New Board Gaming |OT2| On Tables, Off Topic

Open my copy of the Aliens deckbuilder, went "nope", and am just going to wait for the card protectors to arrive in the mail before I start sorting these.

Great play mat included, though. Looking forward to trying this one.

Always pick OG Balter. If you can't because you are playing new Balter pout and complain until you get your way. If you aren't a Cylon disconnect and act distracted, fiddle with your iPhone when it's not your turn. if you are a Cylon don't come out for nothing, sit on the Presidental cruiser drawing from the crisis deck. Every crisis card drawn exclaim "Oooooh" and then agonize over a decision for minutes, ultimately not playing the card and picking another crisis. Explain loudly that the cards will be useful later.

You mean the quorum cards right?

I love playing as Balter. My favourite character on the show and my favourite character in the game.

I'm in a different city for a wedding and scored a new copy of Runebound 2nd ed for $50 at a local shop. I did some looking online a few months ago for it and found it way too expensive.

Is that the one that use Legendary system? I saw that at local gaming store and it looks like a nice twist on Legendary game.

My FLGS got Dead of Winter in, so I ran over and snagged a copy. Really can't wait to play that! Also grabbed the Tzolk'in expansion while I was there, since my group is really enjoying the base game.

I've heard good things as well. Picked it up in the MM sale. I really like the Legendary system even though I feel like most don't.
The system is fine, it's the setup time that's the problem. It takes so much longer to setup and breakdown than most other deckbuilders. Lots of the cerberus stuff gets played amongst my group even though virtually everyone prefers Dominion; primarily because there's virtually no setup required for them.

General advice:

Play base game or base game + Daybreak only.

Play with five players. Two You Are A Cylon cards, eight You Are Not A Cylon cards (one more Not-Cylon for Baltar and Boomer).

Remember that the goal as the Humans is to have the resources survive Crisis Cards (and Cylon treachery) until reaching Kobol.

On your turn, you may move to one location on the board and then you may take one action (from your hand/special abilities/board location/etc.).

The default actions should revolve around scouting the Crisis Card and Destination decks (Launch Scout, Boomer's end-of-turn power, Roslin's Crisis Card power) and making sure the humans have enough skill cards to pass important skill checks (Press Room location); Investigative Committee should be played often to aid skill checks. Human players should be Executive Ordering each other pretty much all the time to increase the total number of actions taken. The only other actions that should be taken are very situational (FTL Control location on the last space of the jump track (-1 pop) and population is not important or FTL Control on -1/-3 when Cylon ships are an extreme threat; Repair when important/many locations/Vipers are damaged; Admiral's Quarters location when the majority of players are prepared to brig a Cylon; etc.).

Try to have at least one but no more than two pilots. The pilots have two special tasks:
1. Protect Civilian Ships from being hit by Raiders (stay with the Civilian Ships, play Evasive Maneuvers as necessary)
2. Prevent Heavy Raiders from boarding (Maximum Firepower when Heavy Raiders reach docking locations)

Most of the time neither of those needs are pressing. This does not mean the pilots should fly around blowing up shit just for the heck of it. Instead, the pilots should be playing Executive Order and/or Launch Scout. If Civilian Ships are placed in multiple locations, Human players should use the Communications location to consolidate them into a region defended by the pilot(s).

In short, make liberal use of Investigative Committee, Launch Scout and Executive Order.

As a Cylon, your goal is to deal maximum damage to the Human players. Staying hidden is not your goal. Ideally you want to be able to deal ongoing damage (causing multiple skill checks to fail, sowing dissent and distrust), massive damage (spiking important skill checks, moving Civilian Ships into the line of fire) and Reveal before being brigged, but you should take what you can get. Too often I've seen Cylons play pro-Human the entire game because they're afraid of being caught. That's how the Cylon team loses.

Excellent pointers.
Game went well, we stopped half way in because it was getting late but I think we have the basics covered now, so the next game should be significantly tighter and more fast paced. I played the Admiral and President) Cylon (all hail Marshall law) and did my best to sabotage skill checks and it was awesome to reveal myself. Stick someone else who we were half expecting to be a Cylon (only one in the game, so I knew better) in the brig and reveal next chance I got. x)

We did however have a few questions. Can ability cards (add two to die, ect.) be played in other players turns or only in my own?
Also if no one takes a political leader at the start of the game no one starts as president and the title has to be given through appropriate action right?

Played Tragedy Looper tonight.

Interesting stuff. My group figured out the roles pretty early on but still couldn't stop the tragedy. And that was WITH table talk on. The last couple "days" they just had their heads in their hands trying to figure out what the fuck was going on.

I had fun with it but I don't know how much this one is going to see the table. That scenario is rated 1/8 difficulty and they were about to buckle. They'd probably flip a table at some of the later scenarios.

