PlayStation Network Thread (Vita/PS3/PS4) | September 2014

I have asked several developers that have created and released couch-coop/competitive games on other playstation platforms if they are planning to port them to the vita and all of them have said that game x is supposed to be played with a friend locally.

Is it really that hard to make an online mode for something like tower fall or sportsfriends?

Edit: I am still missing a good online multiplayer bomberman clone for my vita :/

I want both but am definitely picking up Frozen Synapse. I played the original version on PC and loved it. It's basically a turn/phase based combat simulator. Each turn you move all your characters, controlling their exact path, their exact facing, etc. and can then test it till you have it exactly to your liking before committing. Tons of tactics, as you need to learn how to advance fire teams through doors, buildings, around corners, etc. with different weapons and against different enemies.

For the guy worried it's an MP game - it's single player on PC was great, I never played it MP. Though it sounds like they created a robust 'take your turn whenever' MP system, where you can have multiple games going and will get notified whenever it's your turn, like if you were playing chess online. Sounds great.

.

I really wanted the game. But that price tag, and no PS+ discount :(

I just spent a whole hour doing nothing but attempting to perfect level 50 in Velocity 2X. So much failure, but oh man that feeling when I finally did it. Can't get the smile off my face right now. I can now go to bed happy.

Finally getting that perfect you've been trying for in Velocity games is so satisfying, for me especially in the Critical Urgency levels in Ultra. It came pretty damn close to the feeling of pure bliss from beating a Dark Souls boss you have died on over and over.

Alright already! frozen synapse will be mine. I can respect the fact that they put a ton of time into bringing this over to my beloved vita. And it's a strategy game, a genre that is sorely lacking titles on the vita. They should have included the expansion, but whatever. The multiplayer is what's going to really let this thing shine (unless this is your first time playing, I really enjoyed the campaign during my original play through). Now, as for defense grid, what do you guys think?

Its not tho.

Yeah, which is why I said I already won that bet.

(If you don't remember, I'd change to any avatar for six months if there is indeed a new Dissidia that comes to Vita.)

Sometimes, I wonder what kind of games would pop up if people were able to just buy up Square-Enix's unused (or turned into a soulless mobile cashgrab) franchises.

Holy shit, I finally finished Golden Abyss. And by finished, I mean completed it once on Hard. Fuck getting the other trophies. That game just goes on and on and on...

Pretty impressive stuff really. I enjoyed most of it. It's just so...long! And the collectable stuff is really overly complicated and uninteresting.

I finally realize why people say HDN Rebirth is a tad grindy. God, some items just won't appear.

I don't guarantee anything about the quality, but look like your wish is coming.

Seems like Bombing Bastards is coming to Vita too(Add it to the list Fady man!)

Yes, it is.

It's been $20 on US PSN every 2 weeks yeah.
Be forwarned that it is 3ish GB.

I'm still rocking a low GB card here, the 8 that came with the bundle (better than the 4 with my OLED Vita before I sold it) but yeah.

So either get it now...or later...at 20, or try to wait out a mega holiday sale for what, 15? No way it goes to 10 any time soon, maybe the launch of 5 or something.

I think it was $15 once or twice before

any of these worth buying?

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
PANDEMONIUM!®

Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix (why is there no Vita version)
Street Fighter® III: Third Strike Online Edition
Super Street Fighter® II Turbo HD Remix
Street Fighter® Alpha 3 Max

Capcom Fighting Evolution
Capcom® vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium 2001

Probably too late? But the bolded are all awesome.

I'm a total cheerleader for Frozen Synapse, since I think it's such a wonderful, tactical game on PC. I had every plan to insta-buy, but $20 is... more than I thought it would be. I wish there was at least a small ps+ discount to encourage me to buy it this week.

I think I will buy it though, because these are exactly the kinds of games that need to see success on Vita to keep more games like it coming. Especially since they put so much work into Prime...

I do highly recommend the game to anyone who likes tactics/strategy. I think I'll buy it, it just hurts a bit after the flash sale expenditures, topping me off at $60 in a week which is more than my normal monthly budget.

This needs an answer. It looks a lot like my dear old Savage Moon, but on some sort of metal future tech base. I don't recall Savage Moon going for $25... so I'd want to know if this is good good or just eh good.

Defense Grid (the original) is one of the best tower defense games on the market. I imagine the sequel is even better. I enjoyed Savage Moon too, but DG was better imo. I can't justify spending $25 on it, especially with Frozen Synapse getting $20 and the flash sale getting $40... but if you like tower defense the game is almost certainly worth it based on lineage.

for some reason I got the random urge to play through Castlevania:SotN. I never got too far in the game, and my only experience with it was the XBLA version. Just bought and downloading now.

Is frozen synapse difficulty somewhat accessible?
It looks really cool but I'm afraid i might be overwhelmed

Very accessible. While it might look like lots is happening on youtube vids, really all you're doing is taking each soldier, and giving him waypoints that represent a few seconds of time. At each waypoint, you can control his exact facing. In this way you're basically controlling each character at a very low level, but it's super easy (probably even easier with touch on vita!).

So for example, move forward, turn slightly to the right, move to the door. have another guy slide into support position. Then next turn, breach the door.

After you set up a turn, you can test everything and, after you're happy with it, commit the move and everybody moves at once. If your guy sees an enemy he'll shoot at him -- so facing, etc, really matters. So does weapon type, range, etc. If you come around a corner looking the wrong way and walk into a baddie with a shotgun, you're toast.

You know how in movies you see stuff like SWAT teams take an area/building tactically? It's basically a (fun) sim of something like that, though you're not police and there is a plot). There are various mission types and such, but you'll be doing stuff like assaulting fortified positions with a small squad.

