iOS Gaming September 2014: Brace yourselves, 4.7" and 5.5" Hi-Def gaming is coming

I was referring to iOS too for the matter, didn't know you couldn't re buy the app (which is silly because you could have asked a refund because it didn't work but then devs could have patched it later).

But still I can see this heavily abused expecially considering how cheap the iOS crowd can be.
And it would damage indies in particular (I've read even just lite versions hurt sales).

I can already see people waiting for a patched and stable version (so no needs for updates) buying a game, asking a refund, playing it till completion then deleting it.
Rinse and repeat.

Of course, for 'normal' people (meaning honest etc...like here) this could be handy but all that considered, I'm highly skeptical Apple will do this (I do not know how they handle refunds and which 'proofs' they need now tough).

EDIT: I know they could limit this to X requests and such, and it's probably meant for kids and accidental purchases more than anything else...but still I'm skeptical and have little faith in the human behavior :)

Yeah, but since Android does uninstall the app, the only real abuse would be for short games.

I think 2 hours is too long. Even the 15 minutes was nice on Android because even though a game may say it's compatible with your device, sometimes it isn't and that was a quick remedy.

I think maybe 30 min would be good for what I was saying as far as being enough time to serve as a "demo". Of course, anything can be abused. And pirates themselves are still the bulk of concern IMO. Guess I'm a glass is half full kind of guy who hopes that this allow people to check out and, hopefully, be convinced to buy a game they may not have otherwise.

Time will tell for devs on Google Play.

That no questions refund period would have been nice when I got Baldur's Gate only to find it's pretty much broken on a small screen

I'm under the impression still that Apple will refund any purchase you make no questions asked if you say the app doesn't work on your hardware... though I do expect the app to be updated eventually to work correctly, they gave the iPad a few updates, and having an unplayable product (in the sense of bugs, not screen size) is bad for your image when you plan on eventually adding more games with the same engine.

Pretty sure they will refund it if you ask.

That said, side bars apart, I'm really enjoying the game, even more than on iPad (much less blurriness).
Already on chapter two and last night I almost didn't sleep exploring the wilderness.
But hey, I love the game and I'm willing to play.

It's not ideal, nor the best way to experience it first time, impossible if you do not know the rules already (impossible to read key infos in the char screen with maxed out fonts) but I have Baldur's Gate in my pocket!!!l

I won't complete the game again for the...maybe 6 time?...but I can't wait for IWD and its perfectly crafted encounters.
I already anticipate some co op with friends around the same table.

EDIT: btw the side bars bug is hilarious, more than anything because they weren't aware of it.....I reported it this afternoon.

Looking at my Usage, my Mail app is taking up 300+ mb. How would I reduce that? Don't want to delete messages, since I have a lot of emails from devs. I read that the attachments take up a lot of space, though

Godfire is down to $.99 for the first time. Reviews are mixed, but price is low enough for me to bite anyway.
Honestly I'd wait. $6,99 to $2.99 to $0.99, and a lot of IAP packs? It's going to go free eventually, maybe even permanently.

Why on earth did I install iOS 8 Gold Master? (I have a developers account). The AppStore is broken, push notifications are far more frustrating, email notifications are non-existent. Many apps crash. At least battery life seems the same and whatsapp works perfectly...

I wonder if any ipad only games will be compatible with 6 plus in the future?

I wondered this too before the keynote, but Apple didn't provide a scaled resolution or some particular method, so I assume it's up to the devs (i.e.: more work).
I wonder if they can select now which devices you can install a game....there could be games for iPad and iPhone 6/plus only.

I kinda want to see FTL move over to it tbh

There are certain ways you can restrict down the devices a game can be installed on but only indirectly such as requiring a minimum OS. You can't explicitly restrict by model number.

It's actually quite annoying when trying to cut support for lower end devices like the iPod Touch 4th gen without cutting out higher spec devices you still want to support.

Then how does something like Monster Hunter Freedom Unite work then, where that won't install on iPad 2's due to it being incompatible (I assume, according to compatibility section on App Store)?

I think that you can still install it, but it won't boot up. I think. Don't quote me on this!

