Final Fantasy XV TGS 2014 Trailer | Lord Nomura giveth us His only Son so we may live

I cannot believe how fantastic this looks. The graphics are mind-blowing for an open world RPG.

The music also sounds incredible and the battle system is a nice change of pace from the other mainline FF games.

Can't wait for the demo and potential 2015 release.

Dude... the world in XV is closer than XIII than any other game. Even the combat reeks of XIII.

Now I liked XIII don't get me wrong - but there are very similar elements.

My whole thing is - if Noctis' boy band are the only playable characters - I'm out.

What? Could you explain? Because the combat in XV is like a completely different thing from XIII.

I'm so fucking hyped for this. Even if the party looks like a boy band. If I was SE, I would already be lining up some cross promotion DLC clothes for these bros. Just imagine it now... your party fully decked out in Affliction T's. Become the ultimate bros.
$14.99, a fourth of the price of an actual Affliction shirt, for multiple shirts. ¡Que ganga!

Actually as far as we know he was the monster designer of FFV.
With the exception of a few(which Amano did, like the majority of bosses and a handful of actual enemies), the majority were pure Nomura(for FFV and FFVI).

That being said, the goblins ARE basically Yoshitaka Amano designs brought to 3D life.

Yeah, you know, like Final Fantasy games.

Seriously, these posts of people new to the series are getting ridiculous.
Seriously. Even since the first FF, you basically fought dragons, pirates, robots and dinoaurs. I'm thinking people aren't too familiar with the FF series.

Do you feel that places like the Vatican City is thematically incompatible with the rest of the world because the Swiss Guard wears differently from conventional military dress?

The assumption that FF needs to be 'medieval' just because it's fantasy is simply one perspective. I would think of XV more of a "what if the exact world we're living in is populated with magic and giant monsters?"

I don't think we'll somehow lose the cities of New York, Beijing and London and suddenly they're transformed into medieval cities with castles. Cultural development is what determines the structure and visual image of modern society. Fantasy is just one subset of a culture in that different world, and fantasy does not equate to medieval/fantasy style.
I think it's hilarious that Dr. Benton Quest notes how jarring it is to see tanks in a medieval setting:

Tanks in the FF series, going strong since 1991!

You think so? I was getting very FF8 vibes from it. Realistic trains, realistic cities, modern fashion (no Red XIIIs or VIVIs) slice-of-life, etc.

Until they got shot to the moon and everything went bizarro, at least.

Eh? The combat is completely different to XIII, it's closer to Kingdom Hearts/Type-0 if anything.

People still criticizing the car lol

It looks like a super car you'd see in a decade or so that only the richest of the rich would drive.

Also this exists on earth :

Omg lions in a wilderness vs a modern car..

Also this exists in the same world

FFXV simply exaggerates this into fantastical cities and magical beasts...not difficult to get.

Heh if we go by KH standards sure, but I don't think so outside from Cor so I'm not really expecting it. All I need is the prince but I do understand your concerns. Would be awesome but temper that expectation til further notice.

Why do people keep saying open world? It's not open world.

This game has nothing to do with XIII.

the world of XV doesnt look like XIII at all, and the combat is entirely different, how can you look at this and say that i dont even know

Open world is a fairly subjective term at this point. Some people think it means no barriers, missions dotted around a map, repetitive, disposable mission design, etc.

I believe Nomura referenced the 'open' aspect of the game being in two distinct areas, and I imagine lots of time will be in towns with their own distinct loads and maps. I imagine something more akin to Rage I guess.

Why do people keep saying open world? It's not open world.

Well Kagari, to be honest, since the insiders just love being cryptic about lots of the subjects regarding this game, the rest of us peasants just have to speculate based on what we see in the trailers. In the trailers we see huge areas with mountains far away, so we can only assume that the game is open world.

Often we get "it's not open world", but nothing more than that.

Is it like Xenoblade, then? Huge areas divided by borders and separated by caves/other areas? Some clear explanation would be nice.

EDIT: Oh, I see you have said it's more like Final Fantasy XII. Apologies.

But are the areas huge?

Kagari said it's like XII, which is good enough for me.

My point isn't that there shouldn't be motor vehicles in the game, it's how out of place they are in the environment.

Cloud drives a cyberpunk motorcycle in a cyberpunk city. The small truck is used for work in a small village.

The protagonist and his k-pop entourage drive a fucking Audi and fight giant dinosaurs. It doesn't fit thematically. Feels like a mish-mash.

"Q:The realistic graphics that remind you of a European town are also impressive.

A: Because Final Fantasy XV‘s theme is ‘fantasy based on reality,’ the concept for the art is to look like real-world spaces. That a fantasy is happening within this is a major point for Final Fantasy XV. Realizing this power of expression was difficult before PlayStation 4."

FFXII isn't open-world though.

It does have a very large consistent world that keeps offering you more freedom as you progress through.

This is hasbeen the game structure for FF games typically and it works really well for story telling.

Complete open world ala skyrim hinders story telling (although The Witcher 3 challenges this concept)

I think people mean open world in the context of a wide world map a la FF pre 10 versus stiff world progression a la FF13. It's not open world in the current use of the phrase but it's... open-er?
But we don't know if it is, do we? Unless Kagari has some secrets to share.

Think more like FF12 and FF14 style zones.
When developers talk about "open world" they mean games like GTA and Elder Scrolls.

Why do people keep saying open world? It's not open world.

i understand the world is gonna be more akin to FFXII or Xenoblade, with less loading screens between zones

but i really hope that theres an airship that we can control and that its not just a menu of where we want to go

Well, Kagari, is FFXIV open world for you?
I expect FFXV areas to be as big as FFXIV by the looks of the videos, except if they place same invisible walls or barriers (like unreachable stones and stuff).

Thanks Kagari! I think that would be good enough.

But do you know if the areas are truly big? I mean, in the trailers we see mountains in the distance, will we be able to reach those far away mountains in that particular area?

No, XIV is not open world. XIV is a large world separated by a bunch of zones.

Do you actually know this to be a fact ?

Just wondering because you keep stressing this. The game does have a world that's seamless and consistent at least right ?
Would like to know if this is a fact as well.

If it's not open world, they have done a good job at making it seem as if it is, going by the latest trailer anyways.

EDIT: Answered above I guess lol. Wonder how it is handled then, something like Xenoblade?

FF14 has a huge world and you can run around wherever you like almost from the get go.

Or when you say its not open world you mean you won't be able to do random ,pointless activities ?

I can try finding out. I've heard bits and pieces but things could have changed and probably have changed.