Not related to this actual quote, but I've played a ton of Ar Tonelico 1 (about 4 hours in now?) since yesterday and I know you said you don't know how well it holds up, but I think both the gameplay and the art style hold up incredibly well, I am thoroughly enjoying it. I actually think the battle system has enough depth to be fun even with today's standards, and man the sprites are really beautifully drawn and seem very timeless, especially with all the Pixel style indies out today. And my god, the sound in this game is fantastic. I left the main intro theme on while doing the dishes because I liked it so much. Definitely interested in continuing to noSurge after.

But back on topic, there are a ton of random sales that popped up today, any hidden gems that people recommend? Tried to wade through earlier but too much I don't recognize.

edit: sweet, thanks Hypno

Didn't want to end up with an 8GB card and a DL code for a game I don't want (and even if I did want, would buy physical), and have to unload them. Already have an old 8GB from launch that I should have sold a long time ago. Got a 64GB when they came out, and I think I'll keep the 32 since I paid full price for it and it could always come in handy as an alternate.

I do need a controller (and a TV -_- ), but I can just get that cheap... or buy a PS4 controller like I'd prefer spending that extra $40 on.

I can't figure out if the $99, basic Playstation TV comes with an HDMI cable or not.

Surprisingly, yes: http://www.playstation.com/en-us/explore/playstationtv/systems

But interestingly enough, it doesn't come with a USB cable. (I wonder if the USB cable included in the other version is for the Dualshock 3 or connecting the PS TV to a PC...)

Edit: Super ninja'd. Well, I guess the PS TV doesn't have a mini or micro USB port, so it can't be directly connected to a PC.

I don't remember if it was amazon or newegg, but something I bought years ago had a deal where if you bought a monitor you could add a HDMI cable for $0.01 to the order. Just for laughs I changed the quantity of the cables in my cart to 20 and somehow it worked, so I got 20 ten foot HDMI cables for 20 cents. Don't think I'll ever need one again hah.

I'm glad you like it. Back in the day it's really hard to sell this game to people since everyone looked down on 2D sprite and went nut over FFX. It saddened me that the first thing people criticized the game was its graphic. Being in the heavy size of fanservice sure doesn't help either. People just wouldn't believe I loved this game isn't just for its fanservice.

They released a lot of concert CD and OVA's OST. There is a compilation list on youtube. If you have time, I recommend listen to them, since they are wonderful. This is one of the games that isn't much popular but managed to get themselves a OVA release and several concerts. That says something about the game's music :p.

So I picked up frozen synapse. Damn, they did a great job with it. The touch screen controls are excellent, I don't even need to use joysticks. Zoom in and out, drag the screen, and selecting units is a breeze with touch.

I don't see and AI adjustment, so I think this is on middle of the road difficulty. I don't remember if you had difficulty sliders in campaign for pc. Very accessible to first timers, and really a great prep if you plan on taking your skills online.

The music still rocks, apropos for the setting and missions. I'm thinking they'll release the expansion in the future too, but you will definitely get value here even without it.

I'm probably still getting it eventually but I wish the visuals hadn't received such a downgrade. The original artstyle was so great.

I just picked it up myself (I played the PC version, but I always prefer my indies on Vita) and I am thoroughly enjoying it. As midasmulligan said, the touch controls are really well implemented, I am not the biggest touch fan but they are quite perfect in this case. But I totally agree with you about the graphics, I much prefer the old style. It is weird because the new graphics seem like they tried to be an upgrade, but it took away a lot of the charm the game had. Also, the contrast between bright blue walls and black background was easier to see than currently.

But these are minor points, if you enjoy strategy games definitely give this a shot if the price point doesn't turn you off. And add me as a PSN friend (v1perz53) for some asynchronous multiplayer!

It really is funny. Back in the day everyone looked down on sprite graphics and downplayed everything that wasn't 3D. But now, sprite graphics are so retro and awesome for a lot of indies! Funny how times have changed, really sad that this game got overlooked back in the day. Though it did come out super late in the PS2's life so I guess I understand a bit. And I will definitely be listening to that youtube compilation, probably while studying, it is excellent study music to me.

Once they revealed the new look and I saw they were going for the look of that other game by the Frozen Synapse guys (the futuristic football strategy game, whatever it was called), I had mixed feelings... I don't think I'd call it a downgrade though. It's definitely got more going on visually than the original ever had.

I'd have liked some kind of primary color hologram stuff going on with it. Something that overlayed onto the existing look to give it that same tactical blueprint feel, but it's not a vague abstraction like it used to be.

Eh, it's like Pixeljunk Shooter Ultimate, more technically impressive and more "next gen" (in the most predictable and insufferably lame way), but inferior in realizing the initial and superior art style.

Honestly, the original art style even facilitates gameplay much more. From the straight down perspective without extra fluff around it to the greater contrast between environment and players/enemies. The new art style isn't bad, but it is worse. Again, as always, minor nitpick on what is still a great game.

I don't think Frozen Synapse ever looked good or that Pixeljunk Shooter Ultimate looks bad (even though I prefer the originals too), so I don't think I agree with that comparison.

Sega please bring this to NA!!!

what...what am I seeing here

I agree that PJ Shooter in general looks better, but PJ Shooter Ultimate is definitely significantly worse than the original. And the main thing in both cases they're spitting on the original art style to look "cool" and 3D and such.

The other game's called Frozen Endzone, I think. Well, in my mind, it's definitely a downgrade. They could have polished up the original artstyle which gave the game much more of an identity. The new look is less interesting and a bit on the generic side.

But like I said, it's not a dealbreaker and I'll definitely be picking it up some time next month. Glad to read some positive impressions in here.

Honestly, the original art style even facilitates gameplay much more.

This too. Someone should do an OT for the game btw.