I should clarify, I was referring to how you can restrict down which devices can purchase/download an app.

You can do further stuff either intentionally or unintentionally which stops a downloaded game from running on a particular device, but that doesn't help you if you have a premium title that somebody could have paid for without it being obvious that it won't work on their device.

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite seems to deal with this by putting the below disclaimer even though you can actually purchase/download it on an iPhone 4 and iPod Touch (5th Gen 16GB)

*This title does not support the iPhone 4, iPod Touch (4th Gen), iPod Touch (5th Gen 16 GB), iPad (1st Gen), or iPad 2.
*It is possible to download this title to an iPhone 4, but performance is not guaranteed.

Thanks for the words of warning. I was thinking of jumping right on it next week when it's released to the public hoping it may fix some weird cellular data issues I have with the App Store.

But if it's that unstable, I'll wait. I should have expected there would be the usual issues with some apps not working, etc.

I imagine the App Store issues themselves are probably due to the fact that the store (as I understand it) is getting a decent overhaul with iOS 8 and may be conflicting with the way the current store operates.

so how likely are old apps to be forwards compatible?

We've been testing all of our stuff as best we can and haven't encountered problems. Though you never really know whether there will be widespread problems until they roll out the OS and you suddenly have millions more "testers".

Anyone playing Terra Battle?

Just played it for an hour...seems surprisingly good.
I'm really really digging the combat mechanics.
Took me a bit to finally defeat the real first boss...I hope the freemium mechanics doesn't ruin it too badly.

Production values are an order of magnitude above the Puzzle&Dragons myriads of clones and there seems to be even a cool story...narrated in a similar way of the Lost Odyssey poems.

Yeah its awesome, currently stuck on the final boss of CH4...he is a bit hard.

I like it more than P&D.

I had overlooked Partyrs, but the game dropped to $0.99 due to poor sales and I read good forum impressions, so I decided to check it out. Here are my impressions
Partyrs released last week, and it’s already had a price drop, in the hopes of exposure, sales, and finding an audience. It’s disappointing to see games like this struggle. Partyrs is a charming puzzle game that’s well worth your time and brain power.

partyroom-660x409.png

Partyrs presents itself as a collection of parties, each level a new gathering of eclectic characters. Across living rooms, woodlands, and even outer space, the game impresses with its cute colorful graphics and polished presentation.

But Partyrs is more than a pretty face; strip away the party theme and the varied characters, and you’d still be left with a challenging logic-based puzzle game. Each character has likes and/or dislikes. One may enjoy beer, but dislike music. Another may dislike that individual but want to be next to the robot. You must swap characters around the levels so their preferences are met. Haphazardly switching characters around is one way to succeed, but to earn three stars, you must complete levels within a specific amount of moves. Under that constraint, Partyrs reveals itself to be a methodical test of carefully planning out swaps, of thinking moves ahead to figure the correct places for each person. Levels become increasingly tricky as more characters and preferences are introduced.

Don’t be fooled by Partyrs’ charming facade. A satisfyingly tough puzzle game lies beneath.

Any Fotonica impressions?
Here are my impressions of the PC version
If there's anything you can expect from a Santa Ragione game, it's style. His games may not be the deepest or most graphically advanced, but they're the type of games that lend credence to the "games as art" debate. You play these games for the visual design and atmosphere and Fotonica does not disappoint on those fronts.

Like its more recent cousin Mirrormoon EP, Fotonica is a simple game. Actually you only need one button to play. Hold to run and build momentum, release to jump, hold again for an accelerated landing. The gameplay is as simple as that. However the immense sense of speed as you rush forward, so fast that the world itself erupts into shining light and golden hues as if you've tore through some dimensional barrier, and the sense of immersion as the screen shakes with every landing and leap, makes the game feel that much more intense and thrilling.

But the highlight is the visuals. As you tear through each of the six multi-tiered lanes (four unlocked, one secret, and endless mode), you'll encounter an abstract world of shapes and wire-frame structures, unfolding before you from the darkness. Even more than the running and jumping, it's the longing to see what you'll discover next and what each world holds that will drive the player to continue playing.

