Okay, Japanimation, whatever.

Anime only refers to Japanese cartoons.

Manga only refers to Japanese comics.

Vocaloid is a couple of computer programs that create 3D models that sing and dance over computer-generated voices. Hatsune Miku is a vocaloid that's been in some video games.

What do you call Japanese animation that heavily/entirely uses CGI?

It's still Anime.

Hatsune Miku is the output of specific computer programs.

For example, a program called MikuMikuDance is commonly used to create the dancing 3D models, while the Vocaloid engine for Hatsune Miku (see above) creates the music.

I find this weird even though I probably shouldn't as Gorillaz have been pretty prolific in the west and HoloPac was pretty sweet while he lasted. Maybe I just fear Miku taking over.

Well...if you want to get technical, 3D Vocaloid videos are "Anime" if you make them in Japan...because "technically" they are Japanese cartoons.

BUT, the term "Vocaloid" and the term "Anime" have very specific connotations.

If you say you're a fan of "Anime," you are not talking about vocaloids. You're talking about big productions that air on typical TV channels (or movie theaters) in Japan as long-form series (or in the OVA / Movie format) and get released on DVD and tend to contain specific tropes.

I'm going to buy some Nippon Dominos Pizza to eat while watching this momentous achievement.

Not really. She's a character that basically personifies one of the voices of a vocal synthesizer, which is called Vocaloid. The software is popular as fuuuuuck, which means that her image is used by a lot of music people who use the software. Anime is an animated visual medium, and i don't think she has ever been in one, but i may be wrong.

I'm guessing she'll be singing songs created by the company that develops Vocaloid? I don't know how that shit works.

Now i can't stop listening to matryoshka, danke gaf.

You want to win the west, Miku, you need to go about it gradually.

Have a smart but interesting guy or gal that knows about the whole Vocaloid thing explain exactly what it is. Show clips of the concert, show how it allows creators to create music without needing to have a good voice, show how it's not weird as hell. Show how the community is tight knit and passionate.

Don't have an "interview" with a screen or a holograph. Don't just have a song performed. Ease into it.

But they won't. I'm guessing it's going to be an "interview" with Miku and it's going to be awkward as fuck.

Alternatively they could just do a live performance of this and everyone at Letterman tonight will leave with the most confused expressions ever seen as a result of a live television performance.

I mean, Letterman did Girl's Generation a couple years ago, right? Seems like a good venue for more unusual/non-American-mainstream performers.
