So what happened to rap?

OP, just listen to Big KRIT and Kendrick and call it a day until you want some dope trap then listen to Days Before Rodeo be La Flame is killin' it.

yeah its a cacophony alright

OP needs some MF Doom in his life.

Doom will open doors to amazing hip hop like he did for me. If it wasn't for the album Operation Doomsday...I would have just settled with listening to roc a fella and nas albums.

the idiocy of the original topic's already been discussed but I didn't see if this had been:

this assertion that popular rap is only about one thing is loaded because popular music is only about one thing. every mainstream pop or alt song is about fucking and partying. fucking lumineers and of monsters and men songs are thinly veiled chamber folk ballads about wanting to get in each others pants and being twee in gentrified neighborhoods. the black keys and the arctic monkeys are singing to you about being shitty to girls. Taylor swift and fucking Magic! want to bed chicks or be bedded after getting wasted.

Not only is the very premise of the argument based on ignorance of the genre of rap music, it's based on ignorance of music as a whole. learn up.

Sometimes modern rap makes me feel like I'm about to have a hangover. I know there's people out there who get all worked when they listen to it. I like it on occasion, but I'm not big into music. I think I was in like early 2000s, but music just isn't something I find that enjoyable.

I'm gonna make a thread bashing Rock music because not everything sounds like Nirvana.

Please do....I get tired of the constant "rap is crap" argument while Rock can't get the same shit.

It's not fair...hell I feel some type of way that nothing out nowadays in rock sounds like The Mars Volta, Soundgarden, Faith No More, and or King Crimson. Instead of tearing the genre up for it....i embrace other artists or go by word of mouth. Better than discrediting an entire genre because it doesn't sound like shit from the Native Tongue era.

The only thing new I've noticed with new rap is that they're always shouting out to their haters.

I don't have any haters. I'm generally well-liked. :(

Also they always name drop Instagram.

Yeah, chart rap is all pretty shit. Look elsewhere.

That said, can't blame someone whose only music experience is popular radio stations thinking that narrow slice of a genre is the majority of said genre.

if they can find GAF, they can find more information on music genres

Haha yeah, I've noticed that as well. Kids wearing "haters love me" or some variation. Makes me think they make up these haters in their heads.

This whole thread reminds me of a DJ in Philly that used to play underground hip hop after 12am on Friday. It was always because he would play artists like Ras Kass, Canibus, Slum VIllage and etc. Unfortunately, they kicked him off the station for bullshit reasons and the fans petitioned for him to come back. He came back but it was for a short period.

It a shame how there's not enough DJs like that guy who can expose listeners to different artists beyond the ones they are constantly spoon fed.

Sometimes you gotta take of the Nostalgia goggles

Drug use is nothing new for Hip Hop music

the notion that these subject matters are new is ridiculous

Not a connoisseur of rap, but Kendrick Lamar and Childish Gambino are amazing.

Also, who cares if pop-rap is all about that stuff? I loved, and still love, Ludacris' "What's Your Fantasy" (and the remix), Candy Shop, 50 cent's 2000 stuff "In the Club," whatever. It's mindless, sexually explicit, catchy, high-energy fun stuff. I'm always down for that.
3005 has been in my head for awhile.

Ultimately, in this current atmosphere, sex and sensationalism sells more than politics or philosophy. Some of these artists have a message but they have to eat too. Case in point is J Cole. He basically opened up his concert with a protest against the violence against blacks in America. But that's not what gets radio play. It's uncomfortable subject matter.

well, rappers don't tend to do well in battle rap in general, and he probably didn't took it seriously enough, underestimated Dizaster and didn't do any research on him and wrote some corny, general lines about him

If that was the 97 Canibus battling Dizaster then Canibus would have brought it.

But the 2013 washed-up Canibus....nobody gives a shit.

I think the OP just wanted to make a "suggest good rap music" thread but wanted to be edgey about it. His original post was terrible and his follow-up made no sense.

Well it worked.

Because the Internet was an amazing album. Dope concept album with that screenplay. He killed it. Big improvement from Camp, tbh.

wish we could go back to the '90s when no one was rapping about violence, misogyny, titties, drugs etc

also sittin sideways is easily pitbull's best track

All sarcasm aside...I was bumping some early De La Soul, Rakim and EPMD the other day....gotta say it was fresh as hell listening to that stuff every once in a while.
