bosses can be eradicated much more quickly than if you simply fire willy-nilly upon them. Arthur professes that the game doesn't communicate the "trick to beating them more expediently," despite the ever present damage numbers flying off as you fire and the armor pieces flying off the legs of a devil walker as it stumbles into it's dizzy mode while exposing bright orange cores, for instance.

I've already posted about the AI complaints. Which I'll state again. This is a new property that is pitched as part MMO launching in the hopes of growing a large player base. They have catered the default difficulty as such. Which is why people that have been playing games for multiple decades should set the difficulty higher. It's absurd to review a game this way. It's like Usain Bolt doing a shoe review for Nike but only running a single 55 meter dash.

The score is fine if they back it up properly. They have not.
 
I don't envy the reviewers, as my experience has fluctuated quite drastically with Destiny so far. I've enjoyed the gameplay, have

yet to do. The story is too nebulous though and I find it disappointing that the race you choose seems to have no bearing on the story Dragon Age Origins-style.

The biggest low so far was pvp last night. Now, I'm not the best at shooters, but not that bad, got a few perfections in Halo 4, so seemed to be improving. But in the Crucible I spent half a game getting zero kills and headshoting people with a shotgun only for them to have a little bit of life left and finish me off, and they were all above level 20, I'm still sub 20. Suffice it to say I left the game, pissing off my fireteam in the process - I thought you could quit on your own, oops.

If the pvp continues like that, I'll get my shooter fix in Titanfall and Halo MCC.

Literally every review posted, even the positive ones, have more substantial criticisms of the game than what you're talking about.

That works great if the game has a ton of content already in it, like most MMO's. For a game with this amount of content, holding any of it back to trickle it out is a mistake.

Yeah thats what I was thinking. The game has some dissapointing things to it and they outline that well but the core gameplay and co-op is fun enough that 6 is on the low side. 7-7.5 seems about right and that could go up if the raid ends up being something special other than shoot the terminator boss with glowy eyes and hide behind cover.

I had waaaaaay more fun with the combat in Borderlands from the very first second I could shoot things, that I've had with the 8 hours I spent in the Destiny Beta and 4 hours I spent in the full game last night. I dunno if it'd going to get much better the more I play, either, whereas in Borderlands every new upgrade actually added more fun to the combat.
 
I totally expected it to score 75% reviews/ratings.

It's living up (or down) to my expectations.




AS for people saying it was reviewed too early - NONSENSE.

If you have to wait until you hit the maximum level before you start enjoying the game, than it's not a good game.

You know if a game is good or bad in the first couple hours of gameplay.

Item drop rates are about the same, but all elites (yellow health bar guys) drop glimmer and they're fairly likely to drop stuff like Ether Seeds and House Banners as well.
