Destiny Lore & Spoilers: Shakespeare it ain't

Also is my ghost special? He must've have said "this encryption is impossible to break" like seventeen times right before breaking encryption. Is that the Traveler's magic, he knows the decryptarum bonum spell?.

Maybe the Traveller is a computer? And the Ghost is acting on his behalf

I finished the story arc today and it's really really poor. I mean all you get are tidbits of stuff and never really get any answers for anything. I was hoping you'd learn more about the traveller or something cool would happen with it but.... nothing.

Maybe they're keeping all that shit as DLC because of their "10 year plan" for the game which would suck

What? Then what the hell is that Heart of Darkness thing at the end? The Vex are literally prostrating themselves before it in the middle of a temple, how is that not worship?

UNLESS THE VEX ARE THE FUTURE-HIVE BECAUSE... TIME???

If the Heart of Darkness was the Darkness and we basically killed there is no reason for Destiny 2 or 3. Pack it up guys time to go home. :p

Nah, I'm kidding. I have no idea what that thing was at the end. I'm guessing a Vex machine god? Sort of like how The Fallen worship the Servitors. Who knows.

And everyone knows Vex = Future Guardians from the Past! /s

How can you guys debate the story without acknowledging one of the most important aspects?

In DESTINY, you play a Guardian, one of many who serve as Earth's final chance for protecting the Last Matte Painting at all costs.

If the Vex can teleport anywhere why don't they just like turn one of their numbers into a bomb and teleport into the city? Or why doesn't the Fallen drop an asteroid onto it? Or, at one point you're said that the Cabal blow up planets in their way, why don't they do that to the Earth? How is the dormant Traveler stopping that? We're told it can only protect a single city.

Because space magic.....apparently

No doubt about it, the story and pacing is atrocious. Explanations behind each and every mission are either thread-bare or just completely confusing:

Shrine of Oryx (Moon Mission) introduction: "Every end crawls from the same pit. Rising from the schism to swallow matter, light, and life. It will not be stopped, but here it can be slowed. The shrines of Oryx must be destroyed."

Um... what? That's what you're giving me going into this? I have literally never heard of these shrines before, have no idea what they do (if anything) but that's how you introduce me to them and motivate me to destroy them?

That said, there are interesting ways to read into some of the events. Take the Fallen on Earth - battling hard with the Hive. The first time you meet the Hive is after Dinklage hacks his way through a door saying "The Fallen really didn't want us getting in here." There's a good chance the Fallen end up being "good guys", and in that mission we were screwing up their attempts to keep the Hive locked down.

Also, what are the odds for the Traveller being the big bad in Destiny 3? I'll also put money on The Speaker being the big bad of Destiny 2. Dude looks shifty as ****. Bonus bet: The Speaker knows the Traveller is controlling the Darkness, deliberately keeps the Traveller locked down to save humanity, but can't tell anyone else for fear of humans not believing him (since the Traveller is practically our god). We learn the Traveller is unable to awaken because of the Speaker in Destiny 2, so we take out the Speaker. In Destiny 3, we learn he was being a bro all along.

Am I the only one who thinks that they made the story as vague and obscure as possible for marketing reasons, i.e. in order to get people to discuss the game and their theories about it online, thus generating tons of free marketing and keeping the buzz going?

The fact that you died in a traffic jam is the best thing about the story.

Do we know what Joseph Staten's involvement extent was in the story writing before he departed? Did he write the lore/grimoires but left the in-game stuff to others after he left? Would explain a lot.
lol was thinking that today. brilliant.

I'd give this potential if TLOU didn't exist. But, as it does, and the vast majority around this is negative, I'd say no.

th

This guy does a voice in Destiny. Having beaten the game, I have not even one single clue what his character's role/position are within the city, nor why I should be obeying his orders, nor why is he giving me orders, nor even what does his character look like. Is he a robo? Is he a human? Is he a not-quite-human Awoken like me? Is he a Guardian? Not a single goddamn clue.

I don't even know what is a Guardian. Do the Guardians have a command hierarchy or are we all independent agents? Do humans of the city who aren't Guardians ever fight? Is the entire military of The Last City comprised of Guardians? Is the Speaker a Guardian? Are Guardians at all concerned with civilians? Why would we be if we're immortal(?).

Can the bad guys kill Ghosts? How would they do that if Ghosts can turn invisible and also have access to some pocket dimension that's at least big enough to hold the head of that Gatekeeper thing.

The biggest question of all: why can't I match-make a party for Heroic Strikes?

