Not sure if it's yet to be explained or if it was just Setrakian's old age but was there a reason he stopped/appeared to be in pain when he was about to confront the Master? Did I just forget about something? No spoilers if it going to be revealed later pls.
I could've sworn that there was some old cartoon character that looks exactly like the master but I can't think of it at the moment, anyone know what I'm talking about?

The most off-putting thing for me with the Master isn't his giant rubber mask lips, it's the eyes. I hate things with glowing eyes. If the Master is meant to be an apex predator and parasite, bioluminesence makes no sense since it won't act as a lure to his prey, it works as a warning if you see eyes shining in total darkness. Also if the implication is that he sees better in the dark because of glowing lights, I find that silly as well since the eyes act as photoreceptors, and producing their own light is going to reduce the amount they can pick up in dark situations.
Glowing eyes are the super corny stuff of a 13 year old's fan fiction story.
I believe this was my favorite episode of the season so far. I really enjoyed the whole thing except for the kid and grandma crap. The scenes with them crawling through the little tunnel to get to the master were pretty creepy. If I had got stuck in there like Fet I'm pretty sure I would have went into a full blown panic and died.
This show is a trainwreck... after a magnificent pilot and pretty good second episode it went downhill fast. I think I'll stick with the books... I just finished the first one from the trilogy and even though it wasn't without its flaws I still enjoyed it a hell of a lot more than the tv series.
The Master was scary with just the hood and how he moved. They've completely ruined it now. Should have kept it subtle. It's like those aliens in the last Picard Star Trek film.
The grandma, why is this even a thing and the doors should be locked tight from the basement not just a wander for grandma to reach the gated front door.
Having another heart problem, hope there isn't a third next time.

Agreed. I couldn't even make it through the third episode. I heard it got better, but it already showed the shortcomings I hoped it wouldn't delve into.
Quite liked it. Setrakian going crazy and wanting to kill the master was good. Nora's mom is goddamn annoying and I hope she dies horrible death. Worst character on the show. I do like Gus, hope he teams up with Fet for some vampire killin'.
I can't stress enough how much better the books are compared to this dreck :\ The books aren't ASOIAF material, either, but they're far better than their TV counterpart.

Thought the books were pretty meh, I really did not like how the first one ended and ultimately where it all went.
So far there have been ok episodes and sorta boring ones. I really like the casting for fett, the professor and gus though. Sometimes it takes awhile for a show to find its footing.
SPOILERS!!!! Do not be tempted to read ye folk who have not read the books.
Its also not too late for them to make some changes to the Master's appearance when he switches bodies
Best episode of the series yet, in my opinion. Again, no real negatives to bring up for this episode...
+ Zach's getting a bit more fleshed out, and you're starting to get a better sense of what kind of kid he is.
+ "GOD DAMMIT!"
+ Eph and Fet have a lot of antagonistic chemistry. Loved Eph's mocking of Fet's accent.
+ The tunnel scene was potently creepy, especially seeing the strigoi wriggle through like a boneless worm.
+ Gus's reaction to his mom was heartbreaking. As someone who read the books, Gus's storyline is one that I want to see unfold the most.
+ More Master, which is always good. I love his appearance personally - very GDT - but if it's any consolation to haters [imminent book spoilers]
he's going to change his appearance very soon.
Edit: Okay, I changed my mind.
- Nora's mother has got to go. What a profoundly annoying character, though I suppose that's the point.
I thought I saw that too. There was a high pitched sound that seemed to be stunning or causing Setrakian pain, along with what appeared to be some kind of blue lighting effect happening on his chest. The Master seems to be able to disable him at will. I hope that's the case, because that would mean Setrakian needs to train someone else to be the slayer of the Master.
Echoing everyone else in the thread: The Master looks bad. Really bad. He looks like a silly puppet. I have no idea how/why that design was greenlighted.
Other than that (and the dreadful misadventures of the kid and grandma) I thought it was a pretty decent episode, as far as this show goes. The tunnel scene was creepy.
One of the worst episodes of the whole season. Didn't care about Mariela & Zach (god does that boy suck at acting or what?) and Gus' storylines. The tunnel one was the best, or at least didn't suck as much.
The Strain was the top rated cable show on Sunday and ratings have gone UP as the season has continued. Good sign for the future of the show (I know season 2 is already signed on).
I can't get over the fact that there's absolutely no military presence on the streets. People are just running around looting and it's all left up to the local cops to handle. Just because Twitter and Facebook are down? Apparently the news is still being broadcast but no one seems aware there's a vampire apocalypse happening. Anyway, I keep watching for Setrakian, Fet and hoping for more Vampire Kill Squad.

Well there's 3 books so were probably guranteed for 3 seasons, but I bet they add stuff not in the books and stretch it to 4-5 seasons if the ratings continue.
Gus has gotten much better after Eichorst and the vamp invasion put him in his place and he dropped the thug shit. Wish the show was just Fet, Gus, and Setrakian instead of the Eph and Nora hour with special guest appearances by grandma and Carl Jr. Looking forward to seein more of the vamp hit squad next week
Is it me or has this show jumped the shark long ago? It's like the pacing, cinematography, and writing have been cringeworthy at best since episode 3 or 4. And I absolutely loved the first episodes.
I thought it would pick up after Blade Squad, but they never revisited that. Couldn't even sit through the latest episode.

Yep... and how about nobody leaving the city even if they can? Hey man, I will not send my kid to grandma or 3rd cousin in Iowa, I will lock him up in little shop with crazy lady.
Just dont question things, at all... thats the way to keep show enjoyable.
I think the Master is so goofy so we dont notice the wig. Set's breakdown was really my favorite part of the episode, its good showing that the guy is a human too.

AGREED! I can not STAND her. On the flipside, I'm starting to come around on Gus. I thought they did a great job showing how heart wrenched he was at finding his mother and it makes sense that he'd go on a "fuck it" hunting spree after that.
I enjoy this show despite it's obvious flaws but god damn does this Master look terrible. He looks like a fish or something. Such an awful design. Looking forward to the last couple of episodes though and hopefully the return of the vampire hit squad.
They don't even show the show where I live but I enjoy reading this hilarious thread. Wasn't a huge fan of the books even though I read all of them, so can't feel any offense at this 'sacrilege'. Book 3 vague theme spoiler:
