PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

I started replaying Burnout 3 Takedown tonight for the first time in probably nine years. If I remember right, I cleared the entire game except for one takedown or signature moment or tiny something I never was able to get (I've long ago lost my old save). I still feel like it's close to a perfect game. The sense of speed, even when you're just starting out is incredible & the game still seems so fun. The funny thing is, I never played the first two games. maybe I'll finally pick those up next?

In this article, I want to try and get a handle on some of the aspects of the PS2 that make it so fundamentally different from the current crop of PCs, and in the process shed some light on the difficulties developers will face in going from the PC to the PS2. Specifically, I'll look at the overall designs of the PS2 and PC, and explain how the demands of dynamic media processing have caused the design of the PS2 architecture to differ from the PC's to the point where developers will have to rethink how they move code and data around to render a 3D environment.

How is the US version of Beatmania? I can get the game with the controller for a good price but I want to know if our version is a decent entry point to the series, or best to skip it and try to track down the many japanese versions? Never played any Beatmania games, by the way.

Hey guys
I have a BC PS3 as my main PS2 playing-console. Is there anyway to play import PS2 games on it? Thanks.

In 2014 you have still fat PS3? It's almost impossile or you are extremely lucky or you play on PS3 1h per week. :) My fat died last year and I had to buy PS3 SS.

I am not 110% sure, but you can't play on PS3 in import games from PS1/PS2 era. PS3 games yes, but older titles from previous generation, unfortunately not.

Haha, I take it down to my local repair show every 1.5 years and get it cleaned out and the thermal paste re-applied. I can't lose my RGB over HDMI PS2 games and wireless controlling. Shame to hear that there's no real way to region mod the thing. Oh well.

Is there anyway to backup PS2 save files without modding my PS2 or anything like that? I'm correct in thinking you can't save to a HDD without modding or whatever you do, right?

My PS2 takes a while to read my memory card nowadays, and I'd like to have a digital back up of my saves that I can put to and from something (my Mac or a USB drive or what have you) to my PS2 memory card, if that's at all possible.

I believe some versions of Gameshark and Action Replay allow transferring saves to USB drive.

Oh, hey,

There is a PS2 thread. I've been wondering for a while but didn't check.

Soo... I ripped my fat stack of PS2 RPGs to my hard drive and jammed it in my PS2, but never got around to playing any of them when I originally bought them. Any suggestions for which to do first? (This is an open ended question, I know, so I guess I'll limit it to turn based)

Probably better to post a list of games too!

Ahhh, yes, I will. I even happen to own FFX International. I downloaded the translation patch-- as far as I understand it, International greatly improves FFX. I'll try to post a quick list after work.

Awesome to see a PS2 thread is around. That had me wondering.

three was a transfer tool back when ps3 had backwards compatibility. it was ps2 memory card to usb... wonder if that would work?

The other day I found my slim PS2 (that I had long since thought my parents gave away) under some junk in a closet. I celebrated by playing 3 straight hours of RE4. Feels good man.

I have a metric fuckton of PS2 games, pretty much every NA release that I want I have....except for a Fighter Maker game. Are they any fun? I remember reviews were tepid to poor from what I saw but the concept sounds so fun even with a bunch of jank.

With all these musou games getting announced...I just want to sample the series with a cheap entry.

Which one on the PS2 will serve me the best? Should I bother with the PS2's best or am I best paying the extra for one of the many PS4/PC entries out this year?

EDIT: For future reference: I bought Dynasty Warriors 5 and it's pretty good. My only complaint compared to modern entries is that the right stick doesn't control the camera.

I'm not much of a PS2 collector, but wanted to see if anyone had any familiarity with the Everquest Online Adventures beta discs?

I got betas 2 and 3 in the mail back in '02-'03 sometime. I've never seen them anywhere else and there are no hits on them on eBay or anything.

I remember playing them very briefly back in the day and just never clicked with me. From what I remember, this game was of the "online only" variety and as such these discs would be pretty useless other than as collectors items.

So yesterday the last Video Rental store in my neighborhood put up "EVERYTHING MUST GO" signs.