Dont ask why you are following that guy's orders, ask why you are following ANYONE'S orders. Who revives you? Who controls the Ghosts? Is the Ghost controlling you? Why are you following the orders of disembodied voices? Maybe you are being manipulated, maybe all the reanimated corpses that fight the Darkness arent doing so by choice, at least consciously.

Except Dark Souls is completely different. The mysery aspect of Dark Souls is front and center, the story is not told in any traditional sort of way. There are very few cutscenes and few characters to interact and speak with.

There's more NPC dialogue in Dark Souls than in Destiny, Dinklage bot notwithstanding.

I keep feeling like the game, is a game within a game.

I wouldn't be surprised if my Guardian turns out to be an Avatar of some sort, of a player within the Traveler.

It would explain why i am fighting wizards and goblins and can PVP without penalties.

The dead guardian you find on the moon is just another player that got IRL killed within the traveler.

It would also explain why you can't read Grimoires within the game, because that information is for the gamer (you or the one within the traveler) and not the guardian.

I only have access to the Earth and moon so far, but once I realized that there were no story related trophies to earn, it wasn't going to get any better. I still don't know why I'm doing anything except just following checkpoints.

Shooting stuff is still fun though.

I like how we go from not knowing anything about the Vex in one mission-- literally "what are those things?"-- to a mission later having your ghost saying "Well, if we're going to take down a Gatelord, this is what we gotta do..." How the fuck do you know what a Gatelord is? When the Reef Twins said "bring us the head of a Vex Gatelord" the response ought to have been "A what?". Not "yeah cool story awoken bro. We on that shit." smh

Irritating because I'm really enjoying my time with Destiny, and the lore they've created is really fascinating to me, but dammit if they don't treat it so carelessly and half-heartedly.

My favourite part of the story was the part where I was an awoken and the awoken don't acknowledge this at all in the reef

That was crazy irritating. With all the money poured into development of the game they ought to have at least recorded a few seconds of different dialogue tailored to your race for key sequences like that one-- especially that one. Without any thought to things like that it makes the choice of races even more of an afterthought as there are no bonus, etc.. attached to any, just key figures attached to each race to show "representation" I guess; Speaker for the Humans (maybe?), Exo Stranger for the Exos, and the Reef Wondertwins for the Awoken. Same with factions.

This is not right, in the sense you have to use your phone to read Grimoire cards.

This is also crazy. If they wanted to dump all their lore into the cards they should at least give you a way to view them from within the game. Pulling you out of the experience just to drive traffic to BNet or increase adoption of the app seems cynical.

Currently the most interesting thing going is people finding ways to glitch into areas not yet unlocked and waiting for some timed event. I just want to do that in order to take some pretty pictures with my Hunter.

Come to think about it, does being an Awoken revived outside of the Cosmodrome even make sense, given the Lore? Weren't they humans who fled to space and there took on the new characteristics?

Didn't think I'd say this but Destiny massively failed to beat Mass Effect 3 at something.

The story is so bad that when I reached Mars there was a small part of me still thinking "why is this so bad? Wait.. wait.. Bungie are you doing this on purpose? Are you gonna pull an Assassins Creed/Deep Down and reveal another layer on top of this story? Damn Bungie you got me good, I'll just keep doing these missions and wait for this awesome reveal."

I want some lore expansion on that asshole Awoken dude's belt buckle. The part where he leans on his knee and grabs his belt buckle is the highlight of the whole awful story. It seems so out of character and the animation is hilarious. He looks like Ian Curtis but as a sherrif.

All I came away with was: The something something caused by The something something so you need to shoot The something something and now you've shot The something something you're done good job don't forget the first Raid is coming soon.

Enjoyed the gameplay but the game is a lot more MMO than Bungie would seem to care to admit - right down to vague plot with archetype styling and limited resolution because, you know, there's plenty still to do.

Mind you I bought the game figuring the core design was pure MMO so I'm not exactly disappointed just waiting for more content.

Hah I wasn't even going to touch that but yeah, that's weird also. Either the whole character birth sequence in the beginning was another afterthought or there is a reason ghosts can revive people from Purgatory (i.e. the Traffic Jam) that died in the collapse... as a people group that evolved into what they now are, after the collapse.

And how'd the ghost revive an Exo-- a machine-- from that mess? Did it just reconfigure a carburetor or something?

We, the Players, are inside the Traveler. We all died during the Collapse and the Traveler collected our souls and Matrix-ed us so that we'd pilot the Traveler's corpse soldiers.

wow huh damn that's deep really makes u think

Should change his name to "exposition bot"

Except he doesn't even expose anything.