Tis why I just set it up before people come over :P

though my wife and I have it down pretty well and can get legendary set up in around 5 min now so that's not so bad.

it seems like a game that as you get a better grasp of everything you will figure out better ways of dealing with stuff. If your group doesn't end up doing that though you could always just make your own easier scenarios trying to get the same difficulty down for them though.

1) Yes those cards can be played.

2) There is a complete line of succession for every character in the game. SOMEONE will be President. It's in the rulebook somewhere, near the back if I remember correctly.

The issue, with my group at least, is that we'll typically play deckbuilders multiple times using different card sets each time. With something like Dominion or Penny Arcade this is pretty easy. With Legendary it seems cumbersome.

Hey guys, my friends are having a board game night and I wanna buy settlers of Catan for it. I hear it's a good game but I have never played it so I don't know what edition or expansions to buy.

I also want to buy Munchkin but same problem there too. Any help would be appreciated guys.

For the start get the Settlers with Seafarers.
Seafarers doesn't add any fundamentally new game dynamics to learn but gives your much more options regarding the map.
If you plan to play with more then 4 players you will need to get the 5-6 player add-ons for both the base game and whatever expansions you want to get.
Even if you play with 4 people I would recommend getting the 5-6 player add-ons as you can build much larger maps.

I'm not too fond of Munchkins it's funny the first two times, then you know all the cards and the joke wares off and the gamplay is shallow imho.

So I would need to buy the seafarers AND the 5-6 player add on? I'm assuming add on DOESNT contain the core game

Also which places would be the best to buy this? Amazon is kinda confusing me with all the expansions, etc. (UK)

The Settlers base game plays with 3-4 people. Each expansion (such as Seafarers) then adds more rules and options to this base game.

You will also need a copy of the 5-6 player expansion for each of these, so in total, if you want to play a 6 player Seafarers game, you need:
Settlers Base Game
Settlers 5-6 player expansion
Seafarers expansion
Seafarers 5-6 player expansion.

That's a fair chunk of change, so I might recommend just getting Settlers (and maybe the 5-6 player expansion) first, then if everyone enjoys it, Seafarers will give you more variety and replayability.
The most helpful place will likely be a nearby specialist games store, like Travelling Man, but for best price I can't really advise very well. Book Depository seems to be ok, and places like Games Lore offer discounts on bulk purchases.

I would advise against the 5-6 player expansions for Catan. Adding more players adds more downtime and that's not a good thing. Even in a game of Catan where theoretically every die roll is important for everyone else.

That being said, Catan is still a lot of fun. Seafarers is a solid expansion, but you don't really need it for your first couple of plays.

I disagree. Catan being a very straight forward and simple game is perfect to serve as background entertainment while chatting and gossiping with friends for hours. Imho it's not a game where the downtime is a problem unless everyone is just concentrating on the game and not enjoying the company while playing it.

Looks like the Skull reprint is finally out. $16.99 at CSI, $8 cheaper than I paid from Amazon a week ago: http://www.coolstuffinc.com/p/197222
If anyone was in the market for it or waiting on a cheap copy...
I'd like to get it, but I want the older art:

See previous page. I wanted to hear what people think of it and if it is also worth being played with just 2 people.

Ah, missed your questions. It's a rock solid game, with a bunch of mechanics thrown together in interesting ways - deck building, area control, resource engine etc. I didn't enjoy it as much two player because the map's too big - there's not as much direct conflict over resources with just 2 players.

I have to agree with joey here. I do enjoy Catan, but usually the race to win is over halfway through, with two (in a four player game) or three to maybe four (in a six player game) duking it out until the end. If you are one of the players that has no chance to win there's pretty much nothing you can do about it. And if you play it with six players the wait is so much longer. *shrugs* maybe I need to play more with 6 players though.

I find it hard to play Catan and chat/gossip at the same time, as you constantly need to talk about trading resources.

2 Player is not the main thing was just curious. Ordered the game and I guess I might pick up the new map in Essen. Apparently it's even smaller than Italy so it will probably accommodate 2 well should I happen to just play with one other person.

I don't feel like the Black or Red boxes have better art, but I do like those as well. The old school flash art on those looks good, so at some point I will own those as well. I plan to have all of them in my collection.

I saw some people in here talking about Space Hulk.

My brother in laws birthday is coming up and he has expressed interest in miniatures. We play board games regularly and I recently started bringing over games like Battle Masters and Heroscape and they've been a good time. He was also into building model railways once upon a time.

He thinks Warhammer 40k is pretty neat and was looking into the Tyranid.

The starter pack for 40k is Dark Vengeance is Chaos Space Marines and the Dark Angels, but it comes with the rules and dice and all that fun stuff. Obviously this would be the best way to get started in 40k, but he wouldn't get the Tyranid.