I got Suikoden 4 and Growlancer Generations for $3 each. Both are mint... I'm not sure anyone ever even rented Growlancer. Box, manuals, both discs etc.

So now I have a problem. I don't own a PS2 anymore, since my launch PS3 kicked the bucket and I replaced it with a slim. What model PS2 do folks suggest? I don't intend to do much modding, unless that's the absolute best way to go.

If you have no intent to mod, get the nicest condition SCPH-90001 you can find. It should last you a long time without any issues.

I use the same thing. I even tried my boot up disk to play Japanese games. Didn't expect it to work so no worries.

If you must play PS2/PS1 imports on your PS3 than you can download them from the Japanese PSN.

I'm probably going on long outdated info but the old big model with the hard drive bay is the most mod-friendly

Probably better to just get a long-lasting model for me. The PS2's home to the first commercial game that I worked on, so I want to have that on hand for as long as possible.

My fat PS2's ran flawlessly since 2003 and shows no signs of stopping. I acknowledge it might be an anomaly, but the PS2 was a hell of a lot sturdier and dependable than today's consoles. I recommend getting one with a HDD tray too.

Yep. If you want to mod, get a PS2 50000. If you don't, get a 90000.

I've beat my PS2 Slim 90000 to hell and back, thousands of gaming hours and it never even coughs. It's a crazy efficient and sturdy console.

If anyone's interested in setting up Free Mcboot and softmodding their system but a little hesitant about the time/effort involved in getting a memory card set up, let me know. I came across a few spare memory cards and I'd be happy install FMCB and get some out to people on here for cost of the card+shipping.

Just PM me if you're interested.

Is there anywhere that sells new game cases or reproduction cases with the memory card slots? I want to spruce up my cases, but I want them to either be official cases or where you can't really tell the difference.

Just don't know if that's possible. Would be nice to be able to replace the old ones.

There should be some on Amazon from the same company who make the official ones, but they don't have the memory card slots. They're made by Amaray, and are quite expensive in my opinion.

Probably cheaper to buy some good quality second-hand games and use their cases.

probably best of going into charity shops and buying the cheap overstocked yearly sports games and chucking the disc/inserts or look for someone on ebay selling joblot of the same game

if you're in the uk these are pretty cheap, could always send the seller a message to make sure all of them contain memory card slots, iirc the cases 2008 or 2009 onwards didn't http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/25x-Offic...ideo_Games_Video_Games_JS&hash=item1c461119c5

Finally got a copy of Champions of Norrath. It's pretty fun, but it only loads properly in my fat PS2. The slim PS2 gets stuck loading at some point. Disappointing, but it's probably just this copy.

I always wanted to try that game and it's sequel. Yeah certain copies can do that, happened to me a few months with one game as one didn't work on my slim so I got another copy and it works perfectly.

It's a DVD9 game... your slim PS2's laser is getting old and having trouble reading it. You can adjust the potentiometer in the laser assembly and it'll probably read just fine.

Man, i should have never traded in my copy of Dragon Quest VIII, as im looking to play it, (and im not interested in the ios version that much, plus its not supported on my 4S)

Ive said it over and over again but one of my favourite gaming memories is my friend and I playing DQ8 over the course of several months. Whenever we had a free evening I would go to his house and we would play and trade off controlling or checking stuff on faqs etc.

That was such an amazing time and such a great game.

EDIT - Our monster teams were beasts! I loved sending them into battle or battling with them in the monster arena.

Before I post elsewhere, anyone want to trade Sakura Wars: So Long My Love for either Grandia Xtreme, Devil Summoner 1, or Persona 3 FES?

My Sakura Wars is in good shape, no manual, but its still got the original cover art, although its in a replacement double disc DVD case.

PS2 if i remember correctly the pc ports were kinda bad
Asking because I read in another thread that the original team worked on the PC release and added extra features.

The game wasn't optimized well, but that is 10+ years ago, so I don't know if it will pose a problem or not. Unless you heard that there are control issues? That is a different case altogether.