Yeah I finished the game but I don't understand the story at all... The traveller saved humanity... the Guardians need to save the traveler from "the darkness"... blah blah blah shoot aliens!!!

I really can't wait for some Polygon or other site's expose on Destiny and its development process. I'm mostly interested in how their ambitions got left by the wayside and whether that was the result of top-level management or just poor design/planning. Particularly in regards to the story. It felt like, from Day One, they had such a concrete idea of what they'd be presenting to us, but wow, something got lost.

On a semi-serious/interesting note, I thought this theory about "The Darkness" was actually somewhat interesting:

http://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/2gd9lr/i_overheard_a_fallen_dreg_say_something_and_now_i/

Thats interesting. I'll have to try and stalk some Dregg myself and listen in.

I've been suspecting/hoping that this plot offers a twist, and the Traveller and seeming cult of Guardians is really a sham and we're the evil doers. There is a line on one of the end game helmet descriptions, the helm that is cracked with light emitting from it that says "The light consumes all that it touches" or some ominous dialogue to that degree.

Possibly relevant:

Part-time lurker, second-time poster here. If you're disappointed in Destiny's story, you should give this DBO thread a read. Especially note this post by Bungie writer General Battuta:
I don't know anything about the technical or design reasons, but I do know that if we'd had to have the Grimoire written to go on the disc with the game proper, it likely would've been cut. The Grimoire as it stands was mostly written and edited in one crazy sprint very close to launch.

So Destiny's backstory lore was not only an afterthought from a functional POV -- the Grimoire interface is both entirely outside the game and highly confusing to navigate -- but it had to be, just to avoid being cut entirely. No wonder what we see in the game is so bland and devoid of context.

I wrote this... It's a FanFic rewrite of the first mission thus far... Not sure if allowed or not.

I think I added more story.

I may write more of it if anyone likes it:

Guardian - Human - Female - Titan

Ghost moved over the landscape of Old Russia, a shadow of its former self. Though the machinery of the old times
still littered the landscape, alongside the enemies whom brought its ruin. Here it was where Humanity took to the stars,
and ultimately now is nothing more than a graveyard. Snow trickles down from the sky, lying on the
ground. It would soon be night as the sun continued to set.

The Ghost reached a group of eroded cars, all bunched together on a ruined road. Unbeknownst to the Ghost, it
was being watched. Armed Fallen looking through its scope at the little Ghost, but the Fallen didn’t fire, but just
watched. However once it was satisfied, the Fallen stood up and gestured to its comrades who then ran past him
towards the Ghost.

Near a car, the Ghost began to scan with its blue light. “Is it possible?” the Ghost murmured to itself. It broke apart
as to process the data, to double- no- triple check to make sure that it’s correct. “There you are.”

Forming together, the Ghost suddenly let out a burst of light. A being, a Human Female, to be exact, suddenly formed in
front of the Ghost after being given life once more. Everything was dark, however a soft light began to awaken the
Human. “Guardian… Guardian? Eyes up Guardian!” the Ghost called out.

The Human slowly got up from the ground, hardly able to stand and grabbed onto the rusted car nearby. “It worked… You’re alive!”

She looked towards the small floating machine. “I’m… I don’t u-understand. How am I alive?”

It ignored her question. “You don’t know how long I’ve been looking for you.”

“Aren’t you..?”

“I’m a Ghost. Actually, now I’m your Ghost. And you… Well, you’ve been dead a long time. So you’re going
to see a lot of things you won’t understand,” he told her. She looked at her hands, her armor was still on and
looked as though new. As if she hadn’t died.

Her eyes were drawn to the landscape and towards the large wall nearby. Then she turned her focus back
towards the Ghost. “I think you could explain some things on the way.”

“I will do my best,” he said but then was cut off by the sound of a deep growl. “This is Fallen territory. We aren’t safe here- I have to get you to the City.”

Ghost flew away and then turned back towards her. “Hold still.” The machine suddenly vanished into blue particles and
into the Human, she shuddered. Then the being talked again, but this time it was coming through her helmet. “Don’t worry,
I’m still with you. We need to move, fast.”

“The name’s Maria, thanks for asking,” she replied as she began to move as fast a person who had just been revived could.

Maria moved past the field of rusted cars and towards the wall. “What are the Fallen?”

“Ruthless scavengers, they arrived in the wake of the Collapse, they pillaged our worlds,” the Ghost explained to her
as they got close to the entrance of the wall. “Now inside, if we stay in the open like this, we won’t survive long.”

They entered the wall and there was little light. Everything was falling apart, the walls looking as though they
could come down at any minute, this made the Guardian uneasy but still pushed on. Another growl from the fallen could be heard.

