PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

I picked up a copy of Summoner 2 when gamestop was clearancing out thier ps2 stuff... anyone tried it? I had the original when it was new, it was only ok (first couple of months for ps2 were pretty barren so I played it a bunch). The sequel seems to be rated higher. Any thoughts?

I liked it. It's very unconventional kind of fantasy setting. The game itself I don't remember that well, but I think it was better than the first one, which I'm re-playing right now on PC.

13 years later I finally own this game...and I wish I had gotten it sooner!!!

Heh, I got my copy of Klonoa 2 yesterday, all I need is to rip it and give it a try! :D

Got two big lots though, I'm not done. =_=

Well, here it is, around 50 PS2 exclusives I picked up this summer. Taking screenshots, while fun, was also the toughest to do because of the insane interlacing that many games have due to no 480p support. Whenever a game supports 480p I set it to that res to avoid interlacing and have it at the max res it can do as well. These screens were taken from my Avermedia with a PS3 component cable. Even though I own Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution I don't count it as a pure exclusive due to it being on the PS3's PSN EU store. Anyways, here it is in alphabetical order.

Castle of Druaga any good?

EDIT: You mean Nightmare of Druaga, right?

My bro played this game hardcore a few years back. I own it too, but have barely played it. From what I've gathered/been told, it's actually a very competent dungeon crawler/ with some rogue-lite elements. If you're a fan of the genre I believe it's worth playing/checking out. There is some minor underlying bullshit though (at least from our perspective). The game has an assortment of sidequest/optional floors/dungeons or some shit like that which scale to your character level. After probably playing the game for nearly 100-some hours my bro decided to check this portion of the game out only to discover that nearly all of them were impossible due to the level scaling. For him, it soured his entire experience of the game. I personally cannot stand level scaling in RPGs (as does my brother), so your millage may vary.

Awesome post!

Kinda random, but is it safe to place another console on top of the original PS2 if its sitting flat? On my current set up, unless I shuffle some stuff around, I might have to lay my PS2 flat, and sit a Genesis1+CD2 set up on top...but I dont think i've ever sat anything substantial on top of a console before.

One thing I hate about Klonoa 2 is the fact that loading screens run at a different resolution from everything else in the game. It always looked weird on a CRT but, now that I'm using an XRGB, loading always results in the scaler needing to change resolutions which takes time (a few seconds). Not cool.

I had my Gamecube on my PS2 for over years with no worries.

Just dont put your OG PS3 on it... :)

Okay... I need some help. I've been trying to build my collection up this last year and try out series that I haven't before. I'm close to having most of the games I'm looking for, but I need some help figuring out what I should pick up next. So... What should I prioritize out of these games?

.hack//infestation (the first one)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (big Buffy fan)
Gungrave
Shadow Hearts
Snoopy vs the Red Baron
Suikoden 3
Suikoden 4 (I haven't played any of the suikoden games yet though!)

Any help??

You should never play Suikoden 4. (3 is okay) I think you should play Shadow Hearts - or Koudelka if you are interested in what came before it. Or Buffy but I have never played that.

Bought a fat stack of PS2 games a few months back when GameStop had em for dirt cheap. Finally decided to start digging though the stack and playing a few of them.

I played Burnout: Revenge and Onimusha 3.

I'd only ever played Burnout here and there at a friend's place, but man tha game is fucking rad, the races especially.

Onimusha also seemed really cool, almost like an actiony Resident Evil. The controls seems maybe a bit simple, with just one real method of attack by pressing square a bunch, and occasionally hitting triangle. But still I think I'll keep at that one, I'm really enjoying the "man out of time" premise so far.

Definitely Suikoden 5 followed closely by Shadow Hearts.

Koudelka? I'll look into it! Thanks!

Yeah but that is a PS1 game. I would also recommend Suikoden I/II (also for PS1) since they are the best in the series. 3/5 are fine though and there is also Suikoden Tactics for PS2 which may be worth checking out. I havent played that one yet though.

Just started playing Chulip last night and I totally thought I'd have nightmares about this dude.

I was interested in the game because of the team's connections to Love-de-Lic (of Moon: Remix RPG Adventure fame), but it's really a standout game and totally unique. From the artstyle, music, gameplay, and even the little flourishes that show themselves in character interactions, animations, and world building, the entire game just exudes playfulness and maintains a really lighthearted but creepy tone. It's really unnerving because the game manages to keep a delicate balance between normality and surreality--it'll occasionally venture on either extreme for a few moments before capturing its balance again, leaving you with those "wait, what just happened..." moments while playing.

What's even more interesting is its localization process. The title screen was a little weird for me at first because of the copyright dates--it turns out that there was a five year delay between its Japanese release and its release in the US. I also had no clue that it was released as a Gamestop exclusive.

Was always curious about this one, not because of the hokey premise but because of the setting. It takes place in Japan shortly after WWII ala Grave of the Fireflies, right?

I'm only about 2 or 3 hours into it so far and it never explicitly says anything about the setting, but the costumes, architecture and technology of the game is really reminiscent of that time period. The overall tone of the game reminds me so much of Attack of the Friday Monsters on the 3DS with a somewhat-morbid twist. It plays so much on a cultural nostalgia for being young in 50s-60s Japan but it does a great job of really manipulating that to produce a really charming, but inherently dark, game.

I was really surprised at how concerned the game is with class. Half of the characters in the game that you have to kiss are "underground residents" which mainly consist of really weird humans, mythological creatures, and other social outcasts. All of the community members constantly talk about how poor the main character and his dad are, too.

Got a couple of very nice packages delivered this past week.

Most of the games weren't cheap either. Around €50 a piece, but everything is mint/new.

Also picked up a brand new spare PS2 slim that someone at work bought for his son several years ago, and never ended up using or even opening it. :)

Well, I obviously think so. ^_^ I am, admittedly, a big LoK fan. But yeah I do think they're must-haves for the PS1 and PS2, far more than most games usually listed.
