Crysis 2 was the best looking game when it came out too and Crysis 3 after that. Ryse isn't exactly a slouch either.

You frame it as if he is spouting something about diminishing returns, when he comments about the subjective "wow factor" and how it specifically applies to this console gen (Crysis 1 for example wowd so much because it pretty much invented/combined graphical techniques that were about 5 years off into the future: of course relying on the the hardware).
To put it simply, this gen's grahpical power is not simply enough to wow on metrics alone. You have to think differently about graphics. Hence why they moved the engine to PBS.
Coming in afterwards with a comment about gameplay speaks nothing to what Schultz is originally even talking about.

First of all this is Gamespot's "frame" of the interview and title not mine.
Secondly i still don't see what's so wrong with the "framing" in the OP based on the context of the interview comment and article.

Yes he's a graphics programmer who works at Crytek.No one tried to misslead you that he was something else.It's clearly mentioned in the OP.Does that mean that just because he is a graphics programmer his comment doesn't hold any value?

Who cares about the console? I'm not saying this as some master race elitist either since I play on consoles too, but I was talking about Crytek doing to AI what they did to graphics in 2007. That was strictly PC based until Crysis 2, and even then the console versions still don't come close to what was seen on the PC version of Crysis. If they manage to do what I was suggesting, they can do with that what they did with Crysis 2 on the consoles.
Nowhere is gameplay mentioned, nor is it even slightly related to the discussion.

Remember PS4 almost had 4gigs, I don't think 128GB will be commonplace in 2019 when PS5 will likely release. Most gaming pc's have currently 4-8GB of ram according to steam hw survey. I expect 64GB ram.

With how much people bicker about graphics lately and seem to rubbish any game that isn't absolutely mind-blowing looking, I might argue that Crytek actually seem to have their priorities in order.
I understand your point, but we do need companies like Crytek pushing the boundaries still. Progress just isn't gonna get made if everybody just 'settles'.
Who is actually making games in CryEngine nowadays though? Very few who actually have the budget to make a AAA game it seems. Otherwise, Crytek wouldn't be struggling so mightily. I know off the top of my head the new Fable, Sniper, that XBLA Zombie game, and that F2P shooter. Anything else?

There sure are a lot of know it all babies on this thread. The gaming industry is a big place where different development studios have different areas of expertise and focus. Very few studios have the resources nor ability to create their own 3D engines so its only natural for a few studios to focus on creating those engines and then creating graphical showpieces for those engines. Whether you enjoy their games or not they have talented people making creating really impressive technology. Show a little respect.
Looks like Crytek is paying their employees again.

Crytek is very close to shuttering entirely if they don't release a hit game in the next 18 months though. It's not concern trolling to state that the last thing they should be worried about is pushing top end cards to their limit right now.

Heh. Alien Isolation doesn't even 1080/60 on PS4. A 260x can out perform them. ($100 GPU)
They look good but the games that have been released or are just around the corner have not been that big leap forward. Many multi-platform games are just as good looking, some even better.

To talk about gameplay, when he is talking about rendering tech, seems just off topic in an interview completely about rendering... with a rendering guy. Most people frown upon saying something like "oh yeah, what about the gameplay?" in a digital foundry tech comparison thread for the same reason.
Crytek's engine business is not struggling. Frankfurt studio or engine division was never in danger, its very profitable.
Just this year, engine was used in 3 high budget movie productions with their Cinema client.
Bigger CE based games in production are Evolve, Star Citizen, Kingdoms Deliverance, Arkane game, Homefront and few MMOs, like ArchAge or Monster Hunter Online.

You know what eliminating bottlenecks in benchmarks mean, right?
In benchmarks there are always two tests:
CPU test with high end cards in lower resolutions on highest settings
GPU tests with high end oc'ed CPUs on highest settings in high resolutions.
Why? Because its the most logical way to test performance of those components without introducing artificial bottlenecks.

Story i agree but their "gameplay" is usually pretty solid. Haven't played ryse though. I heard that in that game it's other way around and the story is actually pretty good?

He's totally right, I remember being wowed by stuff like Empire: Total War and uncharted 2, and even though there is absolutely insane looking stuff out now like the Order and Driveclub, I wouldn't say I'm wowed by them. I don't think it helps that I game a lot on a high-end PC.
That said, the Uncharted 4 teaser is the first game to have ever tricked me about whether or not it was CGI.

Crytek is transitioning into a f2p studio. Bid budget AAA title releases is over them unless someone like MS shows up and want a game for their platform.

i actually think a GPU crushing monster is probably their best bet for some kind of marketplace resonance. doesn't need to be big on content or a full price game or anything, just turn every engine setting up to fuck you and market as PC dick measuring pole.
OG crysis is still their biggest hit of the last decade.