“I need a weapon,” Maria informed the Ghost.

“You shall have one, Guardian, remember there’s two in here now,” he said.

Maria stepped onto a cat walk, each step shaking the barely stable platform.

I know, I know, yet another Destiny thread.

This thread is to discuss the lore / spoilers. I know, I know, "Biz, you think there's a storyline? Hahahahaha…!”. Well, no, I don’t, and that’s a problem admittedly. That being said, I do think there are nuggets of great stuff and the environment does tell at least a slight story. Or hint at things. Or are maybe just the odd choices of level designers that can be interpreted incorrectly. Quick example are the level 18 Celebrants of Oryx Hive at the bottom of the ship where the second beacon is. One is examining some electronic device that doesn’t look Hive made. Quite frankly, they’re very out of place as there is no Hive infection to speak of and Fallen are on the ship above them.

Either way, it’s at least fun to BS about.

So those of us who’ve played, we know that the story starts with you being dead in a rusted out hulk of a car in the Russian Cosmodrome. Or maybe next to it. Hard to say. Ghost brings us back and is all “Hey, welcome back, but I just rez’d you in an area where we’re in deep shit. Let’s move so you don’t die again.”

If the Traveler / Ghosts have an army of almost impossible to keep dead soldiers, they should probably travel around in groups (of more than 3…at least 4, amirite? :) ) more often since the only way for an enemy to keep them dead would be to get the body and destroy it seemingly.

We also don’t know why some humans have light and others don’t. How does Ghost know I was qualified to be a Titan? Maybe I was a pacifist toll booth attendant for all he knows? He could have found that old assault weapon and I could not have known how to use it? Yeah, the whole set-up has a lot of issues.

We successfully make it to The City, which apparently took a long time to build under the damaged / dead God that could fall out of the sky at any moment. As it is dead / dying. Or maybe not. Notice the Tower is nowhere near directly under the damn thing. I’m sure it would be caught in the shockwave, anyways, but it’s fun to think about. Either way, the fact that it’s dead/dying and may not stay up forever hasn’t really been considered. The indefatigable human spirit I guess. Additionally, exactly how it protects the City or protected it long enough for the remaining humans to return to power is also unexplained. The Speaker talks to us, says we have many questions, but answers none. At least he gives a kickass speech about how “Now…the children are frightened anyways”. I love that line.

He tells us to go out to Earth and beyond where Guardians are already fighting and join them. Huh. So Guardians are already out there kicking ass? And random banter from NPC’s seems to indicate that? That’s odd, considering the end of the Earth based missions where we find an Array and places in the solar system that we thought were lost. I'd imagine a quick sensor sweep could clear that up?

At best, this is confusing, as the very first mission is to find a Guardian who captured a spot on the Moon and then went missing. The player is obviously not the tip of the spear here. Later on, we have to go find the Awoken. Ghost knows where these people are and, hell, there are Awoken in the Tower. If they’re from the edge of the ‘Verse, as it were, what the hell is going on with the storytelling? It’s like it doesn’t recognize its own timeline.

Speaking of, the Time Traveler (imo), the Exo Stranger, cues us in on the Vex. We go fight them because the stranger said to and, more importantly, the assholes tried to kill us. Ghost translates part of their communications where it mentions space and time and considers it ludicrous that the Vex can time travel. He later seems to halfway come around to it once we find the Black Garden and kill…something….so that the Traveler can heal? I guess? Through no proof besides the Exo Stranger, but the Speaker holds a party regardless.

I dunno. I’m at a loss at this point. The only thing I do know is I like fighting the Cabal best and I actually only feel for the Fallen. They seem shit out of luck and are only trying to survive. Every single other faction beats up on them. Poor guys.

I just re-read the post....yep, that's the story.

This is gold! lol

Thanks OP

So... what the hell is an Awoken anyway? I have not even a single clue who that edge-of-the-Light lady was. Do the Awoken lead the Fallen? Are the Fallen Awoken under their masks? Why is my create-a-character Awoken but that queen lady didn't recognize any kinship? Are there three factions of Awoken: the bad Fallen, this queen lady's Fallen, and some Guardians?

More importantly: who cares?

Destiny doesn't even answer the most basic questions. What the hell even is The Darkness? Are all the enemy factions "members" of the Darkness? No, they all fight each other... Do they all worship that heart thing? Does Darkness just mean "things that aren't from Earth?".

Awoken were originally humans, but after the big bad darkness they fled to the outer regions of the solar systems where "something" happened to them...

