Urghhh...Eph, Nora and their families really brought down the show for me. It's like they're there just to shove all these melodrama trope to us, yet still being such unlikeable bunch.

Really hope this season finishes strong, otherwise I'm dropping this.

Ratsky's top 10 shows to watch in 2014 has a new episode today:
Season 1: episode 12 "Last Rites"

Dutch returns with a plan to broadcast Eph's warning about the vampiric plague. However, they face a new threat when Eichhorst launches his own attack against the pawn shop. Palmer receives a special visitor, and Gus gears up for the on-coming fight but discovers there's another mysterious factor involved.

boy has this show dropped off. for the first few episodes it showed promise, but Setrakian meeting up with Eph and Nora—which should have turned the show great—has only come alongside what seems to be a huge drop in production quality, atrocious side plots, more bad acting, worsening dialogue. it's been particularly bad the past 4 or 5 episodes. There are still good effects mostly (I even don't hate the Master, it's those stupid lips that make it so bad but the hands and eyes and head shape are campy fun), and it's colorful and loud stylistically. everything else has collapsed. As someone who normally has a higher tolerance for bad kid actors than most, Zach is terrible. he has one expression like he's reading example problems over his math tutor's shoulder and trying to follow them. his delivery of every line is godawful (his dialogue being so bad doesn't help [did this show fucking make an "epic fail" joke in the year of our lord 2014? for shame]).

I think with this week the show graduated to "watch at 1.5x speed just to finish the season" status

Something I meant to mention earlier when I saw the master in the show, I wanted to discuss with other people who have read the books. This is a pretty big spoiler, so I highly recommend not reading / exposing this. If people want me to remove this to get rid of the temptation, I will.

I'm serious about this.
This is your final warning.
Anyway, since this is a 'new take' on vampires, I had this idea. Right now, the master looks kind of Nosferatu, the old classic vampire. If you have read the first book, AND I HOPE YOU HAVE WHILE READING THIS, you know the Master will switch bodies with Bolivar. What if there is this idea that transformation is moving from old classic vampires to newer ones. Maybe when the Master Switches, he'll look more modern.

I've been enjoying The Strain all this week, thanks to XFinity's Free Channel Week, but having just seen tonight's quality episode, I'm gutted I'll miss the season finale :(.

Also watched the documentary on Concorde on Discovery - a real shame we lost such a technical marvel (perhaps mentioning Europe's mach 2.0 supersonic passenger jet on the day America lost the Ryder Cup is just rubbing salt into the wound ;) ).

Interesting turn of events

For my book readers

How do you feel about Nora's mom dying already, I think it's a plus... Don't remember the master helping Palmer at all, he kept being like "tough shit"

Considering Nora's mom being alive is a gigantic, huge fuckin' plot point in book two's finale, I am very interested in where they are going.

I made a request last week, the show followed through on it this week. Goodbye Nora's mom and your filthy cigarettes.

Vampire hit squad guy sounded like that last time? I don't remember it been like that. I'll have to check the end of the lawyer episode.

I think Dutch had good intentions and didn't purposefully lead Thomas and co. to the hideout.

I was thinking that Palmer was hallucinating the master, but I guess it could be real.

And no, the vampire swat guy didn't sound like that the first time around. He sounded other worldly in this episode.

This was a decent episode. A few absurdities, but that's expected. I hope it doesn't end in a bad way.

Since there is only one episode left, that probably doesn't mean too much.

However, I actually watch almost everything at a higher speed because there's just too much to watch. I wouldn't have enough time otherwise.

Well Palmer ended up not getting screwed over. The Master likes to see his agents sweat. He did the same thing with Eichorst. I would be willing to bet whoever is in charge of Swatpires is just a turncoat with a grudge.

I can't believe the Sexless Goth showed up like that. It was so random at this point.

Getting the broadcast out is a major coup. It turns out the EBS also transmits across the internet lines as well as TV and radio so my concern about the broadcast not being recorded after being shut down immediately are mitigated.

Nora's motivation and subsequent flight from the city and capture will be interesting to see. The leverage Barnes uses against her is gone as well. Hell Palmer might survive the events of book one without even being turned or dying. Puts a lot into question on how everything will play out.

He did have an effect on his voice the first time he showed up as well. But this time he was yelling so maybe they overdid it to compensate for the volume.

Definitely a plus. She was destined to die anyway, good that it happens sooner rather than later. Kelly's transformation and Eichorst's involvement got bumped up in the timeline too, so this doesn't really bother me.
Not at all pleased to see the return of the haxx0r grrl though. Though that is in turned mitigated by the triumphant return of
Quinlan
.

Pretty good episode overall, and things are definitely going to come to a head during the season finale. Like I've been saying with all of Setrakian's flashbacks, I wish they were all compacted into a single episode instead of drawn out into smaller, momentum-breaking segments. Still, I appreciate the context they bring.

I was also surprised to see The Master help Palmer, even if it was only a token gesture.
In the books he's a lot more dismissive of his little pet.

This will get a lot of use.

The Albania stuff was pretty cool I thought. But it seems to me that the show skipped a huge deal from WW2 to the mid 60s, and we dont know how Abe became the Vampire hunter. Will we see how he got into this business, or the flashback stuff is done?

Also I think I know why Master looks like a goofball. Its the teeth.

Nah, it's the latex, stretched lips that don't move naturally and the lack of neck, and the obviously fake ears. The combination of all those things is what makes it goofy. The lack of neck particularly is a trait given to goofball characters. Add pointy, prominent ears to something (which are also used in characters to portray they are dumb, maybe due to the history of being related to inbreeding) and it is immediately less menacing (especially when they look so fake to begin with), and the lips just seal the deal.

The vampire SWAT guy has the same kind of teeth (a bit of the downward lips too, but a lot more subdued) and he looks badass, and a bit menacing.

i can't watch the vamp squad without thinking that one of them will pop their hood like the destiny live action trailer
