Destiny - Review Thread

I think one thing that needs to happen is Bungie/Acti announcing that some new free DLC areas will come and to lay out what they will be and when they will come. It's very unlikely, I know, but I think it would bring some goodwill back in peoples' minds. There's just not enough content, and I can't help but think that realistically the only CHANCES of new areas will be in the expansion packs (if, even then. The first one is supposed to take place on the moon, and that's not exactly the most environmentally diverse place).

the first two DLC packs were part of the limited edition version so they're not going to give those away.

I don't think people will stick around long enough to see a third.

Well, it's kinda tricky, because games that require a lot of time to delve into make it kinda hard to review it in such a short amount of time – which is why I think it was the right decision to have people not review the game before it came out, because they want to have their reviews out by release day.

I do agree that reviewers should review what's there and they can update their reviews, but the problem with the latter is that we're in an environment where it's the day-one reviews that matter so much.

I think Day One reviews are so important because day one sales matter so much for publishers/developers.

I dislike the whole pre=order culture that has developed and agree we'd be better of if the industry allowed 2-3 weeks for reviews to come out. Unfortunately sales are so front loaded people want to buy games as soon as possible which means reviews needs to get out asap too.

I don't know how we could solve that problem other than people becoming more patient and I don't think that will happen any time soon.

those are not criticisms of a game.
No, but I consider whats happening here to include a natural cleansing of hype toxins.

People will let it out, the fog of crazed expectations and billowing clouds of marketing pixie dust will disperse and people will take in the game for what it is, not for what it claimed to be, or what people hoped or expected it to be.

But the cleansing has to happen first.

Carrot on a stick gaming. You basically unlock everything the game has to offer as you go, down to the multiplayer modes, and basic character movement. They had this thing figured out. Its like a psychology experiment

Kind of agree. I was playing last night and at one point felt like I was being played and almost went back to the Last of Us

The giant gulf of opinion must ultimately come down to expectations. It seems that some people expected Destiny to be a game with a deep, intriguing plot and an entire solar system to explore. Those people are let-down and angry about the final game.

I just expected a game that acted more like a social hub, allowing me to talk with a few buddies while shooting random enemies. I am pleased so far.

Prime's scanning mechanic would fix 90% of what's wrong with how Destiny presents its world and how disjointed its story is.

I guess it sucks that a lot of those Prime guys work at 343 instead of Bungie

After everything I've seen and heard so far, I'm glad I didn't get swept up in the hype. It does look fun though. I'll probably pick it up when there's a full edition or it's cheaper.

This is the attitude to have. Money for games is relatively a non-issue for me, so that doesn't really concern me, but if this game had just come out from some random developer, I have to think it would have been better received. The expectations set by bungie / activision / reputation were simply not met.

That is a good idea. Would be a way to get the info from Grimoire cards into the game instead of the website/app.

You know? This is not such a crazy idea.

The current way it's handled via the grimoir cards leaves the story very disconnected from the actual game.

Having completed the story and currently doing my second playthrough in co-op I still don't know what the different species or the darkness are, I've got some vague ideas but that's it.

The weird thing is, I went in expecting the game to be lackluster.

But so far, it's my favorite game this year - by a mile.

We should all just assume games are going to be shit. That way, we're never disappointed. Or in some cases - pleasantly surprised.

So, did Bungie "earn the right" to make a sequel?

they can do whatever they want, but speaking for myself I regret buying the game and would be very, very weary of buying another bungie game after how much they misrepresented this game in their choreographed stage demos and various other statements.

on its merits, it's a well resourced, pretty, but badly executed game, underbaked or miscalculated in nearly every possible regard. that alone doesn't make me angry, but when they pretty much lied about what the game is leading up to this, it kinda does. at least to the extent that a game can make me angry.

Shadow Fall is quite honestly one of the worst first person shooters I've ever played in my life. Destiny stands up pretty well compared to that, lol

Yea but Bungie is both held to a higher standard because of their pedigree and the victims of their own PR. This game was played up to be something far more grand than what was actually offered. Going into Shadowfall, all we really heard was the game looks great, and it did, but it wasn't fun.

If you're not able to have fun in Destiny - hooboy I just don't know.

Thank god the rest of the gaming community isn't NEOGAF. I have no problems finding people to pair up with on strikes and free roaming. The general consensus while we're getting our asses handed to us is "This shit is too fucking fun."

Different strokes I guess.

what did they "promise"

By promise they mean "What did I imagine the game would be like based on what I saw and others got hyped that they might be able to do. . ."

