Former WipeOut devs announce new futuristic racer....Formula Fusion

I love wipeout as much as anyone. I was just playing 2048 yesterday. But if Wipeout was really selling well, why would Sony disband Studio Liverpool? On the other hand, F-Zero has a lot of Nintendo fans who would buy it, who don't touch non nintendo stuff. I think a new F-Zero would do well.

Maybe because Studio Liverpool was a large(ish) studio working in a sub-genre that had become niche (and this includes F-Zero too).

Sony didn't want to keep around a studio with permanent staff to make a niche game. Nintendo outsourced F-Zero GX to Sega, and now apparently can't even be bothered to do that anymore... there's really not anything to suggest that a new F-Zero would perform better than a new WipEout, especially taking into account where the PS4 and WiiU currently stand.

They show a glimpse of some corners:

Hopefully it's slow so people can see what's going on.

You can't really blame them for making it a bit more arcade, if they do. Hopefully they still have the crazy fast out of control in a split second feeling at higher levels. It looks like it could still be a lot of fun, but that boost giving the extreme speed in a straight line with a massive blur seemed a bit worrying too.

People just need to reach their inner Super Zen

I am a big Wipeout fan and futuristic racers (with weapons) are the best.

Not so sure on this on yet though, don't like the cars. If they wanted to go for a look less looking like the generic Wipeout clone (the tracks do though), they should have just copied Rollcage.

Sony already ports Tearaway, so they should just up-port Wipeout 2048 to PS4 too. I know I will be the first one to cry but the public opinion of the Vita's library is gone anyway.

You know I thought I wanted this, but now that I see it. Not so much. It's just janky looking compared to the perfection of Wipeout.

There is a God...

Wow - colour me interested.

Not gonna hype myself up at this point but it is certainly my curiosity has been aroused.

I never got why they felt the need to add weapons and bumper car physics in these games. It turns them into overly serious Kart games with a frowny face instead of awesome future bleeding edge super fast racing.

Ok, now that's official.

Ex Wipeout Devs team up with The Designers Republic™ to create a new AG Racer -‘Formula Fusion’.

Middlesborough, UK –Oct. 03, 2014 – R8 Games Ltd and The Designers Republic™ announced today that they will be joining forces to develop a new spiritual successor to Wipeout; Formula Fusion. Combining decades of development and design expertise, Formula Fusion will represent the next big leap forward for the genre onto next gen consoles.

Previously known for Wipeout’s award winning graphic design direction and a wide range of iconic brands; The Designers Republic™ will work side by side with the developers to promote and establish the visual style design aspects for the game.
Formula Fusion is currently in pre-production and promises many enhancements over the original version of Wipeout, including; craft and technology customisation, track editing tools, synchronous multiplayer with online leagues and a new hyper-speed mode.
The game will be initially developed for the PC Steam gaming community with console versions to follow soon afterwards.
"We are bowled over by the amount of interest we have had so far! Adding TDR™ to the mix marks our intention to give fans what they want," said a spokesperson for R8 Games. "We are attempting to break new ground and reinvigorate the AG Racing Genre with a cutting edge Adrenaline fuelled Racing Experience!”
"I always said we'd never do another Wipeout. After Wip3out, the third instalment, with the original team dispersing if not already long gone, The Idea was degenerating into a marketing led franchise — from our perspective — an ever decreasing circle of senseless reiteration cranked out for cash. The difference for us with Formula Fusion is the return to values behind the game — the desire to make it, and the community aspect — the desire to not only play it, but to contribute to creating it. The community, and the opportunity to engage with it, are the drivers behind TDR™’s re-engagement with The Idea. 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1 – GO!" said Ian Anderson, Founder TDR™

Subject to platform submission – an early access version of Formula Fusion will be made available through the Steam Store in June 2015, with the full version expected in Q2 2016.

Fucking. Stoked.

They just announced that these former Wipeout devs will also team up with Cold Storage (popular Psygnosis musician, big part of the Wipeout soul) in addition to The Designers Republic in their Facebook site:

STOP PRESS: Tim Wright AKA 'CoLD SToRAGE' has agreed to collaborate with DUB FX on the sound track for Formula Fusion! Electronic big beats with a cool urban vibe! This promises to be something 'really' special and outlines our intentions to give it our own treatment. Details to follow.