Fotonica is not a long game or even a particularly difficult game, but that doesn't really matter. It's the experience and unique art style that makes the game feel special.

Any Fotonica impressions?

Here a mine...

FOTONICA is a runner with only one lane and no obstacles (spikes, bumps, lasers,...), power-ups, coins or stuff like that. The only action you can do is jump. Hold to run, release to jump, hold again to land and you have to have some speed to jump across the gaps. Its simple... in theory, not in practice. What we have here is a skill timed first person runner and jumper game that takes you into exploring a beautiful vector universe, full of gorgeous detail. There are 6 regular levels (in am on the fourth one and is a nice challenge), a pretty and dope endless runner mode that doesn't share the multi layered levels of the regular ones but it is a skill based test on timed jumps and a versus game on a splitted screen. Its not going to change the world or set it on fire, but the control method with the timed jumps and the right difficulty with those unique graphics makes a pretty enjoyable game and makes a pretty good package that doesn't only look good, but also plays good and entertains in the long run.

Thanks for the words of warning. I was thinking of jumping right on it next week when it's released to the public hoping it may fix some weird cellular data issues I have with the App Store.

I think you are right about the store, with so many upcoming changes its probably waiting for the release to start working. Makes sense.

I am sure they will be fixed on the public release, On the other hand, iOS 8 feels like the version iOS 7 should have been. Better than ever cellullar reception, GameCenter works like a charm now, much more options like you can see how much battery usage an app takes -this is awesome- plus the blundles which are iOS 8 only, and the new trailers too. Mail app is now much much better too with the swiping. And many more... the only thing missing is..... that....I wish Apple would let me uninstall all the "Apple stock apps" I dont want. Aside from the push notifications (the apps are already all getting updates to fix incompatibility), the rest is quite nice and feel better than the last iOS, or any iOS.

howdy folks. Don't really game much on ios anymore (5 and retina mini, getting 6+), but maybe thats due to being unemployed currently :(

been mostly just playing my usual, love live during events, tiny tower vegas, occasional brave frontier.

I guess the biggest reason is iphone 5's battery isn't like it used to be, and gaming doesn't do it any favors.

Question for devs, will iphone 6+ support their own optimized games, or can they only handle upressed of 5/6?

Does that mean there will be another skew?

I guess it makes sense during the conference where they were showing off cnn having that 2 panel mode exclusive for 6+

To answer at a high level, for games to be optimized for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+ they will at a minimum have to be recompiled.

However, for the most part you should see improved performance on these devices with existing builds of games.

There isn't really another SKU as such then, in the same way you can have separate "iPhone" and "iPad" SKUs, though you could theoretically limit a game down so it is only available or runs on the iPhone 6 and 6+ if you wanted. Eventually there will be games that require these devices as a minimum, but that shouldn't be the norm for at least 2 or 3 years.

In Lith, how the hell do you exit the options menu. Nothing reacts, ending up having to force close the app to get back to level selection. WTF?

I have a 3D printer and printed out the iPhone 6 Plus and 6. The plus is gigantic. Carried it around for a few days. Sticks up out of back pocket, is comfortable in hand, but seems difficult to use one handed. Feels large in front pocket. Also, feels silly holding up to talk.

But I still pre-ordered a Plus. I can't decide if I feel stupid.

I would like to sell my iPad Mini Retina, and just have one iDevice. That's the appeal. And my phone use model has changed a lot. I just don't talk on the phone often by holding up to my ear, most calls come in the car or with a headset. I use the "phone" more often for other things. And I can design and 3D print a very slick horizontal cradle for my car.

Oh, and I hope games play great on it.

Once you receive it, you will have two weeks to decide whether you wanna keep/exchange/return it. So just try it out and see if you like it.

Oh wow that's pretty awesome! <3 3D printing

I never return anything. Maybe I should. Is this everyone's policy, or just Apple? I preordered through AT&T at 12:02am Friday morning. Not sure they have same return policy, or if anyone has exchanged a new phone through them before.

interesting enough it seems like galcon 2 will support a sorta tablet mode on iphone 6+

wonder if this means you can detect between 6 and 6+ and allow additional features to appear in settings.