Not trying to defend the game, but this concern trolling is ridiculous. I never thought I'd see the day where a 7.4/10 is a bad score.

Your not looking at it from an industry perspective. The one where people use Metacritic as an actual guideline. Not to mention the inflation of review scores is still in effect. Some people start going nuts if something is below an 8.

I was expecting Halo with some light PSO-style MMO elements. That's what I got. I wasn't expecting The Next Big Thing, though Bungie really tried to tell me it was. I'm not an adolescent anymore so I stayed off the hype train.

Yeah, same here. I'll be very cautious with their future output from now on.

In all honesty I don't think there is a situation where the scan visor wouldn't fix poor world building. Halo 4 could have really benefited from that addition too.

More or less insane than your assertion that people who dislike the game are "concern trolling"?

It's crazy how people are cherry picking the shit posts, but then turn around and do their own shit posting. Boggles the mind I tell ya.
So, did Bungie "earn the right" to make a sequel?

I think the potential alone is enough to warrant a sequel. The mechanics are pretty good/great for the most part. They just need to spruce up everything around it.

I wrote up how Bungie should play all three Metroid Prime games but I got ignored :(.

Despite the MP games having lock-on and not considered to be traditional shooters, I think they do a great job at some things Bungie tried to pull off. Namely boss fights in the first person using a gun (in Samus' case, an arm cannon).

Bungie is doing what Borderlands does. It wasn't a good idea in Borderlands and it isn't good in Destiny either. Even the boss fights in Halo 2 and 3 weren't good.

In all of the Prime games, there hasn't been a bullet sponge at all. Some of those bosses from Prime 2 and 3 are actually challenging for the uninitiated.

I know. I'm saying they should make additional areas that will be free for everyone OUTSIDE of those expansion packs (which contain multiple things, like new missions and MP maps). But, like I said, Activision is very unlikely to release free areas to everyone, so I'm not actually counting on it.

So, did Bungie "earn the right" to make a sequel?

In reality, sales are all that matters to the future of a commercial product. Doesn't change things starting off so poorly for a ten-year journey.

I really dislike the announcement of planned trilogies and franchises because they presume success in a way that seems rather insulting...as if the sheer force of marketing dollars can be enough to get one off of the ground no matter how lacking that first game can be. And then I think of Assassin's Creed 1. *sigh*

Is the IP good, is there good story telling, characters ,etc?

It's a mixed bag. If you're expecting something more cohesive like Halo, you'll probably be disappointed. The ideas and lore of Destiny are solid but it doesn't fit together as easily.

Stuff like "Darkness", "Light", "Save the world" etc. and all that generic shit doesn't really do it any favors either. This ain't Kingdom Hearts, Bungie.

74 after 17 reviews

obviously with so many reviewers left the score could still change drastically but i think it's pretty close to where it's going to end up

Maybe you should wait and see the sales figures first.
I know this game will sell like mad, but I can't imagine Destiny 2 being as successful, especially when there will be actual competition later in this gen. Bungie has virtually no competition right now and this game is fueled by Bungie's past success with Halo.

We've all seen the massive sales figures, but how do you guys think Destiny's popularity is going to change in the future? Is the average player adoring it and excited to dish out some money for expansions, or is this series going to have a cloud over it?

I'm not sure the average person who picked this up was expecting the bulk of the focus to be group-based high-end PvE that requires collection or marks and rep grinds. I have a few friends who bought this because it was Bungie, a few are in love with it, a few are slowly becoming confused at the lack of variety, and a few aren't such big fans. I wonder what the general trend will be.

Me personally, I'm willing to drop money on the expansion content IF this first raid has interesting bosses. Not "We took a regular enemy, gave him a few unique moves, and pumped his health up a ton" bosses. Bosses that require actual teamwork and cooperation, bosses with interesting mechanics that differentiate themselves significantly from dealing with regular enemies, and bosses that have unique models and a real feel of 'epicness' to their design is what I'm looking for. The same goes for the raid environment itself.

I want this series to be successful and keep improving, and I'm hoping Bungie is taking a lot of these review criticisms into consideration: a lot of them are very valid.

Yep. If someone is dumb enough to buy into the hype train and dreams of chocolate waterfalls, it's at least partially their fault.

In fairness, I doubt the game would have sold nearly as much without the advertising. There's a reason they spend so much on it.

By rest I mean people actually playing the game, not moaning about how they were "lied" to. You know, gaming the verb not the adjective.

The train hasn't even left the station on that Metascore, yet. There are still plenty of reviews to come.

I've been looking at game releases for a long time and I can't remember once when the score of a game went up as more reviews came in.