Space Hulk is more expensive, but seems more self contained. It also includes the Tyranid. I was wondering if he wanted to get started, maybe to get him that, and if he does end up really liking it, could he add the Space Hulk figures into a Tyranid army?

ah, for my group legendary takes long enough that we only want to play it once...

and gah, dominion multiple times in a row sounds like one of my worst board game nightmares @_@

Keep in mind that it's a boardgame through and through. Meaning the rules might not be as fiddly (good or bad) and the combat is distilled. From my understanding, I don't do wargaming so someone please correct me.

Here is a Watched It Played playlist for Space Hulk. It does a great job of giving you a since of the gameplay. Check it out!

Space Hulk is the perfect gateway into 40k proper. It is entirely self contained, but the miniatures themselves can also be used in 40k (the space marine terminators and genestealers). As was mentioned, it is a board game through and through and therefore plays quite differently than 40k itself. Dark Vengence is the starter box for 40k and is also great for different reasons.

Space Hulk is a great intro to both the lore and the minatures that make the Warhammer 40k universe so appealing. He can do some light modeling and painting if he wants to test those waters as well.

Gah Warhammer 40k talk. I enjoyed that game a lot back int he day. I sometimes wonder if Games Workshop will ever do a skirmish game again. Necromunda was really neat.

They should let FFG make skirmish board games based on Warhammer 40k. I bet they would do really well.

Doesn't have a physical book, but there is a digital supplement you can buy called Killteam. It's essentially a reworking of the old killteam rules, which is basically squad vs squad skirmish 40k.

Seriously the one thing I will never understand about Kickstarter is why you always have to go back and basically restate what you got. The fact that there are all these third-party services to support add-ons and the like is ridiculous.

Introduced the lunchtime crew at work to Riff Raff. Big hit, lots of laughs, and of course as game developers, they figured out how to min-max & end up with the ship physically stuck at full tilt... Good times.

The logistical nightmare at pick and pack is not worth the extreme add-ons some people have done on KS.

Believe me, I have a hard enough time getting good addresses for backers.

Oh I also received Machi Koro today which is a really fun small game. Very dice dependent but what building to build is still an interesting choice that depends on couple of factory like what combo you can get and what other people have. Really hope Kosmos will bring out the expansions here.

Got Patchisfory today. The hardest waits are when you've been studying the rules for the whole week the game is in transit. Can't wait to play it!

Yep. What sucks though is when you wait for a week for a game and learn all the rules, study the manual and FAQs, read through the BGG threads, it arrives... and it gets shelved because no one wants to play it or there is no time to play it. Happened to me with Eclipse. And by the time I was ready to finally play it, I had pushed everything I learned to the side and filled that space with the rules for other games.

I tell you what... I normally don't watch Let's Plays or video reviews or anything, for board games or video games. They just haven't interested me. I don't know who any of these prominent video reviewers or streamers are. I will see names mentioned for people and I will recognize their reputation, but that is about it. I think I have maybe only watched two informational board game videos so far, one for Arkham Horror and one for Quarriors (I tried to watch a MDM video once but couldn't load it).

All of that said, I just sought out a video for Space Hulk: Death Angel. I opened the rule book an hour ago and was kind If tired, so I figured that I would watch an explanation and them read it tomorrow. I saw one by Rahdo and recognizing the name from BGG and here, selected it. Almost 50 minutes later and I have to say: That was very informative. Just an excellent video which I think will prove to be very helpful. It seems like a lot of people in the comments on YT are very thankful and saying that the rule book is very poorly written and confusing.

I think next time I have some problems with a game's rules, I'll see if he has put out a video for it. That was excellent.

I don't even like most games Rahdo puts out videos for, but I still like watching him talk about games. Watching him talk about games currently in Kickstarter is always a threat to your wallet. I didn't even know this before I started watching his videos, but he used to be a name in videogame industry, working with Peter Molyneux, Will Wright among others.

At one point on BGG I saw some posts from him, might have been a pre-GenCon GeekAuction, and I clicked on his name to view his profile. I saw where he mentioned his time in the game industry then and was surprised.

Received Concordia today and just finished playing my first game. This game is really good. Definitely going to pick up the new map in Essen. having a map that is more cramped than the Italy one sounds great. Germania is going to be a nice bonus for big games.

I watch every video of boardgame play, I think it's easiest way to learn rule and see how the game mechanic work. I used to think it was silly that my kids love watching YouTubes and Twitch of people playing video games now they are making fun of me watching people play boardgames.

Watch it Played! and Crits Happens are the two I watch the most, I also watch Rahdo. I also enjoy watching X-Wings Miniatures being play by Trials. (May be it's the British English that make it fun to watch).

I found a new (to me) board game store in Kalamazoo, MI with around a 20-25% discount on all games. They have huge variety and quanity. I picked up Smash Up Big Box as well as the Monster expansion. I threw in Talisman: Woodland expansion as well. Now I have all 4 corners (and every other expansion to boot). I can't wait to play a mega game. I may just set it up for some pics later.