On a semi-serious/interesting note, I thought this theory about "The Darkness" was actually somewhat interesting:

http://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/2gd9lr/i_overheard_a_fallen_dreg_say_something_and_now_i/

Yeah, no shit we're the Darkness and the Traveller isn't a benevolent god. We called that like months before release. Just weird that it's kept to lore cards in a phone app/website and not expanded on in game. I guess maybe that'll come up in upcoming (paid) DLC and the stuff with the queen?

Possibly relevant:

That's what it feels like.

I wonder what went on during the development of this game. I like it well enough, it doesn't seem like something that's been worked on for four years. Whoever was in charge of the core mechanics needs a raise and a promotion, because that's the saving grace of the game.

Might as well use this to list my problems with the "story"

1. Who are we? We are woken in Old Russia by Dinklebot. Were we a guardian? A normal person "chosen" to be brought back? We must be a guardian to start in armour right? So if we are a guardian then where was our ghost? Why didn't he bring us back? Was Dinklebot our ghost and spent all this time looking for us? Is Dinklebot a new ghost? Did Dinklebot have a guardian who fell and he decided not to revive him/her? How long were we dead?

2. Darkness this, Light that. If we are to assume that in this case, Light and Dark aren't forces of good or evil but of matter of some kind (Ghosts are born of the light, guardians gain power from the light of the Traveller etc) then what exactly is The Darkness? Are all the enemy races the Darkness? Is it just the Vex? The Hive? The Fallen and Cabal seem like they'd be alright without us killing them. Like, the Fallen (due to their name) seem to have once been a great race now reduced to a shadow of their former selves, was this due to The Darkness? Was it because of us?

3. What exactly did we kill(?) at the end of the story? They say it was a thing draining the Travellers energy and now it'll be able to slowly heal or something. Why was it left there so long? Why did no one try and stop it if everyone knew where the Black Garden was? Why are we so special to be able to take it out single handedly?

4. Why is the Stranger from the future? The gun heavily implies this by saying something like it contains materials not made or discovered yet or something. If there is time travel and she is a time traveller (along with her radio buddy) why did they come back to help us? She says she isn't a guardian. Is she from a future where the Traveller dies and so she came back to save it by pointing us in the right direction to kill the black heart thing? Is that the thing she doesn't have time to explain? If so does that mean the Traveller isn't evil and is in fact the light and the shit is really as simple as kill the ugly aliens and ugly robots because they are bad because they just are shutup?

5. What are the exo? It's probably in a lore card but they had the potential of being cut apparently so why isn't there an explanation in game. Why am I an Exo long dead in Russia? Why do Exo come in male and female? If you're an awoken why were you in Russia? Were there Awoken back then?

6. Why is everything "centuries" old? Nothing is newer than that.

7. Why no more missions like that one sword one?

8. What's up with Rasputin? What is he planning?

9. Why was the Hive on Earth such a big deal when they are around on the surface in a bunch of place? How did one shutter keep back an army?

10. Why can no one else do the jobs you've been doing? They don't seem that impressive and haven't been attempted in "centuries" for some reason. Are the other Guardians lazy?

11. Why do none of the other "characters" seem to care when you do something impressive?

Is this really supposed to be a story driven game? IDotA2 also has a terrible story, but that's mostly because they don't want it to have a good story. The lion's share of the most popular games these days don't have stories or only pay passing lip service to a narrative.

They were comparing 10 years of Destiny to Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Game of Thrones etc.

So people were expecting something more then a 13 year olds idea of sci fi Fanfiction

I wrote this... It's a FanFic rewrite of the first mission thus far... Not sure if allowed or not.

I think I added more story.

I may write more of it if anyone likes it:

Guardian - Human - Female - Titan

Pretty good, though I think it'd be better if it wasn't a play on the opening scene of the game. Flesh it out a bit more with a different opening, and then maybe lead into this scene. Otherwise, tone down the exposition a bit and you're golden.

Surely the best part of all this is how everyone was doubting Tyrion for his performance. Nope, Tyrion fucking knew it was dogshit and that's why he phoned it in. You don't go from Game of Thrones screenplays to whatever the hell this stuff is without knowing somethings up.

7. Why no more missions like that one sword one?

This is the biggest plot hole, that was super rad. Hot tips though: the Hunter's second specialization has "go into third-person and wreck shit with some swords" as the super. So if you want to dump a bunch of hours into leveling a new character to 15 and then losing all your class upgrades to bust back down to someone who can't double jump for a while in order to eventually be able to kind of do something almost as cool as that one mission you--ummm--can, I guess.

Lol, poor guy. No clue what the fuck he is saying. He's just one step away from ending every sentence of his script with a question mark.