Not sure if enough for a new thread, but for me it's the megaton of the year. At least I'd ask the mods to modify the current thread title to something like :

I hope this game turns out to be great (not liking what I see so far tbh)... because at the moment, I just find myself feeling bitter that this couldn't have all come together for a real Wipeout game post Wip3out (and even that didn't have CoLD SToRAGE).

I'm really hoping that all the key elements (design, control, music, etc.) come together in the end since if they don't this will be the biggest letdown of all time - at least for me that is. Excited to have TDR and Cold Storage onboard so here's hoping the game ends up being solid.

Obviously it's very early and they're probably having to start from scratch on everything as I doubt Sony let then walk out of the door with the source code, but I'm incredibly excited.

I love Cold Storage, and the idea of another Wipeout style game, but the design of these ships don't sit right with me for some reason.

The artstyle isn't anything on the level of the Wipeout games but the gameplay looks pretty tight. I'm assuming this will be a <£20 game so I'll probably buy it Day 1.

Zombie mode confirmed?

It seems video was done before tDR got involved?

I'm confident tDR's design will make the game look like a believable world rather than the mosh-mash of styles that's in the video.

I'm down for a good futuristic racer, will be keeping an eye out on this for sure.

Last Wipeout I played was on the PSX.

Fzero on the GC is still my favorite in the genre but damn that story mode!

The ship designs look absolutely terrible. I understand that they want to keep the F1 spirit alive and present, but simply deleting the wheels and adding some fire shooting out of the back makes the ships look awkward and dumb.

Music: trailer music is all right, but not really in the Wipeout spirit-- rarely has a Wipeout song ever had forefront vocals longer than samples. Cold Storage on the project gives me confidence, though.

Soft (menus, packaging, etc) design: The Designers Republic? That's great. They'll do a good job, and they only seem to work with people they like.

Hard (3D modelling) design: It looks barely passable to me. Not offensive, but it doesn't really capture the Wipeout Feel. Wipeout is typically designed by blocking out the landmarks, placing them close to the track, then fleshing them out later. Designing like this provides a sense of speed since every part of the track is associated with different landmarks (long-term sense of travel), and their proximity makes them whizz by in your field of vision (short-term sense of speed). And the ships look kind of bland, square, and strangely long.

Racing: What the hell is up with those straightaways? Wipeout is famous for bends, dips, and turns-- one of the only long straightaways I remember is a loop-de-loop which interestingly cuts off your vision.

All in all, I get a feeling from the design of the tracks and the craft the devs think this is an F1 game. I worry that they'll try to kill the slingshotty feeling of the Wipeout games.

Ian Anderson from tDR talks about Formula Fusion. Apparently, there's going to be a kickstarter for this project.

That lamp.

I think I'm imagining what he's describing. I agree that the wipeout became sort of aesthetically bland after a point. I'd love if they did a future with less focus on technology and the resulting aesthetic and more focus on the aesthetic of a devolving society. So include elements of poverty or over-population and stuff like that.

Holy crap, I didn't realise this had Cold Storage on board.

This might be the first early access game I ever try out... I know people keep saying this looks too much like WipEout (I agree), but that's no bad thing for me. I've never got tired of playing WipEout, and it's been a year and a half (will be 2 years by June) since 2048 and I'm itching for me.

So more WipEout... with Cold Storage... and Designers Republic... yes please!

Actually, I think that's the opposite of what the majority of complaints have been.

Might be in the minority here, but I've always dreamed of a GT-fied Wipeout.

When i say GTfied in mean in structure. Lots of tracks and different ships with deeper differences in handling, upgrades, customization, different classes, championships, different challenges and game modes,

Well, this doesn't look like it will have any of this (scrap that, looks like it has upgrades my bad), but it's shaping up to be a 100% authentic Wipeout experience, with TDR and Cold Storage onboard, which makes me happy.

I'm not dismissing this yet but there's something about it that just doesn't seem right to me. The fact that it's ex Wipeout people making a futuristic racer and now they're boasting about Cold Fusion and DR doesn't exactly fill me with hope.

Even with ex Wipeout people, DR and Cold Fusion there just seems to be something missing for me.

Can't help but feel that we're going to end up with the gaming version of a bad tribute band, they sort of look and sound like the original but you just know that they all work in McDonalds on the weekends to make ends meet.
